When I started to work for Caltrans in Santa Cruz back in 68, the other yard up on the hill had one of these trucks.
Dang near a copy. 7 yrs later I transferred to that yard and started driving it, then around 81 we got 2 new trucks.
As I remember our engine was the green color as all Detroits are, but at some time it sucked a valve and that may be when the engine was swapped out.
On ours, the Air Cleaner sat on the fender sideways, had a cut out on the fender so it sat lower, and a cut out in the
hood side to fit over the housing.
We also had a bench seat, and was an auto trans.
It was a sander truck, with the unit bolted to the rear of the truck.
Had a Bitch tank on the right side for doing Asphalt work.
It was a haul truck for everything, winters hauling slide material, summers Asphalt and Base Rock.
We had a Miller two axle with duals tilt bed trailer to haul equipment, with Air Brakes.
    loved that old truck.
I use to keep her waxed and the stack painted silver, she looked pretty good.
I have been a Cornbinder guy since 66 when I got out of the Navy when I had a 64 C1000, 266 V8 and 3 on the tree till it kept popping out on 2nd and one day I shoved that sucker back in and bent the lever straight up.
Dropped her off at International and had a new truck 4-spd installed.
Had the 7ft bed and Step Side. Painted it light green along with my Horse trailer, was a good looking rig.
    Wish I had kept her.
    I have a 67 1500B 1 1/2 ton I bought back in 72 and still have her. 4 spd with a 3 spd brownie.

A good Detroit mechanic can adjust the rack to make that 6v53 pull like a Mack on the low end. These engines can live a long time

I have a 1964 Loadstar 1800 with Perkins 6.354 turbo diesel rated at 152hp (gross) on the door tag.
It has full air brakes and hydraulic ram power steering.
5 speed IH transmission with 2 speed 18k Eaton rear.
25,500 gvw; regular drivers license in my state.
Has a neat vintage EGT / boost gauge on the dash.
Seems to have every available option for that year.
Also has a vintage SW (Stewart-Warner) gauge set, and they still work.
Air pressure, water temperature, oil pressure, battery voltage, oil temperature, and air cleaner vacuum / restriction.
Both batteries and all the tires appear new.
I have never seen another Perkins Loadstar.
All the others around here are gas-powered; especially when that old.
When I first opened the hood, I was in shock at what was in there.
First I thought it was a farmer conversion with an engine from some old equipment like a combine.
But it was done too good and no way they would bother doing the air brakes, exactly like factory, on an old farm truck conversion.
Truck was not advertised in auction ad and it occured day after Thanksgiving holiday.
Hardly nobody bid on it, won it super cheap; was bidding against the scrap man.
I just held my hand up constantly and stared at the junkman.
He looked at me and knew I was going to buy it or make him overpay.
He would have destroyed it hauling scrap, until it needed any repair or maintenance and then junked it too.
I don't think anyone knew it was a diesel, until I immediately paid for it and drove it away.
No diesel badging on the body.
The cloud of smoke at start up, while auction was still going on, let everyone know.
Truck is in great shape and fun to drive around.
Everything still works, all lights, heater, and windshield wipers.
Reminds me of an early Cummins 5.9; same size, hp, and arrangement.
It is a dry sleeve engine; but hopefully, I never need to rebuild it.
I would like to replace ALL the gaskets though, getting old.
Head gasket looks fairly easy to replace and can inspect / replace wore fuel line or turbo components at same time.
I'm adding a 5.9 grid heater to help cold starts since the grid heaters are so unbelievably cheap online.
That will save the batteries and starter motor from wear with faster cold starts.
It already has a block heater.
The truck spent its life hauling grain once a year, from the fields to the storage silo's and stored in a dry wooden barn rest of the year. That's why it's rust free and frame looks new still.
Somebody bothered to show it some love, but I don't know how it ended up unadvertised in a farm consignment sale; maybe the original owner died.
IH offered the 354 Perkins because of the Canadian, Australian, Indian and Great Britain markets.
They derated it to 132 (net) in brochures; I don't think they wanted to sell the Perkins engine, cost too much profit margin for IH.
But IH did want to offer at least one diesel and not from a direct competitor (gm).
IH wanted to offer something for high altitude use (turbo) and operations that use diesel fuel only; like a trucking company yard spotter or military base use.
The Perkins 6.354 turbo barely fits in the Loadstar engine bay, and it took special cutouts in the firewall; turbo is nearly hitting firewall.
At least it's easy to reach everything with the butterfly hood and a straight six. I think I could do an in-frame rebuild; but hope I never have to, unless I have racked up thousands of hours and wore it out from use.
Then I would gladly in-frame rebuild it.
The foreign markets love that engine; used in Massey Ferguson tractors, combines, fishing trawlers, and medium trucks.
I would like to remove the pto hydraulic dump grain bed and add military axles, rear steering, 52" tires, divorced transfercase, and a Holmes 600 twin boom + pto winches, mechanical wrecker body that I already found.
Truck would be a great offroad wrecker and give it a new way to earn its keep doing difficult recoveries in remote locations like Moab.
That's how it survived this long; and the dry air there would help it survive long enough to actually need a rebuild someday.
Wooden barns are great for storing vehicles; less moisture.
The barns will all be be gone someday; get torn down around here constantly; so the days of "barn finds" will be ending....I am getting everything I can now. Small farms are being bought up by factory farms; the small farmer auctions off his equipment and whatever has been in the barns for decades; might be why my Loadstar showed up at that auction.
My lifted K30 with Holmes 500, will be its work partner.

I found the original manifold preheater on ebay for cheap. I am re-installing that instead of converting to the square cummins heater. My guess is they had trouble finding a replacement decades ago, and now we have the internet to find parts. Found injector pump rebuild kits and injectors in foreign markets. Australia, UK, India, China, etc.

    • @Wingnut353
      @Wingnut353 Před 9 měsíci +8

yeah except.. everybody said that, and everybody still says it lol. It's not really true though it has good power density, and can go up to 300HP, or 350HP in military applications where you don't care if it blows up early in it's service life. It's 160hp stock, 200hp with larger injectors, 230-250hp with a turbo, and you only get to 350 with DDEC and lots of turbo.

Heil has been around for a long time and more known for garbage truck bodies. They are owned by Dover's Enviromental Solutions Group. Built their fist garbage truck bodies in the 1900s and by the 1930s they were being used in 100s of cities across the US. I assume for a awhile they made dump boxes but now just build garbage collection bodies.

Crappy engine and transmission. Those detroits are the absolute worst for work. Slow. No power. No torque. I’d rather cut off my toe than drive any Detroit even modern Detroits. I’d run that truck right into the scrappers and say thank you for getting this piece of crap out of my life

Yip for the pressure washer. Get some pool noodles at the dollar store and tape them on tightly. Helps stop hand cramps.
