In today's Bitwig Studio 4.3 music production tutorial we look at using various alternative sequencer techniques that don't use the arpeggiator to create some cool rhythmic and broken chords. All of the tricks I show you Bitwig Native devices so you don't need any other plugin to make this work.
The first device we look at is the Note Repeats - a MIDI FX we can use to create Euclidean rhythms. By adding multiple instances of the device in a round robin set Note FX selector, we can create stuttered chord patterns.
The second technique uses the Ricochet Note FX, fed into a Quantizer device set to adjust to 1/16th notes. Adjusting the dimensions and rotation of the room, we can change the pattern of the ball sprays, along with adjusting the ball speed, size and damping.
The third technique uses the Ratchet feature, also called Note Repeat Rate; one of the newer 'Operators' available in Bitwig. By increasing the ratcheting of individual notes in a chord distinctly and then applying the Quantize device set to 1/16th notes we can create interesting rhythmic chord patterns.
The fourth and final technique uses another 'Operator'; this time the Recurrence feature. By creating a very short 1/16th note loop of a chord and then adjusting the Recurrence rates of each note in the chord separately, we end up with beautiful patterns we would never think to program into the DAW.

Because of you, I switched to Bitwig for my songwriting. I almost gave up music entirely, but your videos on how to think about art have made me realize I should just continue, and persevere... And I am now getting onto something. I have been writing Darkwave inspired by The Cure, Lebanon Hanover and Molchat Doma, and I have been adapting Catholic prayers in Latin as songs. Sometimes, all it takes is a little help from a stranger to continue. So for that, thank you Tâches.
romans who killed jesus spoke latin
@@rhomboidman Indeed. It's also been the language in which the mass was held for a very long time. I have been to a few of them in the traditional form, and it's had an spiritual impact on me. Which is why I am continuing to make music at this point. Inspiration is an odd thing sometimes.
Sometimes when you give up music, you don't actually give up. You just take a long break that might take years. And then later, you find yourself getting back into it, after spending many years listening to others perform in concerts, or listening to sites like Spotify, etc. I've gone as long as over 10 years without doing anything with creating music, but would find myself coming back to it again and again until I was once again fully committed to the creation, and also had the funds and time to execute it.
That sounds amazing, what you're doing. I'd love to hear it!
i wanna hear that!
I shared this great video on my Facebook
So... let's start a Tâches fan club? :))
Thank you sir!
Best channel on YT!
With these tips (Operator and Ricochet in particular) I must say, really opened my eyes to the creative possibility bitwig has for ideas as simple as a chord ( 1 chord for that matter) that I'm feeling for the time of creation. I can really go to town with ideas and come up with new chorus and verse ideas from just the feel of this one chord. Very good for my workflow ideas.
I think one other good way to limit throughput of your notes is putting NoteGrid before instrument and dialing voices down on it instead of instrument. so then you'll be able to have overlapping release tails of your instrument, but sequence can be mono or 2 voices, etc.
I don’t compose or listen to house music as such, but I love the way you approach this genre. And your approach to bitwig is very inspiring and triggers a lot of my own creativity to run wild. Thank you and always excited to see your uploads.
Very inspiring stuff! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the tips!
Great tips, thanks!
Awesome! Excellent! Unique! Creative! Inspiring! Thanks!
Brilliant as ever.... Taa
You sir are a creative genius :-) thank you for navigating all these excellent Bitwig possibilities
Glad i subscribed, great vid! 🙏
Thank you for your very inspiring and fun teaching! Keep up the great work!
Found this channel recently. Love the way OP is narrating. Everything is so easy to understand and follow. Thank you keep up the good work. Subscribed.
I loved ricochet + quantize for some generated yet repeatable rhythmic patterns! What a fantastic idea!
Another nice few tip Taches. I only did the cross to Bitwig from Ableton recently and your vids have been very helpful.
These ideas are instantly usable for adding nice ambient textures too. a great bit of inspiration fuel in this stuff .⛽
amazing!
Mind blowing!!!
Really need to try this with my korg minilogue! Cheers from LA!
That video was indeed very useful
Yet another inspiring video from you. Thanks! I will use these great ways instead of Bitwigs rather limited arpeggiator next time.
I've seen so many videos about arp tricks in several daws, and they also explain very well how they work, but usually, it sounds lifeless and uninteresting. However, this is very explanatory and shows you can get very interesting and workable results. I just switched from Ableton and this video just made my day. Thank you so much sir!
wow amazing ideas in there. bitwig is soooo cool
very useful thanks a lot 🤘
What an amazing video! Thanks for sharing. It is very valuable to me
Fantastic ideas!! They all sound amazing. This winter I'm planning to finally make the move form Ableton to Bitwig thanks in no small part to your inspiring videos. Thanks so much for sharing and inspiring!
I'm excited for you!
Thanks Man!
Thank you sir!
Wonderfully simple and creative ideas here. I'm.going to experiment with these today, but hooking these up to an NDLR chord (pad) and drone section, and then hooking up the various parameters that impact the polyrythms with a midi controller. So, a dial-in live play set. 😊
I am so amazed and confused! Just left or (put Ableton Live to the side ) for the moment. Worried and thinking all of my Max devices I bought over the years ... and than here comes the Bit Wig Tool Box.. All native too .. (baffled). I am going to live on your channel, that I do know.. Really, nothing wrong with Ableton Live tbh, but oh my goodness, BitWig is such a mind-blowing powerhouse.. ..
Somehow I thought, you would create an Arpeggiator in the Note Grid...
Ha Ha you said pentagram instead of pentagon! Hilarious... Thanks for the great info.
It do be vibey though
You fancy AF clever ass MFer lol. These are really cool. Subscribed.
You always open my brain up like a can of worms 🪱 😂
Very cool, I gotta use Note Repeat more. a follow up question. Would it be possible to split up the generated notes to say 3 different instruments, so that 1 range of notes are played by lets say a cello, while the 2 not ranges are played by another etc..? if so how would you do it?
i need that lamp
This tutorial is how to make the mini motorway sound
How do you do this in Logic Pro X for the "Ratchet + Quantize" section?
Hey, I love all these ideas but I'm not sure if I'm being dense, but I literally can't figure out how to record the midi to another track. I've been rewinding and rewinding your vid trying to trace your mouse movements to figure out what you're doing but I just don't get it. I'm a total noob though.
Cheers for the vid.
If anyone fancies helping a brother out...?
Why the GUI font so blurred?
Increasing the GUI scaling a level would have immensely helped those in need (of a high resolution display)
Just a small question. At 13.35 you're stretching the selected notes x2 with a shortcut. How'd you do this? Did you map the note 200% scale to a shortcut key or is there a general key to do this?
This is a key command I’ve set 🥰
You can find a video I made on some of my favourite custom shortcuts here: czcams.com/video/FGntnEwUCtI/video.html
@ Thanks! That is very helpful. And also thanks for the inspirational video! Keep up the good works :)
This makes no sense and doesn't work anymore apparently. All of the random modes need a new midi node to trigger a different note selector.. so you can't have just 1 long midi note otherwise nothing gets triggered until the next midi note. Because its note based. Yet somehow you have round robin randomly picking note selectors with 1 long midi note
At which minute/second?
