Jess speaking:
This isn't a notebook. It's my parking lot!
[video plays a sound effect of a car horn beeping]
One of the reasons it's really hard for ADHD-ers to stay focused is, our brain keeps reminding us of other things that we need to do.
And sometimes, we go and do those things, because we don't want to forget, and also it's really hard to work when your brain keeps reminding you of something that you haven't done yet.
[Jess starts poking at the screen, like a nagging thought]
Did you do the thing? Did you do the thing? Don't forget to do the thing!
[Jess resumes speaking]
Enter: the parking lot!
When you're finished working on whatever you're working on, you can take a look, and see if any of it actually needs to get done right away.

Hope this type of pinned transcription exists for every video. It's very useful to follow through.
Ty for putting the transscript here! I have adhd and i find it easier to focus on something while multitasking and so this helped me focus on the video :) (i can read AND hear you say it so its nice)
@@therealb888 We definitely try! We may be late, and we may sometimes miss one, but we do try to make sure transcripts are on our shorts. 🧡 We know they're helpful but it's great hearing directly from you all about it's usefulness.

Thanks! I'm in a bus and I don't wanna turn up the volume
So other people don’t have intrusive thoughts like this? Sometimes I don’t know what’s normal for other people 😂
Ikr?!
Totally second that Calgal B
That's true
It's helpful to hear that, right? Makes me think I should see someone about this...
@@anjobanjo1221 i definitely would. i scheduled a meeting with a learning disability counselor at my school cause im pretty certain i have adhd but i wanna get diagnosed and figure out what it is so i can treat it
I've been using parking lots for years and it has a major problem to it. Although writing those reminders are euphoric, going over what you've written is anxiety inducing. This is why I have countless parking lots, some of them so big they have the same task written over and over in the same parking lot, as well as in others. I never fill up the parking lot either. Some of them get so chocked full of tasks, the anxiety kicks in to write in them cause I might get reminded of stuff I don't wanna do, but have to do. So I start a new one.
same, any advice?
I think it's easier for her because she is on medication
I agree, lists/notes don't always work
I find that if I make lists but don't regularly check up on them they become waiting lines (imagine the 15 year old cashier wanting to go to the bathroom but has a line of customers waiting)
Have your parking lot have 3 lanes. Green, yellow, red. You decide the urgency of a thing in the moment, write down the hour it is when you thought of it, the name of the thing, then the hour you'd like it done by. Followed by an estimation of time it will take to do by your estimate, rounded up to 15 minute blocks. Then every couple of hours (or when a task is complete) check up on the list, if the time left to do a yellow or red is approaching or 1.5x your estimate, that's what you should get on to (consider your situation of course) you can also shuffle things around at this time. If I'm rereminded of something that's already on the list put a marker on it (I use quick tallies in the corner) I mostly find that the greens become a long list of random tangents of thoughts (new design ideas for my kitchen or random gadgets I would like to invent) things that I can do in my spare time and aren't important but my brain really wants to make sure that I should remember it. Writing it down satisfies that monkey in my brain, while reducing the distracting thoughts. The yellow and reds are what is really important. If you don't separate them and just make one list you can loose the important things in the clutter which can make you axncious. I think the example she's talking about is mostly a green list.
These lists can go over into other days as well, but try to clear the green list.
That whole "did you do the thing?!" thoughtloop feels like its consuming my whole life. I can (do) think of dozens of tasks at any given moment, and I have a really hard time turning any of that chaos into action. Cant tell what is and isnt important, cant pause it long enough to pick one, get paralyzed by overwhelm... and another day ends with my mind still screaming "DO THE THING."
Yes, but we try again, and again, and again..., because what else can we do?
Totally same! Since I freeze instead of picking anything, my counselor suggested that I number them off then roll dice and go with the corresponding item on the list. (Although, I love this idea, my perfectionism has me feeling like I need every item on every list added to a single list first)
@@heavenlee4117 truth. Better or worse, we keep going.
@@MrsTikiGod we might have the same counselor lol. I read everything, and had never encountered this trick until he mentioned it to me a few weeks ago.
SAME!!!, a human being can ONLY fo so many things in one given day !! 😑
Totally relateable!!,
Diag. Here!!
This has been a major problem for me as I've gotten older and got out of high-school. I started calling my my running list the "rabbit hole" but I like parking lot better just because it implies to my brain that this will be done, it is just parked, rather than down a hole haha
I agree! I always just called my list a "To Do List," but I like "Parking Lot" much better.
I adopted the term brain dump from the bullet journal community 😂
@@kathy608 ya i jus have an app ticktick for things, alexa reminders when near it , calendar app on ms
yours is more realistic lol

Autistic AND possible ADHD...Which can be co-ocurring neurological conditions in about 40-50% of individuals with Autism!...Fun times! 😎😛😎
My parking lot is on my phone. I use a little note-taking app (it's called ColorNote, in case anybody wants to check it out) with various items on it: shopping list, general to do's, projects for our new house, etc etc etc. I can check these items off the list, sort them to the bottom of the list so I know what I've accomplished, and brain dump regularly so that my brain isn't constantly saying, "What was that thing I wanted to remember 5 minutes ago? Oh well, hope it wasn't important!" It's also where I put the location of items I will need later, knowing full well that the "highly intuitive place" where I put them will have vanished from my brain when I have to go back and find them again.
Oh, I had the same app, for at least 6 years now,
I use it the same way, and that was a life saver,
Actually I used it before even know or suspect I 've ADHD, back then I didn't even ku what ADHD was!!!
But the big problem now, that when I think i would lose me mobile and couldn't get to restore the backup, I always become anxious thinking this , ,
I have a revolving stack of “notes” on my desk
saaaame
I used to do that, until it became a pile of random papers 😅
Switched over to MS tasks because I can hook it with my outlook and keep it on my phone as a widget and it's helped keep a lot of stuff straight while I'm super busy
@@ChuckD99 I’ve tried to use the phone. I think the task of writing it down is a line of dopamine my brain needs
My parking lot is so big it needs a management system and maybe make it payed parking so not too many thoughts are able to park there, and maybe some reserved parking spaces for specific things. My parking lot is a mess, I now try to make 1 list first then make it again in a new version where I organise it in 4 categories: must, important, want to and later. So I can maneuvre a bit better through my parking lot, it feels like it takes to much time to set up but when I have it organised for a day its amazing.
Sounds like you need closing times and a towing service to complete your system.
The worst is that your brain constantly reminds you of a task you have to do, but the moment you go sit to actually do it, it gets distracted and you don't do it.
My adhd therapist got me into writing my to do list in a notebook and how to prioritize my chores. I must say that it's been incredibly effective. Plus it's nice seeing everything that I've accomplished. It really does establish good habits.
The big thing I've learned is to always leave it in a dedicated spot because I've lost it a dozen times.
Ok, but what do you do when you think of something for your notebook and you don't have it with you?? If I don't write something down right when I think of it, literally 2 seconds later it's gone. I have notebooks and sticky notes everywhere... help!
Wow, you found an ADHD therapist? Luckyyyyyy...
@@heavenlee4117 DON'T GIVE UP! I almost did. In fact, I almost gave up hope after finding out it would cost over $250 an hour for a therapist (out of my own pocket) because I didn't have insurance. There's plenty of resources out there though and admittedly, it took me some time. I can't promise you anything, but I'll gladly spend time to help you to find someone who can help you. Please let me know.
@@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane Not sure how OP does it but I have two places for my calendar (which is my usual to-do-list in addition to my phone's memo app): the calendar is always at my desk at home or in my bag. When I'm done marking down something in it, I put it back either in the bag or at the one spot on my desk. When I don't have my bag and calendar with me, I use my phone to write stuff down.
I’m glad there’s plenty of ADHD ppl this actually works for.
Unfortunately I’m not one of them.
My brain also isn’t very specific abt what it’s trying to remind me.
I’ll have a vague feeling that I’m forgetting something but it just never comes to me.
I’ll try to start notebooks or sticky notes or even phone notes and after a day I just forget to look at them or write them down. Even worse I almost always feel like I have no energy so even when I remember something I’ll just not have the drive to do the thing. :(
Me too
Reminds me of the book "Getting Things Done". One of the key principles is a way to capture tasks and other things in a trusted place so that your brain doesn't have to keep them in memory.
I often wondered if David Allen (author of Get Things Done), as well as some Buddhist monks, invented their techniques because they had some form of ADHD... 😳 😜
I don’t know if I had adhd, but I find having a notebook to use as a parking lot very helpful. The thing I have to be careful about is having too many notebooks in too many places.
My place of work had given an hour recently to discuss ADHD with many employees online. I had a few members of staff discuss their similar experiences or a family member. I had been informed my place of work will start a ND group. I will be fully involved. Thank You for being my GO TO for information..x🇬🇧👍🏻
What is an ND group? Is this like an ERG?

Then I said, Yes I am very funny, it's just that other people are a Bad Audience.🙂🇬🇧
I guess I need a parking lot! With car stickers!! I'm just worried that I'll lose the notebook and go look for it, get distracted and then forget what I needed to write down 😆
Yayyyy! It's ADHD awareness month 👏🏼🎉😊💖🧠 Happy ADHD awareness month every body! Woohoo! *Does cartwheels*
Oh it’s oct right? I have so much do now
I use post-it notes at work, then bring them home! I keep a relatively color-coded system based on what type of note it is, having one be spiritual insights/thoughts, one for to-do items, another for impressions for therapy/other upcoming meetings.
I do have to say though having meds has benefited my life in such an exponential way.
In what ways have meds helped you?
List anything and everything you can think of I’m curious to know because I want to get an idea of how they might help me.
I color code mine so I can see what's more important right away.
“Project management” teaches how to prioritize urgency of tasks. Valuable training!
I’m sorry and I’m late to this but my adhd brain was so distracted from that cute car sticker u put on the paper on cue it’s so cute it makes me so happy for some reason! 😭😂💕
it takes so much energy to keep going and writing stuff down and then even more to refocus on the main tasks it's actually exhausting to do just one thing
Honestly I'm so glad that I found hour channel I've been diagnosed with ADHD for the last 12 years and medication has helped slightly but it's so hard that my family doesn't understand but my friends are a lot more forgiving and empathic. You make me feel less alone.
I love how you imitate my mind by pointing and saying “did you do the thing, did you do the thing, don’t forget to do the thing” Haha. Thanks, I needed that 😊
The speed with which you speak is so pleasing to my brain ❤
So funny story, I got a notebook for work and went in and someone had actually bought me one so I don't make lists everywhere :'3
A. Really thoughtful of them!! ;;w;;
B. Now I have a spare notebook (what an an unusual situation /s) .... guess I know where I'm going to park :P
I love having a spare notebook...you know, for emergencies xD
I stumbled upon this on my own years ago. Called it the "distraction dump" and also included the million curiosity questions I got the urge to look up on Google or Wikipedia.
This is why I love my bullet journal!
I always use a parking lot during meetings and training. It helps me stay on task and be present.
I've done this at work for a while now and it's made a massive difference for me!
Finally found a strategy to have a "parking lot" that's working at the moment at home and loving it too. Feels great to be able to remind myself what I need to do with a bit less stress.
I absolutely love this! This hit the nail exactly on the head. Struck me right at center mass. Did you do the thing, did you do the thing, OMG. I am still bust out laughing at this. Thanks again!
YES, exactly why I do things right away sometimes even though I don't have the time.
Happy ADHD Awareness Month 🧡🧡
Yes! Same to you! How cool is it to have a whole month just of ADHD awareness? 🎉👏🏼🧠
Wow is it really? I didn’t know that, that makes me happy
Great tip…I’m a lawyer with ADHD & I keep a desk with ONLY the thing I’m working on plus a legal pad I use for this specific purpose (I call it my “waiting room”).
Great video👍 the Parking lot is a great idea and I love the stickers, my ADHD has decided that one or two things that really need to get done are now becoming abandoned vehicles 😞
The reminders app and notes app has been my life saver on my iPhone.
I LOVE the term parking lot! I have a lil book too! I am now gonna call it a parking lot 🤣
My “parking lot” is comprised of sticky notes on my wall. It works for me, though. I’m glad to see someone else does this too!
Your helpful tips make a really big difference. At least this one did in my life, thank you
I use post-it notes at work for this. well, that and stacks of papers; medical notes to my left need to be charted and the ones to my right have been charted and need to be shredded. There's someone very satisfying about shredding a finished to-do list
As a high school teacher, my parking lot lists are my life! I only wish I was better at organizing those into areas of importance.
Omg I've been doing this since the pandemic for zoom classes!!
*I call it my distraction journal.* Not only for to-do's, but also things I suddenly want to google, or some inspiring idea that pops into my brain :D *It's become a very positive way for me to handle my distractions, because it reminds me how creative my brain is.*
The only journal I could ever keep up with haha
Every writable surface on my desk has become my parking lot since working from home, even before I knew what that was… although my first one was a proper notebook and was a suggestion by my then boyfriend (now husband) 20 years ago when I was in college.
When we first started living together he was amazed at how I’d have some mornings where I got so much productive stuff done and others that I would just “do nothing” but doodle/write in/flip through my parking lot for hours until I looked at the clock in a panic, took a 5 minute shower, dressed, and rush off to work in a mad frenzy.
Fellow ADHD’er here that is incredibly helpful I need to try that and what a great way to explain it
This is great! I figured this skill out for myself a long time ago. Parking lot is a great term for it.
This is also helpful if you're having anxiety and spinning thoughts in the middle of the night instead of sleeping. Write it down so you know you won't forget about it in the morning then set it aside and sleep.
my ADHD coach calls it "chaos box" :)
wow, I've been thinking of doing this same thing! Wow! You Read my mind Jess!!!!
Yes!!! I set reminders on my iPhone as soon as it hits my brain.
Ohmygoodness this is genius! Seriously, life changing. 🤯
For me it's hard to think because everything feels like it's going really fast
Me: Great idea imma do this!
Also me: eh I'll do it later
* forgets*
So good! I do some of this intuitively already, I suppose! But I still get derailed far too often. Will try to do this more often. Thank you, Jess!
I've added this to my daily workflow. I call them Pop-up Thoughts! Since I work from home and set my own schedule, I need to be a little more strict with how I approach tasks. There's a popular piece of advice from (where I read it) David Allen's "Getting Things Done" that says to do any task that takes less than a minute to do. Considering I would look at everything on the list and think "Yeah I can do it now" in the middle of my workday, it's best for me to set time aside to do a bunch of little things.
The parking lot would be useless for me. My adhd has always felt like ok you just need to stay awake. IRONICALLY I have a hard time falling asleep.
I definitely do that. I have one on my phone, a white board in the hall and a paper on the fridge
Oh, this is a brilliant idea! Thank you!!
This is it. I should just stfu & get my diagnosis. I came across this channel in June & I was in tears. I wanted to contact you but guess what I did?!
This IS EXACTLY ONE OF MY GREATEST ISSUES! SO MUCH PENDING & WHEN I START DOING I HAVE A MENTAL TRAFFIC JAM OF
WHAT TO DO FIRST!
WHAT I HAVENT FINISHED WHILE WORKING ON SOMETHING
FORGETTING WHAT ELSE I WAS SUPPOSE TO DO BY THE TIME I FINISH A TASK, IF AT ALL I FINISH A TASK!
Few more tips:
1. Start the day with a to do list.
2. Write as down as you remind yourself.
3. Finish the task with the peace of mind that you have others written down.
4. Reward yourself if you finish.
5. Prioritise the remaining .
6. Start over.
7. Share your tips & tricks below.
8. ACTUALLY PERFORM ANY TIPS, PLANS, STRATEGIES IN ACTION...JUST DO IT!
I gave up trying to tote around notebooks, even tiny ones - they always got messed up in my purse.
So now I just have a big ol blank sheet of paper taped next to my calendar on the wall in the kitchen (where I pass through the most) and it works better for me!
As I think of stuff needing done or things I need to buy, I'll just jot it down as I pass by because the kitchen is 30 seconds away from anywhere in my apt.
Then when it's time to go do the thing or shop, I have a semi first draft of stuff I need.
It's not perfect or pretty but it helps me!
Oh! Mine is called external Mind. Which is a diary and to do list in one book. Like a bullet journal light without planning ahead. Keep what works for you!
My parking lot is Apple Notes combined with Siri. Having the ability to say “Hey Siri, make a note” has been a complete game changer. Actually organizing the notes is another problem entirely, and I’m still perfecting it, but life has been so much better since I acquired the ability to send all my squirrels to my Apple Notes. Plus, I can easily search for that squirrel and find it when I need it again!
For me, a "parking lot" a great thing, BUT certainly not perfect. It kind of works at my working place. If I work THERE. So, okay, I notice that I tend to work e.g. at a certain spot on the floor more often and I put it there. But usually I want to take my notes with me and make notes on the go. The biggest issue there is that I have to pull out a pen. I tried everything, from just clipping it on, purchased pen pouches to diy elastic bands at the pen to just attach it to the notebook. Tried a thousand pens. Eventually, I found a solution working for me most times, but still,.........
So what was your solution? I have the problem of things popping in my head at inopportune times (when I don't have paper and/or pen) and then they are forgotten so quickly because I couldn't write them down. Similarly, I'll have a pen and say, a sticky note at work and be able to write down something I need to look into further later, and the note becomes lost eventually in the Vast Note Tornado of my world.
I do this with my ADHD coaching clients. I call it a Don't Worry List.
Excellent name! I call mine my "Shiny Object List" 😀
I've started doing this, it works so well!
I used to make a to-do list every morning when I was in college before I realized I had ADHD. It helped a TON and in hindsight I can see why lol
She low key saved my life
I also have that and I have had that long before I was diagnosed. you can never write too much on a to do list.
i tried this for past two days, and it really helps!! tysm
My current parking lot is a notes list on my phone. It has a great checkbox feature so when I've completed something I can check it off AND IT MOVES TO THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST. I like this because it's out of the way but I can still see the things I've accomplished, which makes me feel good. Gimme that dopamine!
My only problem with the notebook is when others change the time, day on me with plans and expect me to reconfigure without me consulting the notebook. Agitation will be forthcoming as well as the adrenalin surge
This is my notes app for me, but I love the idea of a physical note book (assuming I don't lose it)! I even have to keep notes of what to talk about with my therapist bc I will forget
I have my bullet journal set up in a binder so I can always keep the first few pages for just this. I need to have only one book that can’t be lost and can be as dynamic as possible 😂
Thank you 😆 I am so happy some people get it. My parents don’t at all
Great Idea, but now I'm still thinking how I bring it everywhere 😅
Reminders app on iphone does an excellent job at this!!
My dad and I have adhd and we both have a note book to remind us of things we need to do
I like this. I've been doing something similar for years but I think I could do this maybe with a little tweaking so it didn't get overwhelming. and I like the term parking lot because it doesn't sound like the thing will be ignored, just parked for a bit. 👍
I started doing this. I even tied a tiny notebook to a lanyard, clipped on a pen, and I wear the lanyard around my waist so I always have it nearby.
The Parking Lot notebook is just brilliant. I write all sorts in it such as when I cooked a joint, need to wash a particular thing. Or something to look up later.
Told my sis in law about it. She's not ADHD, but has been under some stress and keeps forgetting bits. She thinks it's brilliant too.
My parkinglot is the app Todoist. Here I dump all the stuff that pops in my head and my partner can watch with me. Every so often I reread the list and go ‘OH YEAH!” or “No… that’s unnecessary”. The fact that I wrote it down and can add dates to the to do’s and the app will remind me is a great help 😊
Wonderful and helpful videoes you put out! I am Now working full time on finding ways to deal with my undiagnosed adhd (that I’ve realised over the recent year more and more that I have). It takes a toll on my marriage, and I have to work on this! I recommend the book the Adhd effect on marriage for you to read and advise others to read to help their marriage / relationship ❤️ best regard, Andy 🥰
I did this at work but then stopped because i didn't want my boss thinking I was doing personal things during work time!
I have hundreds of those small cue cards (5 by 3 inches or so) next to my computer and a pen right with them.
That way when I have ideas I just take one, make a few notes to not forget and put it away - then I'll continue doing whatever I was doing.
Those little things are a godsend! And in the office, where I don't have those cue cards, I just use 2 post-it notes and stick them together back to back. My cue card holder's content is quite colorful! :-D
I REALLY wanted to go to the store to buy pine scented candles today instead of work. Thankfully that would have taken a lot of effort so I didn't do it. But I felt it would be really comfortable working with the scent of pine in the air!
I have been using this for a while now and it helps!! Also, I can't just have one parking lot because then I stress about having to have it with me. I just have em scattered round the house.
Yep. I do a brain dump at work now and then I categorize my tasks down to even just grabbing more supplies out of the closet. I can then see what I need to do versus what can be delegated to a coworker or left for another day.
I find it helpful to have a parking lot note board above my desk (student so only have one room) I can't loose it, it's visual on display from my bed, sitting area and working area plus I can wipe stuff off to make it less scary (alternatively could rip pages out). I would love a parking lot 'app' for the things to be displayed on my home page (like a widgit) for when out the house. Though sometimes I can visualise writing it on the board at home and it eases the anxiety of other things I need to do (plus I'll remember it more often when do this visualisation)
Yes 10000% gonna try this
I used the 40¢ memo pads at Walmart for this! My grandpa (70 years old, never diagnosed, approaches problems in a similar way to me) swore by it back in the day. Decided to give it a shot, and having a pocket-sized second brain to hold my thoughts in has been a game changer for me. If there’s any hack you’re gonna try, I highly recommend this one!
I have a notes section in my Notion planner so I can dump my ideas/thoughts/tips and free up space in my brain... didn't know it was a good ADHD strategy (i suspect that I have it)
i use google notes for this. have the app pinned in my browser and on my phone so it’s always there for me to write down things
My calendar on my phone is my life line...I put it there and I can move on...I can just be present and don't think about the future projects and being paralyzed from the fear of running out of time!! It's exhausting thank goodness for meds!!!😂😂
I have more than one “parking lot” to help me keep them organized, and from getting too big/anxiety-inducing.
I have my scary, big one in a Google doc (which is just everything I can think of that I want to do or remember - it’s bookmarked in my browser bar, and I reference/update it when I can).
Then I have a day-to-day planner page of things that are more time sensitive and need to be done in the near future (and each morning I make my new planner page referencing the previous one).
And then I have a “current plan” page on a notepad which I reference/update constantly, and that’s how I prioritize what to do first, and if I ever forget or get sidetracked from that, I can go back and check what my original plan was. (I’ll just take pieces of the daily planner tasks and put them in the “current plan,” to break it up more and make it more manageable. Once the current plan runs out or isn’t working anymore, I go back to the daily page and start a new current plan.)
It’s not a perfect system, but as a master, lifelong procrastinator, using this system is the most in control of my time that I’ve ever felt.
I call it my task dump 😂 and i have tons of them hahaha i even have an idea dump, and a life journal (which is not a dump 😂)
this is brilliant
Bro it’s not always things I have to do, it’s things like “what if I push that weird button on my computer that says “restore to factory””
I remember my dad teasing me that I needed to have a list of all my lists (I didn't) when I was getting ready to go off to university. I didn't know I had ADHD way back then - it wasn't a widely known difference 40+ years ago - but I did know I had to find a way to manage things.
The benefit isn't just about not forgetting what needs to be done. It's the not feeling compelled to keep thinking over and over 'Don't forget to do x and y and z' which takes up too much headspace when it's hard enough just trying to get on with the current task. Like trying to keep all the plates spinning.
This ❤️ so i use something like this but for ruminating because my brain (working out a problem or trying not forget something) will keep at it. So before i leave work most days, i write a note to my next day self with tasks or projects I'm thinking about or didn't finish. This way like parking lot, I've offloaded them. I do this with my google keep as bullet journal as well on my phone.
My co worker hates how messy my to do lists are, just sent him this as it makes so much more sense.
I LOVE THIS IDEA
