Happy Lunar New Year 2024! 新年快乐!
In this video, my family and I are burning joss paper ("spirit money"), which is a traditional Chinese-Taoist practice done during special holidays. The belief is that if you burn joss paper and make offerings to your ancestors, the deceased will receive them and benefit from a prosperous afterlife. This tradition dates back nearly 2,500 years.
You'll see a few different kinds being burned: traditional joss, hell bank notes and paper objects.
Traditional joss is square or rectangular with a thin piece of square foil glued to the center or it may be endorsed with a red ink seal. The color of the paper is white, white color representing mourning, the square foil normally has a golden or silver metal shade and hence representing money. The joss paper can be folded in half, or folded into a shape of a gold ingot before being burned.
Much like the traditional gold and silver paper, the bank notes are a modernized version of joss paper and serve as the official currency for the afterlife. Additionally, paper and papier-mâché objects are also burnt as presents materializing in the afterlife. Examples include clothing, jewelry, cell phones, cars, lavish models of paper villas, medicine, fancy food and liquors, passports, flight tickets, credit cards, etc.
This is always a bittersweet tradition, remembering those lost but also celebrating with them in a way. I hope you enjoy this piece of our Lunar New Year celebration. Happy Year of the Dragon!
