The history of skateboarding is actually so beautiful
People often seem to forget the roots and origin of skateboarding... This was a sick piece!
People don't forget, it's the new age that doesn't know
I moved there from Iowa. I had nothing even close to this park. I knew of it from the Tony Hawk games and also from the locals. I literally teared up when I pulled into the parking lot. I could just feel history when I pulled in, like no other Iowa kid has seen this. It was so beautiful, I still tear up to this day lol. The Ramos family is so nice and everything they do is awesome. Thank you Kona and to everyone that keeps it running.
I love this park. I skated it after I shattered my wrist and everyone was worried about me skateboarding so I snuck off to Florida and rode all over town till I found Kona and then next day skated the hell out of that place. This is after building the metal park. I love this place. It reminds me of the old Pink Panther Skatepark.
The story about the grandparents almost made me cry...
Pipeline...gone. Del Mar ... gone. Kona still stands like the Stonehenge of Skateboarding
The ride channel should have a day a week dedicated to vintage rodney mullen clips
First skatepark I ever skated! Skated there from 1984-86 before moving. I got to meet a few pros during that time. Mike McGill, Tony Hawk, Fred Smith & numerous others! Such a special time for me!
I was just at Kona yesterday. It's always fun whenever I get the opportunity to go out there, I always learn something new. It's just a really awesome well-rounded park where everyone can go and skate how they want and have fun with it.
This is absolutely LEGEND ive never seen Rodney that small!!!
pretty cool to see the origins of longboarding and skateboarding as well as how blading help kept kona alive today
Lived in Jacksonville my whole life and live literally 5 minutes from this epic skatepark. It's sad to see it today in such bad shape, they don't sell boards or equipment & it's always in disrepair and dead.
that’s so sad. why is that? it’s has loads of fun things to skate. has skating died in florida, or are they all street skating?
@@skaterdude14b I lived 20 min from Kona. The owner, from what I know, just neglected the park due to money problems I think. The street section is garbage now. Sucks... Skating is not dead in Florida though, you can find plenty of great skateparks around Jax.
I love that my local park is kona if you haven't been yet come skate there is always good times waiting
Kona Jacksonville fl I skated this park almost every weekend.. I saw the entire bones brigade there.. Good times back in the 80s- early 90s.. Thrashers in Ocala, fl was another park we quite frequented having grown up in Gainesville..
I've left so many square feet of skin on that crete... Mrs. Ramos was my Mom away from Mom for many a summer in the 80's. I still donate blood there on the regs too!
ErgoCogita I remember Mrs Ramos from THPS4 😂
This may be the coolest video I've ever watched. Thank you
"He became...Rodney Mullen".....statement of the century.
I am an inline skater but always respected skateboarders...we are all family
No we aren't fruit booters suuuuuuuck
FunkyDoolittle we must join together against scooters
Stedman Gram no. Scooter kids suck. We have to team together to take down a bigger evil
KONA Skatepark is Great memories! Some of the Best Contests and Coolest People. I always looked forward to going!
holy moley pls keep this documentary vids coming and thx for making this one
Carlsbad definitely should be paid homage to since we just recently saw it's passing on come about.
It's a legendary spot here in San Diego and such a momentous part of skateboarding history.
reminds me of THPS4

Loved Kona on that game!
Kona has been a major part of my past. I can still remember skating the vert ramp and scarring the birds off of their wire.
Thats why i love skateboarding as a sport, its not just a hobby, or an activity, its got such a history, like, skateboarding was the icon of those times, and to see now how its progressed, its just so amazing to be part of such a large skateboarding history and community ya know. im all emotional, get me some kleenex.
I was told its a phase im going through...😂. A phase called life
wow that halfpipe at 2:53 is massive!
Really opens your eyes on skateboarding and what a influence it brought on.
Thanks for the posts! I skated here a lot in the 80's and early 90's. I loved to go at night when the park was virtually empty and a lot cooler. A lot of my skin and blood ended up on that concrete, but it was all worth it. The old blue u-pipe was my favorite ramp there. You had to get used to the quicker transition from one side to the next, but after you got that, it was a ton o' fun. It was hard for me to leave it to skate the rest of the park, but I had to "get my money's worth". You could haul ass on the snake run and carve out some fun lines! The last time I was there, my friend broke his leg in the bowl, and I had to carry him out from the bottom and to the hospital. We had just paid for another hour too!
Mental place I love it. Not heard Bio used for a few decades either.
ive lived in jax for years and been to kona a couple times. i always ate it at the bowl from the time i started skateing around thirteen to today i still fuck up atleast once in the bowl. almost twenty years old and that park is some of the most fun i can have
Best days of skateboarding, skater 4 ever, awesome, thanks for the video
Looking forward to checking it out in 4 days. Absolutely love the history of skateboarding. It is a young history and it is awesome.
I feel very fortunate to have spent the years I did at Kona and to have been allowed to roll around in my pathetic way with the real locals. From the perspective of 30 years, it's cool to have been on the periphery of something special like this.
I got chill when I found out that Rodney Mullen and mike McGill and tony Alva skated there because I literally just skated that park today, 50 years later
CASkateparks should add a street section. It's such an influential park, that it needs to be both modern and classic.
this video got me so emotional
My husband worked there in 1988. I remember driving him to work in my 1970 convertible Karmen Ghia!
Marty Ramos rules. Thanks to the Ramos family for their passion project for forty-three years (so far)!
I'm from Massachusetts and I'm heading to Kona in a few weeks. Psyched!!
The first time when I went there, it was so cool walking outside
This makes me wish my parents were into skateboarding
Great show guys.
that drop in was fucking gnarly
Rodney forever king
agreed
The Hendrix of skateboarding
@@FabioGnecco true this...
More documentaries like this please!!
It makes me want to actually ride a skateboard. Kona was one of the first parks I ever skated. Never was much into video games.
We bladers helped the boarders come back in the 90's, and now the boarders have left the bladers in their dust, thanks.
its good to see my home park on youtube
I went to Kona in 1984 and it was huge park. I saw a kid just ripping and asked somebody his name, they said Buck. He had a bald head and ever since then till this day I have referred to bald guys as a "Bald Buck". I had no idea who he was or anything till watching this video now in 2013. Wow.....thats freaky. Cool that his is still skating.
Just amazing
just beautiful

I want meet talk Rodney Mullen .
Love this.
I hope i get to skate there in the near future.
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!
I've skateboarded from the early 1980's through the late 1990's, I skated with Lynn Cooper and Russ Howell and competed against some of the best and never heard of Buck Smith until watching this video. Perhaps because all the guys I skated and competed with are on the west coast.
I love this park... Go almost every Sunday.
good old times
I'm proud to live in Jacksonville for this reason only
Wow the first drop in, now thats legendary
So cool
Kona Locals only! I wonder how the vibe was up there?
KONA needs to be on every skater's bucket list... I'm only a state away and am going in June for my 2nd time... and I hope to go even more frequently...
Great Stuff
I rode Kona back in the day and it reminds me of the Mall Wall skateboard park in Springfield Virginia.... Mixed with Barney's concrete curl down in North Carolina in Nags Head.... Those were the days....skateboarding was developing and getting faster unlike today how it is actually getting slower....there was an aspect of skateboarding USA which was a skateboard park in Manassas Virginia... Bonnie and I rode this park religiously in Manassas Virginia.... Her brother Blaize was just a youngster...
I love like 3 hours away from kona, yet I haven't been but I can't wait till I do go! :)
sick!!
So awesome yeaaaaahhhh!!!!
Man i love the Skate today but fuck this is Old Skool the best thk for upload this magnificent vid bro

She: Are you high?!? Me: No. I'm watching 70's Skateboarding.
you should do one for buena vista pool in santa cruz, CA
I still have a Buck Smith wizard deck. Great times.
I love that park I love next to it it has the best.vibe
1 clip of rodney mullen
lol
I've been to Kona once. The place is fucking rad!
+Gavin Looks like a fun place...plus, a lot if history too.
2:53 the first mega quarterpipe
i was driving on my home from florida and my parents suprized me with going to this park and when i saw it like freaked out like no joke..
I just started skateboarding, and i think thing like this just stimulate my generation too do something else then gaming and that stuff.
Why not both?
That park raised us! They used to have to put Coke cola on the ramp with a mop and mop it so it wouldn't be slippery!
Since you clearly didn't read what he said properly, I'll repeat it a bit better for you.
"Man I love skateboarding these days, but old school is the best. Thank you for uploading this magnificent video."
We used to have a great 10ft vert in my town, but the government tore it down after 20yrs...
History!
ive allways wanted to go to kona
you should do one for derby in santa cruz california
derby was the fuckin spot! all through the 90s we'd have over 50 to 100 people meeting up before going to a show. old school hip hop like gangstar guru, krs one, digable planets. or punk shows lag wagon, nofx, pennywise, good riddens, and yes black flag. lol smoking bamer weed, dropping lsd when it was 2 bucks a dose.lmao shrooms, and lots of mickey's grenades. more chick's than dudes, and massive mash pits. the skate sessions before the shows with all the chick's watching from school was rad as fuck to show out. only skate park anywhere on central coast California at that time. some time later was the skate station in sand city but that's another story. DERBY PARK SANTA CRUZ CALI! HE'LL YEA
please do lansdowne next!
Sorry. It's just... I'm happy, 'cause I freakin' love Kona. Gotta go there some day.
More kona please!
woah
