    In those days buyers were likely more astute with their money as I recall in the 50s and 60s my late mater using several different grocery sellers as one of them might be cheaper on tomatos, another one on carrots etc. And many working class folk grew their own as much as possible. (During WWII my late grandpater maintained his large garden and several allotments in order to feed his seven children). But my sharpest memory of Ilkeston market goes back to being a child in the 1950s - a time when most things (bar houses) - were relatively far more expensive. I pointed out to my parents that shoes were being offered by a stallholder for only five shillings (25 pence) a pair. My pater genuinely replied ' We don't want those as they are made from carboard.' Ah, the good ol' days.
