A playthrough of D.W. the Picky Eater, also released as Arthur's Adventures with D.W. (this playthrough used the former), and the last Living Books game ever released. This game was made without Brøderbund - instead, it was developed by Media Station, with the Living Books name slapped onto it. It really shows. Horribly. It's a very mediocre game, and pretty much forgot everything that made Living Books games so great to begin with. It's incredibly dull, there's too few click spots on each page, the game did a terrible job of trying to bring the story to life (i.e. mediocre animation), it's not faithful to any of the older games, and basically feels like a quickly thrown together game with the Living Books name plastered on it. Oh, let's not forget D.W.'s voice, either. If you came in expecting a good game, you will be disappointed, because, quite honestly, this isn't a worthy addition to the series. It actually makes me glad they re-released it without the Living Books name, because it doesn't deserve to have that kind of label.
Anyway, this is half of the game. This will only be two parts long. As mediocre as the game is, enjoy the video anyway.
Edit: I think I know the whole story (no pun intended) as to why this game turned out the way it did, and how Living Books got cancelled. This was made shortly after The Learning Company bought out Brøderbund, and only used the Brøderbund name for marketing purposes. When they did this, they got rid of about 500 Brøderbund employees, which explains why almost none of the original Living Books team is listed in the credits. I imagine TLC wanted to continue the success of Living Books now that the whole team was gone, which I'd say is fine. But outsourcing it to Media Station isn't the right way to do it, considering they were known for making inferior clones. Something tells me the game either didn't sell well (which would explain why it has very few views in relation to all the other Arthur videos on this account) or they just weren't satisfied with the end product, or felt it wasn't a series worth continuing. They did try though, and it's pretty sad the Living Books series had to fold this way. The upcoming iOS ports do show some promise though. There are talks about continuing the series once those are finished. Right now it's got a long way to go, but it's a possibility.
D.W. the Picky Eater is (C) 1998 Living Books/Wanderful Storybooks and (C) 1995 Marc Brown. - Hry
I used to play this game all the time when I was a kid. D.W. was always my favorite character from the Arthur TV series.
Me, too! I especially love the part at 11:04. D.W. doesn't like spinach, her mother was so embarrassed, her father said to D.W. "No more restaurants for you." That's hilarious!
I like all the activities 😜🙂😉
In both the book version and "Living Books" CD rom adaptation, it was David Read who said to D.W that there would be no more restaurants for her. But in the cartoon, it was Jane Reed who said to D.W she would have no more restaurants. Jane Read went like in the TV cartoon, "No more restaurants for you young lady! No more until you learn to behave and eat what is placed in front of you! Now go to your room!".
She sounds mean!
Not mean. DW punched her salad and it exploded all over the waiter, and everyone was staring at them.
11:05. Dora Winifred read: I HATE SPINACH!! 𗁍🥬
Mom: I'm so embarrassed.𗁒
Dad: No more restaurant for you. 𗀶
I laughed at this! 😆
So funny! 🤣 😆 😄 😂
@@francisnguyen6349 It's early to bed for you D.W!
This game, Arthur's Birthday, Arthur's Computer Adventure, and Arthur's Reading Race all made my nostalgia shoot through the roof god for a 23 year old this makes me feel old😩😣😖
I don't think you could have ever measured up to how bad I was. When I was in my earliest years, all I ever ate was cheese bread. Over and over and over. Probably why I love cheese and bread so much nowadays.
Saw the episode version of this book a few times. I was always irritated when she yelled about the spinach and ended up 'tossing' her salad onto the waiter's head. Hating spinach or not, that was overdoing it (I know she's only three, but still...).
Though she wasn't entirely at fault, since I also always wondered why her parents didn't just order her a salad that only had things she did like in. After all it's better to spend money on food you know your child will eat then spend money on food you want your child to eat even though they never will. Going with the second option just wastes food.
Jane and David Read have some explaining to do…
This take me back a more easier time in life
Andrea you rember this game

“Hey! Close the door!” 7:05
“Are you kidding me? We’re baking it in here!” 7:09
“That’s it! No cinnamon buns for you!” 7:15
Creep! 7:42
That man did not say "Creep!" Or did he?
Media Station also did a few interactive storybooks in tandem with Disney Interactive Studios such as Winnie the Pooh & the Honey Tree, Pocahontas, 101 Dalmatians and Mulan.
Yep. In fact, as one commenter mentioned below, this is very much like one of those games, and some of the music wouldn't be too out-of-place in that Winnie the Pooh game!
Media Station was recruited by Activision a year later after their last Living Books title, D.W. the Picky Eater by Marc Brown, was released for 32-bit computers
This is way different than the other Living Books games I grew up with
I know right. Media station was known for Disney interactive story books
9:21 I was trying to figure out why Arthur was so tall, and why David aka Dad shrank.
I guess that's why The Learning Company decided that Media Station should develop this title.
This was fun, but missing out a lot of features what made it a living book.
Jesus Christ! They managed to make DW ten times more annoying than she was on the show! That's a pretty big accomplishment.
Quick like a bunny? I wonder how Buster would feel about that saying?
One of my sister's friends was a picky eater...whenever we went to Arby's...and ordered the roast beef sandwiches (classic, Beef & Cheddar), she would only eat the roast beef and not the bun. (Of course, I was one that hated bread when I was growing up, and carrots and tofu), but then again...I got over those.
I can see why. Looking back on it, I thought it was good and still do. The only thing that annoys me is the spaceship thing and that they skipped a few pages.
At least, the paper airplane was on every single page in Arthur’s Teacher Trouble!
I love spaghetti and sauce and so does DW but she hates sauce on hers.
Is that so? I also like to have sauce on my spaghetti sometimes. Usually, I'm a butter and cheese person, because I like the flavor of salted butter very much. 🤣
omg I played this when i was a kid! so many memories--thanks for the upload!
I remember playing these "Living Book" games in the first and second grade on the libary computers.
Personally, I think spaghetti would taste yucchy without the tomato sauce, but if D.W. thinks the opposite, that's fine.
I like butter on my bread. And cheese on my spaghetti (plus tomato sauce, of course).
are you serious? arE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?! NO MAN SHOULD HAVE TO EAT SPAGHETTI WITHOUT SAUCE. THSTS NOT EVEN SPAGHETTI. IT'S JUST NOODLES. NOT EVEN RAMEN. DW EATS INSTANT NOODLES WITHOUT THE FLAVOR PACKET. THIS IS SIN. FUCK YOU DW. YOU SHALL GO TO HELL AND FALL INTO A POOL OF BLOOD, BUT ITS ACTUALLY TOMATO SAUCE. YOU MAKE ME SICK. DW IS A DISGRACE. FUCK HER.
Oh man such nostalgia. I remember that damn UFO
I'm more worried about how much his eyes are hurting. Surely he has to blink SOMETIME...
Why am I just now responding to this?
Anyway, I know D.W. has had male voice actors in the TV series. My point is, though, that this ISN'T the TV series. She's never once had a male voice actor in the Living Books games.
I think there were more than about three or four click points on every page.
D.W just punched her salad and it exploded… all over the waiter and everyone was staring at us.
They were not! Everyone’s making a such a really big deal!
It's no wonder that this was the last "Living" Book.
Oh my god my nostalgia is just pouring out of my eyes.
The main menu of this looks unique!
i didnt have this game back in the 90's. I only had Arthur's teacher trouble, The bernstein bears get in a fight, the tortoise and the hare and harry and the haunted house
Look, DW, I know you hate spinach, but you have to try new foods.
Just like Guy Am I (aka Joey, Grouchy Guy, Sam’s Friend) from Dr. Seuss kept on saying “I do not like green eggs and ham.” but then he liked it eventually.
D.W.: I don't eat anything with eyes, or pickles tomatoes, mushrooms, eggplant, pineapple, parsnips, and cauliflower. Well...and maybe a few other things. I would never eat a liver in a million years, and more than anything else in the whole world, I hate spinach!
I love playing this game a lot as a kid!
OMG PERCYANDDUCKFAN94 I LOVE YOU AND YOUR DEVIANTART ACCOUNT!!!!!
Me too.
PercyandDuckfan94 I remember that game at kindergarten
Me three
PercyandDuckfan94 I actually remember this game as aloud as well looking back it aged poorly but It’s still fun to look back at this game
The episode of DW The Picky Eater on the Arthur TV show was a little bit different. There was also a storyline with Arthur's friends trying to help. None of Arthur's friends appeared in the book version!
I always remembered playing this but I could never remember what it was called!
I remember when I had this game whenever I tried running it on windows xp it would always crash with a media player error message.
Meet the classic version of DW The Picky Eater
Mrs. Cross is pretty, because she dresses nicely when she babysits children in Elwood City. I used to get in trouble when I was D.W.'s age which was due to special needs that I really WON'T tell you about in the comment boards, because it's a violation of Internet etiquette. I couldn't help it back then before self-control developed during my childhood. 👍🏻 if you strongly agree with my comment.
I wanna try the Hawaiian shrimp, because it looks so delicious!
plain speghetti is so boring, I love it with the sauce and cheese on top too :)
It's common practice to change things up when adapting a book into a TV episode or a movie. They do it because there's not too much point in seeing the movie/episode if you've already read the book.
11:05 I hate spinach!
Is D.W. hate spinach with a rubbery motion?
+Christen Faust Yes. I love spinach. Really?
@@susansilk-koenigsberg3368 I hate spinach, too!
Christen Faust "No more restaurants for you!"
@@CandiTheWildPig It's early to bed for you, D.W.
Well, it sounds like a Living Book to me.
I once saw this at an online store seven years ago and wanted to buy it. However, I didn't have a credit/debit card back then. But after I saw this, I was lucky I didn't buy it.
I have the say, the limited animation (reusing same animation for different clicking locations) and terrible voice acting ("I hate spinach") basically made this one such a failure.
Yes.
@JaDangerz The fact that Media Station made this instead of Broderbund probably justifies that. Oh, and it's mediocre.
Why is D.W. saying "I Hate Spinach" with a rubbery motion?
Because, she stay home and eat carrots.
In the “MTN Gang”, Wendy would say “I hate oxtails.”
11:02 Yzma Quest
OMG I've played this once when I was a kid. aaaaaaahhhh!!!! It brings back the memories
@TheMickiRae Honestly, if you actually watched this video, you'd realize the game isn't very much up to the standards of the other LB games.
Anyway, I'm sure they had their reasons. Maybe the got tired of the concept, or they wanted to move on to bigger and better things.
Oh, OK. Kinda like LJN (Don't know if you are into video games) making really bad X-men games for the NES just to rest on the marvel franchise, but not carry the torch, except it's the company that sucked versus the franchise.
Cookie Jar folded due to serious legal and financial scandals, declared bankruptcy, and was then bought up by DHX Media October '12.
YES, It's a shame a good animator of this AWESOME show went up in flames...
Just when I thought this couldn't be more lazily done...
I actually just took a look at the audience retention and there's a huge spike on that part. Lolz.
DW hates spinach. Me too.
So do I.
Why would they cancel it?
was this really the Last Living Book computer game ever released until now?
Based of The Story D.W. The Picky Eater by Marc Brown and Steven Spielberg
Executive Producer Stephen Hillenburg
"This Salad has Spinach in It"
"Just Try it"
"She's Gonna Have a Tantrum"
"Please Try it"
"I Hate Spinach!"
"I'm So Embarrassed"
"No more Restaurants for You"
"It's Early to Bed for You, D.W."
Arthur: So much for dinner.
In all fairness, a lot of the games preceded the show, so they had few standards to work off. And even then, these are based off the books, not the show. Still doesn't excuse their generic version of Pal.
Yeah, you're not very far off on that connection. It's near almost the same situation.
What website?
I actually liked this one. Ironically, it's the only one I have left.
what about arthurs wild adventure
Did you know that I have this book at home
Yes.
+Diddy Kong Yes.
I remember playing this as a kid...
4:27
Since when does the Read house have a fancy house
LOL
Don't worry D.W I'm a picky eater too but you must eat your vegetables though
If she's not allowed to have what she wants, then I hate her the most for being way too manipulated in the books and that mandatory cartoon! #punchintheface
Can you release a version for iPod
it was a game
11:05 I HATE SPINACH!
11:20 I HATE SPINACH!
One of my favorites too!
Bedtime Now March Quick Like a Bunny
3:48 That's one thing D.W. & I agree on
She's almost always had a female actress in the Living Books series.
I swear, the music in the clickpoint animations is giving me Disney Animated Storybook vibes. They were developed by the same company and all, but the little bits of music would NOT sound out of place in their version of Winnie the Pooh. Look for some footage if you want to know what I mean.
I had the 101 Dalmatians one.
My childhood.
I don't trust picky eaters. And besides, spinach is my favorite vegetable. When I was little, I've never tasted spinach before. And then a few years later, my parents cooked spinach with cheese. That was good. And then, at school last year, my teacher made strawberry and spinach salad with poppy seed dressing for a box lunch for the teachers. And she lets me have some. Then suddenly when I tasted it, it was delicious. I thanked my teacher. She was very proud of me. And so were my parents. And from that moment on, I decided to try new foods.
Who cares?
@ARemoteAndRandomName yeah, mediocre is the right word for this game after what I saw
If My Baby Sitter Was Mrs. Cross, and Only Allowed Carrot Sticks For Snack, I Would Say "Hey, I'll Eat What I Like!" "And Not Stupid Carrots!" I'll Just say, "I should be Eating Cake!"
Mrs. Cross hates sweets!
It's Early To Bed For You Dw
No, silly, it's a way of saying "I couldn't have said it better myself."
Why was this the last Living Books game ever released?
moviencartoons3 I have no idea.
Are you going to make more videos after this?
@TheMickiRae That's fine with me, but it doesn't really match the quality of the previous games. The animation is very lacking, the clickables aren't memorable, the minigames are tacked on, and the overall experience leaves a lot to be desired. Most faux-LB games did a better job than this!
Not really. It was made after Broderbund was sold to the Learning Company. The Living Books name is really just on there so they could make cash off a brand name.
Sad, isn't it?

This game gave my computer a BSoD after reading the first page.
I played that game back at Justine’s house.
I played this game all the time omg
Yeah, I know about why the went off, I was being rhetorical. But yeah, I wouldn't have minded so much if the show started on Flash (okay, it's technically Toon Boom, but it's similar and just as lazy), but it should be illegal to go from hand-drawn to Flash. Much as I think the animation is sloppy in this game, at least it has SOME expressiveness (Let's face it, 11:06 is so bad it's good). The new Arthur TV animation is just sloppy and feels like they're using cardboard cut outs.
Yes they were. Wikipedia it.
God dang I remember the last time I use living books is at kindergarten
Go Go Gadget Helicopter Hat. 13:54
2:39-2:44-- Totes adorbs!
Exactly. Just wanted to point that out for those who don't know.
Hey girl, open the walls, play with your dolls....
Oh, what I meant about "this job" is the job of traditional animation for Arthur, not of this game, sorry about that (if that's what you meant).
Gotta love that 500 character limit...
Is this really a Living Book?
Yes.
