- In this video I try comb painting of hen puddle duck feathers on a gunning decoy by making a custom comb. Some successes and some failures but a great learning experience. I thought I would share this approach as another potential way to paint hen puddle duck gunning decoys in a relatively quick fashion.
I like the idea Tom. Obviously it would not be a competition decoy, but with a gunner, you just have to fool a duck. I think you should hunt over them and see if they work.
Thanks Brian. I think it would take some effort to perfect this but wanted to give it a try.
Tom, one of the things I have discovered with the heavy body acrylics was that it has worked better for me to go straight heavy body without the gesso. I am using the Golden brand instead of the Liquidtex like you use. so the Golden may be a thinner texture. It seems to me I can get a better outcome and workability without thinning with gesso.
THank you for trying new things in this video. It looks like you will be able to make it a usable option.

That’s makes sense. Thanks for that feedback Bruce.
Another Great Video! Thanks for Sharing
Thanks for watching!
Thank you !
Great video. Time to experiment
Thanks and have fun Kevin!
Hi, not sure if I would use this technique , I understand the idea , but not as easy as with tighter lines. Maybe make smaller feathers?. I don’t know. Nice try though, and I like how you’ve got people to think outside the box. Thank you.
I think I agree with you Richard. Especially for those who have painting skills. Tough to control the comb in this application.
I don't think it needs to be that accurate a rendition to work as a decoy
I’m sure you’re right Stephen. Just wanted to give it a try.
Very interesting but I don’t care for the looks
I agree. It would take more work to clean it up and not sure it would be worth the effort.
