I initially read English Classics, such as Dickens, Jane Austen, to learn English. I have read a lot, but only for the purpose of being able to decipher codes, meaning to learn Language, which means I have already easily forgotten after reading, despite I have read more than 25 of them.

That's why I usually take notes when I'm reading--I forget, too! But when I reread my notes, they help me recall what I've read. If you go back and read one book "for pleasure" rather than for language acquisition, it might be interesting to see whether you'd absorb more of the story.
