- Take an inside look at South Metro Fire Rescue's 911 Communications Center (MetCom) and the Incident Dispatch Team.
MetCom is accredited through the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch and their training program is certified by APCO Project 33 standards. MetCom's Dispatchers work 24 hour shifts, they are the only civilian dispatch center in Colorado that enjoys this schedule.
Literally the most impressive dispatching system I've ever heard of!
But is it safe
Tyler Haigh How would it not be safe?
I have seen Genius made dispatch systems in poor cities but in big cities yes this is the best!
4:01 wow i didn't know Eric was a dispacher
Respect from ND. I was surprised see South Metro, CO had a CZcams channel! When I was about a year on the job (now 4.5yrs) I gave a station tour to someone who rides on the heavy rescue for South Metro Fire Rescue, CO. He stopped by with his kid to get a station tour and just visit. Unfortunately the tour was cut short because we were dispatched to a call and as I left he was nice enough to give me a south metro tshit. So if you read this thanks for the shirt and thank you for stopping by!!
Cool post thanks for sharing
Eric thanks for the cardiac arrest save and baby girl delivered
Respect from South Africa ! Wish we had half the resources you folks do :D
Thank You SMFR
I thought it was Netcom! Thanks for you clarifying on the description!

What? 24hrs shift as a dispatcher...cheese....that sound terrible
They are given 6 hours to sleep in that 24 hour period.
Were I live we do 12 hour shifts...
Do you have paramedic training
This is My dream! And my dream come true watch these lit shows about reality of fire fighting
These look like uniformed dispatchers. Is it staffed with civilians? We have uniformed dispatchers in Albuquerque. 24hr shifts, 4 battalions in dispatch. 109K calls last year. Minimum staffing is 6
Oh no, they have an automated dispatch system (That annoying voice that dispatches units.) Poor souls. I will always prefer to have a real human voice.
I agree
Means they have to stop talking to the caller to talk to the fire fighters.
I kinda grew to like Betty :D
At first it took some getting used to, but we are on version 3 or 4 and the announcements are almost fluid by now. This makes it way easier to listen and actually understand/get what she's saying. That used to be the problem with early versions where it was SO robotic that the first question on the rig was: Anyone understood the address?

That is a larger issue that some just cannot seem get a grip onto, we can stay on the landline speaking with the caller while typing in the call then being able to hit the "Enter" or "Send" button and not miss a beat with the caller. No, I don't work at this center, but I wish the technology was around back during my few decades of work. It is fabulous.
And humans aren’t always consistent with how they speak
If you're on for three days, how in the world do you spend 72 hours awake???
I feel for those poor souls that have to listen to that automated dispatch voice!!
Im curious as to why the dispatchers keep a portable radio on their desk.
It's very common in most 9-1-1 centers. A portable is an easy backup if the desktop radio goes down or if they have to evacuate the comms center.
What is the call volume like at METCOM?
Awesome! Thanks for the quick response!
South Metro Fire Rescue PIO per hour?
What about false alarms? And what is that rate? Year, week, fay, hour what? Depending on that rate my city of three stations may have more then that and that does not count ambulances cause out hospital runs ambulances we run one fire rescue unit so if there is any more then one fire medical call that takes away front eh engine or truck mainly if the rescue unit is not close!!!
what's the song

big and strong department I likes that
I am sorry but i can not find my self to be able to trust a dispatcher that does a 24 hr shift with maybe 6 hrs sleep to do the job correctly and safely who ever came up with this really needs to rethink it cause it's not safe what so ever
Sadly I agree!!! Were I live we already get miss dispatched manly in my neighborhood and if we switch to 24 our 6 hour sleep time shift or less sleep time it would happen a lot more...
Not fun being woken up in middle of the night by police or someone for a medical call that you did not even make...
“I made this up but yes it has happened”
We live in a small city of 1 police station for city and county sheriff 3 stations one ambulances barn aka bay a state police station 15 minutes out that sometimes uses the city station and then a FBI area in another city 30 minutes out... thankfully the FBIs are never needed!!!
6 hours sleep in a 24 hour span is pretty much standard.
I would rather voice dispatch then type... I am slow and not great with spelling on computers... were I live you have a choice and I think all but one choose typing because it is faster they claimed... no it was not me I am only a 9th grader!
