She wouldn't try it unless she knew homelander wouldn't retaliate, if she failed such a stunt and homelander knew she would be screwed. So my guess is that Homelander asked her to try it out on him, as a way to remind her who's in charge. Homelander was embarassed when she outshined him in episode 6, so it would only make sense he would feel this way.

I still don't get why Homelander is not only aging, but seems to be aging more quickly. Sage pointed out in a previous episode that he's getting his hair dyed much more often than he did not so long ago. So is it possible that Vaught created him with a shorter lifespan because they knew how powerful he'd be and they didn't want him living too long? Also, why is he aging, but Soldier Boy doesn't?
There are theories for example the Compound V they gave to Soldier Boy was purer and also had an Anti-Aging feature but for Homelander they tried to give him less pure and of course without an Anti-Aging feature.
Stress.
Extreme stress causes him to age fast.
Remember, he might be invincible, but he still has pseudo-human physiology.
He is just an “invincible” (very very durable) guy.
Since he can experience emotions, like love, and sadness, and rage and so on, it means that his INNATE biology is intact. He has brain chemistry, cocktail of dopamine and seratonin, etc, which allows him to have emotion in the first place.
Likewise, his body can produce pheromones and other bio-components, including cortisol.
Stress reduces the lifespan of cells, because that hormone is bad in large quantities.
Homelander’s own body is wearing itself out, essentially. I would not be surprised if he will get bald even, since he is already losing hair.
And since stress is a part of his super-physiology, that does not register as “damage”. His body perceives it as a normal change.
Since he can AGE, his body considers aging as a normal thing. Likewise, if he has a meltdown, his body also registers that and changes in internal bio-chemistry as innate processes.
Since his body is not invincible to aging, and he experiences emotion, he is not invincible to accelerated aging either.

I’m the same way vought created homelander need for motherly love to keep control over him, making him have a normal, or even shorter lifespan than a human could also be a contingency.
Also the Russians put SB in cryogenic sleep between wake-ups for experiments. So even if he didn’t have a prolonged lifespan, that much cryo-sleep would slow down his metabolism massively.

In the comics, Homelander is tossing around President Neuman’s head. The pieces might be different, but I’m guessing the result will be the same. Neuman dies (would be interesting if her attempt to pop Homelander actually cause her own head to explode for example), leaving no one left but Homelander to take over.

I think homelander planned on throwing Neuman under the bus the whole time. It’s why he wanted her to reveal herself as a supe. So they’d she’s a supervillain and homelander would swoop in, kill her and become the new leader.
