I'm Spanish and I can confirm we do that all the time. I think for most of us we think that praising ourselves is just kind of narcissistic so in order to avoid people thinking that, we use sarcasm. Also hen making fun of ourselves we also state that we are confident and strong enough to net be let down by any negative comment. Hope that makes sense
