I have several sets of the various types of water reactive markers\pens. I really try to not have duplicates (based on sub-type). 1. Love the Tombows. I haven't had any issues. I bought a few of the sets where I would not be buying duplicates, then filled out the collection via open stock. Only criticism is that the sets each have a blender pen, and several sets have a black pen. My suggestion to the company would be to simply sell the black & blender as it's own set. 2. Arteza Real Brush pens - very happy with them. And, Amazon tends to have hot buys, so my 96 set was a real bargain. 3. Marvey - some unique colors, but, yes, the nibs deteriorated, and the fine nib dried out so fast. 4. Arteza fine point. Beautiful, though there are few tutorials around for them, so they don't get as much use as other products. 5. Jane Davenport "watercolor brush" pens are okay, but, they didn't wow me. 6. The original Spectrum Aqua were a disappointment. They began fraying right away. (Don't have the new ones.) Lastly, Distress. I have the set because, well, they do match my other Distress products, and have those lovely colors. Unfortunately, the brush nib does fray, and the ultra fine point was a complete disappointment. Though not officially refillable, I use my re-inkers to bring some life back to them. I'll shut up, now. :)

Great comparison, thx. I did miss one of my favourite markers in the list though. The Zig Art & Graphic Twin marker, which has a rubber tip great for stamps and on rougher paper that would fray most felt tip pens. The result is also more of a watercolour with some grain in it, which I like very much. But my all time favourite was in it. The Faber Castell Pitt Artist Brush Pen. I love these so much, and are the best for bullet journalling. Even on 100 gsm paper, I can lay down so many layers without any bleeding and almost no ghosting. And you can do brush lettering with them that fits a A5 notebook. And then their white one is awesome, use one layer just to lighten colours, or more for more of a whiter highlight, on black background or paper for a blackboard chalk effect. I use it on all my artwork. These pens are a great all-rounder. Some art I've done with them in my bullet journal:

I bought a couple packs of the Tombows on a huge sale, expecting to return one because I wouldn't see the need to have even one! But they are incredible, really a joy! Vibrant, blend well, excellent tips. I'm glad to hear they last a long time. Your review helps make me fee even better about my purchase. People (not you) are somewhat critical of the blendability of many of these markers, but for blending, paper is really important, as is blending as soon as the ink is put down. This seems to be the case with all of them. They are dye, not pigment and of course, every color has a different ability to lift. And people say they tend to pill, but you can't really scrub with them. They're just a different medium. Anyway, love these comparison vids. Looking forward to more!

Lovely comparison video. I liked how you categorized the markers. I often forget about the water soluble aspect depending on which markers I’m using and for what purpose. I’ve colored in a ton of stamped images for art journaling the last couple of years. Although Brush Lettering has been on my Someday-Maybe list for years I haven’t made it a priority because of the hours of practice time that it requires and I don’t have a need for it in everyday life. I am happy to say that I have a nice selection of markers from each category. I would like the full set of Tombow and/or the ColorIt Markers - I remember when you got them and was intrigued by the refills. I’ll find your video about them for a closer look. I’ll be sure to use your link when my decision is made. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience with us. Have a great day and stay safe.

Great video Lindsay! I bought the full set of the Tim Holtz markers right when I was starting out with just adult coloring books and card making so I could figure out what colors from his pallet I liked and could buy inks in, but I would not recommend these markers. They’re maybe 4 years old but so many have dried out, but not used up so I try to refresh them with distress refresher and even still they seem to dry out right away again even with proper storage. The fine nib is a plastic piece that would fall out of several of the markers then I probably bent some of them pushing them back in. Long story short, overpriced for not a not great quality marker, you’re paying for his name and his color pallet.

Great review! I ordered the Ohuhu set of 36 for a Black Friday deal after seeing your previous review, , but they were lost in the mail and “unavailable” to re-deliver at the great price (only for $10 or $15). I almost ordered the Colorit ones, because I love the case and the ink availability. Then I saw a 48 set of Poetique brand on Amazon, and I ordered them.
They are SO beautiful... such vibrant, transparent colors. I think I commented previously on one of your videos about them. Thank you, but I didn't mean generally how to blend, but I was interested to see how each brand fared in blending tests. And not by using any other tools like water brushes or transferring them to plastic pallets, but how they actually work the way they were intended: directly from the pen to paper. I know some brands are meant to use like watercolors, but others like Faber-castell Pitt artist pens are not. I've realised they work okay on some papers but terribly on others where other water-based fiber pens work perfectly. So I'm looking for brands that blend well on paper, and act more like alcohol markers (even though they couldn't possibly work as well!) . I think Tombow work better than Pitt for example... And Fibracolor 100 different colors work great too.

I have a question tho: I’ve been using Tombow markers and I mostly like them but have become frustrated that sometimes the lines don’t blend out all the way, leaving an initial line that looks bad. Maybe it’s me or the paper I’m using? I do tend to use watercolor paper. Let me know if you have any thoughts and as always thanks for your wonderful review!

I know you answers this for me in a different video, that markers and highlighters should be stored flat. Why is that? Is it ink pressure or distribution in the barrel? Especially if they only have one nib? Just curious. Also, do you store your regular ball point pens and gel pens flat as well?

Dual tip pens are stored flat to keep both nibs inked. Liquid filled ones are brush up to avoid leaking. Ball point or single endedcmarkers can be stored flat or tip down in a cup. This is ideal but store however works best for you.

Karin Brush Markers, a set of 60 watercolor brush pens, sells for over $100! They get great reviews, however. I can't afford those so I'll stick with the Zigs when I want to watercolor stamped images. I bought the set of Zigs after I tried and did not like the Distress Markers - the small tips do not work and the brush ends fray and the markers dried out really fast. I was very disappointed because I love all the other Distress products.

I also have a differently branded version of those Ohuhu double ended makers and the tips fray *very* quickly. (one of them even before it had arrived, which was a bummer.) They also have the detail end drying out problem and for a few of them, the whole marker dried out. I was able to gently pry off one of the ends and add some water to revive it but they're basically junk markers, sadly.
Also, I had a huge problem with the Marabu markers that they just tore up every paper I tried them on, so i wound up giving them away. They seemed really nice, but just were too hard and harsh.

Anyways, the Chromatek brand looks interesting if you're in the market to try out some new products! They actually include a pack of practice watercolor pages that have designs printed on them with a very light ink that isn't visible after you paint it. They look super useful to practice coloring/painting without having to worry about your drawing ability, and I've never seen coloring/painting pages designed so the outline doesn't show through when you're finished, making it look like you drew the sketch and painted it like normal. They even have tutorials on youtube for each page, and in 3 levels of difficulty, which isn't something I've seen other brands do. From the few reviews I did find, the watercolor paper looked quite thick and sturdy, and I was impressed by how well they turned out. They also have a watercolor palette that comes with similar practice pages, so that seems to be a theme with their product line. @Amywazwaz06 Před 3 lety +8

I must say I really like that Lindsey does talk about older products that are not available anymore. As many of us crafters have been around for 20-30 crafting and we have built up collections of many different types of products. So it is nice to see someone bring out the older ones and compare them to current ones. I think it definitely saves some people money by doing that.
Sometimes we see the newest products and think we need those as well and don’t realize we have something in our stash similar but not exactly the same. Many people are on limited budgets and can’t afford so much. Seeing older products that may not be around now may help someone when they see a new version of it released again to know about it and how it may work for them. In this industry every thing comes back around again.
I think Lindsey just got caught up in doing the review and forgot to write down all the names as she did when she started. Her videos usually have closed captioning on them and those should help you to catch some of the names if you missed them.
