If you get killed like everything else you will lose it. If you don't a pristine skeleton has 3 uses.
do you need to unlock anything to be able to barter the skeleton keys?
To unlock the barter receipt for skeleton keys, you have to kill the Velken boss in building 21 once. Not the easiest thing to do, but hope that helps.
