0:31 Backseat the gate
0:50 Remove packing bolts and nuts
1:10 Slide the packing gland up the stem
1:18 Remove all old packing
1:35 Remove packing from shipping tube
1:44 Open each piece of packing
1:50 Insert the new packing
2:13 Replace packing bolts
2:18 Open the valve halfway
2:21 Tighten the nuts evenly
2:30 Exercise the gate valve

I’ve done a lot of valves and never has backseating worked idk what I’m doing wrong. Or shitty junked up valves

Ryan, yes in order to backseat the valve you need to open it completely.

So you can do this while valve is live?

Yes, as long as it is just the packing that is leaking, you can backseat the valve and re-pack it while it is live.

@@AmericanBackflowProducts what if it’s leaking while backseated and the leak continues to increase while loosening the packing nuts?

If the valve continues to leak you will need to find an upstream shutoff or turn the water off at the meter in order to replace the packing. @@bluelude2001

@@dlchill actually repacked 2- 10 inch OSY valves this week and did them live. Opened them up fully and nothing sprayed out. Mueller valves.

Great to hear. Typically, fully opening will help backseat the valve so you can swap out the packing.@@bluelude2001
