Zayd has always fascinated me as a companion of the prophet, and I was always very interested to understand how come he, or his son Usama after him have so little interest within the overall scheme of Islamic History. After this podcast came out, I did purchase Professor's David Powers book Zayd, and to be honest, while it was an interesting read, the conclusion was a little disappointing. A few paragraph at the end discuss the possibility of the verses of Zayd and Zaynab were introduced during the Umayyad era, but nothing really built up to it. It felt like a conclusion that was out of order relative to what was built up in previous chapters.
Overall, I do not regret buying the book, it was a good read still, I appreciated the biblical references/models added, it's just that there was no build up to the final conclusion by the author. Maybe it needs another book where there is a deeper dive on the Abdelmalik ibn Marwan codex and Zayd's story.

Why would god do something like this these cannot be words of a Devine god getting involved with this type of matter. People see beauty everyday doesn’t mean I go and try to marry her. Even Abubakar was reluctant to marry his daughter aisha to mohammad.

Zaynab was supposed to have been the Prophet's cousin. She was a widow. He arranged for her to marry Zayd. I find it hard to believe that the Prophet dd not know what she looked like before he arranged for the marriage to Zayd. It doesn't make sense that he just fell in love with her all of a sudden.

Well it makes sense in the story behind it. He went to see Zayd and upon entering his dwelling, he saw zaynab, half naked in her dressing gown.
Muhammad was always keen on trying out different types of women and when he saw her in that state, his member got activated and he said "praise Allah, the one who flipped my heart for you"
The whole thing is hilarious, Muhammad was a dirty little man 😂

33:36: “If and when clear-cut orders are issued from the divine Government (قَضَى اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ), it is not permissible for the responsible individuals (لِمُؤْمِنٍ) and such groups/bodies (مُؤْمِنَةٍ) to exercise their own discretion (لَهُمُ الْخِيَرَةُ) in carrying out the orders given to them (أَمْرِهِمْ). Whoever of the responsible officials would rebel against the divine Government (یعص اللہ و رسولہ ) will be construed as having gone into manifest transgression.”
    VERSE 33:37: آیت : ۳۳/۳۷

33:37: “Do remember in this connection the case of the one whom God and thou had rewarded (given a senior position); when you had ordered him by saying:
“keep united with your close ally (أَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ) and remain cautious and god-fearing in respect of divine Government’s directives (وَاتَّقِ اللَّهَ); you are known to keep those strategic affairs concealed under your personal knowledge (وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ) which the divine Government wanted to be acted upon openly (مَا اللَّهُ مُبْدِيهِ), just because you fear reaction from some people (وَتَخْشَى النَّاسَ ); whereas, divine Government’s disobedience was more liable to be afraid of (وَاللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخْشَاهُ); and when it was agreed that an increase (or a raise) in the manpower from the present level (زَيْدٌ مِّنْهَا) had become an inevitable necessity (وَطَرًا), we had made you join hands with that allied group (زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا) in order to establish a precedent for other law enforcers (الْمُؤْمِنِينَ) not to hesitate ( لَا يَكُونَ حَرَجٌ) in enrolling into their ranks (أَزْوَاجِ) those who seek to be their close associates (أَدْعِيَائِهِمْ), if they may have taken such a decision in view of their mandatory requirements (وَطَرًا). And thus Divine Government’s orders may have been implemented (أَمْرُ اللَّهِ مَفْعُولًا)”.”
    VERSE 33:38:

    مَّا كَانَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ مِنْ حَرَجٍ فِيمَا فَرَضَ اللَّهُ لَهُ ۖ سُنَّةَ اللَّهِ فِي الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِن قَبْلُ ۚ وَكَانَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ قَدَرًا مَّقْدُورًا

33:38: “Your Supreme Leader (النَّبِيِّ) cannot be blameworthy for carrying out the duties that God has ordained for him. Such was God’s way with those that have passed in earlier times. God’s will is a law which becomes applicable without fail.”

The owner of the house is one of the people who does not have mercy, by God, my brother. The neighbors saw us crying and came back. They came back to talk to the neighbors and we were given the weekend. So we made him swear by God. He will take us out into the street. Have mercy on him and us. Our country is due to this war and we do not find food for our day, and my brothers and I live in a difficult life. Our father died, may God have mercy on him, and we have no one in this world who was with us in these harsh circumstances. My younger brothers went out into the street and saw...The neighbors eat and stand at their door in order to give them bread even if they break it. By God, to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, they closed the door and expelled them and came back crying. They are dying of hunger. If you think that Zaynab who was prophet's own cousin with whom he interacted regularly even before the hijab verses came down was unknown to him 😅. He almost compelled the marriage of Zainab and Zayd to break the discriminatory social customs. And it's quite stupid to believe that he would just decide one day that he wants to marry Zainab...

Zayd was a slave but kind treatment of Muhammad to him made him a fan. when father and uncle of Zayd came to Makkah to pay money to purchase his freedom, Muhammad refused to accept any money and announced that Zayd is free and if he wishes, he could go to his family. But Zayd preferred to stay with Muhammad rather going to his father and mother. Muhammad announced him as adopted son. People then called Zayd as son of Muhammad. it was a Pre Islamuc custom according to cultural norms of pagan society in Arabia. But Quran changed the custom and declared that adopted children are not real children and should be called after name of their real father. So people then called Zayd as son of Harith (his own father). This event fixed an important rule in Islamic legislation and jurispudence. Secondly Zainab was Muhammad's cousin. He knew her very well since her childhood. She was not an alien for him. Accusation of Muhammad being fascinated by Zainab's beauty is only a false charge by Christian missionries and orientalists. if it was real, would be definitely mentioned by women of that siciety but never a single mention in any tradition from that time. Muhammad himself got her married to Zayd to fulfil another rule of Islamic legislation. In Islam, free man can marry a slave woman and a free woman can marry a slave man. Although it was against cultural norms of that time, Muhammad himself married slave women to set an examole for Muslims. He offered marriage of Zainab (her cousin and belonging to noblest clan in Makkah) to a freed slave to abolish the pagan custom of dscrimination between slave and free man. But due to some reason, it was not a happy marriage and despite Prophet's advice, Zayd divorced her. Zainab who agreed for this marriage on advice of Muhammad, was now deeply grieved on break up. the most suitable compensation was that Muhammad married himself to her. it raised her social status, becoming wife of the Prophet and chief of Muslim state. She remained very happy in her life and boasted in front of other wives that she was given in marriage to the Prophet by God.

Many early Muslims dismissed it. Especially Hanafis dismissed it.
In the same Interview min 58, the Professor also says the earliest sources where Christian. John of Damascus, who categorically stated Muhammad pbuh had a Friend or comrade who wanted to divorce his wife and Muhammad pbuh told him not to (hence the rebuke). Then the verse in Tahlil was introduced that after divorce a man can’t return to his wife until she is remarried and divorced again. This was at the time used to protect women as men used divorce as a way of control.

No attestation is found in the Quran, even in the least, of the tradition-based fictitious story of such a marriage. Islam does not recognise the adoption of male child. The marriage with Zaynab was meant precisely to nullify the practice of adopting male child - not for the reasons these propagandist “scholars”are trying to insinuate in excruciatingly FAKE details.
(33:4) Allah has not made for any man two hearts in his (one) body: nor has He made your wives whom ye divorce by Zihar your mothers: NOR HAS HE MADE YOUR ADOPTED SONS YOUR SONS. Such is (only) your (manner of) speech by your mouths. But Allah tells (you) the Truth, and He shows the (right) Way.
(33:5) Call them after their true fathers; that is more equitable in the sight of God. If you know not who their fathers were, then they are your brothers in religion, and your clients. There is no fault in you if you make mistakes, but only in what your hearts premeditate. God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate.
(33:6) The Prophet is nearer to the believers than their selves; his wives are their mothers. Those who are bound by blood have the better claim in the ordinance of Allah to inheritance, than the believers and the emigrants; nevertheless you should act towards your friends honourably; that stands inscribed in the Book.
Otherwise the marital laws remains the same in case of real sons
(4:23) Forbidden unto you are……….. the wives of your sons who (spring) from your own loins…..
