    Super great, as usual. Minutes 10:30-12:30 are dense. A bit mindblowing. But you do a great job overall of explaining the device.

      Thanks Dave! It's hard to be efficient in explaining such a complicated device in its entirety without being a little bit info-dense, but I'm glad that you found it interesting and useful nonetheless! Thanks for watching. :)

      @@matttinklermusic For sure! Didn't mean to come off wrong. It's an amazing primer (if not complete one-stop reference) and I feel liike it sythesizes (pun intended) the Ableton manual in such a great way. I'd much rather watch you explain things than RTFM (althought I do believe that is helpful, nay necessary). The test of my learning is the speed at which I can comprehend and keep up. So I'm proud I made it as far without my eyes starting to cross. Glad I found your channel through wonders of the YT algorithm. I look forward to it. Keep it up, please :)

    I love this. Does anyone know how I can put the sounds I gave "extract string" back into a drum rack?

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  Před rokem +1

      Unfortunately there's not a quick way to do this. I actually don't use the 'extract chains' feature very often because of this (and a few other reasons), so I will often just duplicate the track then solo the sounds I want on each of the duplicates.
      If you want to put it back into the original drum rack, you'd have to drag the chain from the new drum rack to the old drum rack, then copy over the MIDI in the clips.
      Thanks for watching! :)

    Hey man, cool video and really accessible for neewbies like me. I've been wanting to get started with some kind of groovebox, but I've been reading that I might as well just use Ableton live, which I alread own. I prefer the feeling of an instrument, so what's a good controller to use with drum rack. I was looking at Push 3, but costs $2k which is rediculous for my needs. Have you tried anything else like the novation controllers?

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
      The Push 3 is an amazing instrument that doesn't really have any comparison when it comes to Ableton Live integration. That said, the novation stuff is great. If you want to be able to sequence stuff on the controller itself, you'll need to look at something like the Launchpad Pro, because the other Launchpad don't have sequencing capabilities. If you just want to be able to record yourself playing a pattern, the normal Launchpad should do just fine. You could then pair this with something like a Launchkey to add some extra hands on controls and a keyboard.
      The other option is to look at getting a second hand Push 2, which is still a fantastic piece of kit! ☺️

    I remember when I used Ableton 10 I could simply drag a drum kit to a cell in session view and it would play exactly like the preview for that drumkit, then I could see all sounds of that drumkit pattern also play in the drum rack and change the drum rack directly in real time as it was playing that drumkit preview pattern. Was I hallucinating? Because I can't seem to do this anymore in Ableton 12. What am I missing?

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  Před 4 měsíci

      You're potentially thinking of importing clip (.alc) files instead of a drum rack preset file (.adg). Clip files contain clip information as well as device information. Importing a device file won't load up a clip with a preview, just the device on the track. :)

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  Před 7 měsíci

      If you mean that there is a delay and reverb audio effect after the simpler, you've probably created a default. You can delete this from the 'Defaults' folder in your User Library under 'Dropping Samples into Drum Rack' or something like that. :)

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Ah, you'll want to load the sample into a simpler or sampler device and not use drum rack for that! Then you can just play the sample at different pitches up and down the keyboard. :)

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  Před měsícem

      Sorry you found this boring! I tried to condense as much info on drum rack as possible into an easy to follow video, and because it's such a deep instrument it just has to get a bit geeky. How would you like to see a video like this structured? :)

    • @johnqpublic4662
      @johnqpublic4662 Před měsícem

      @@matttinklermusic Sorry I lost my temper, and thank you for responding constructively. I am super frustrated with Ableton as an organization. I watch these videos because Live’s documentation sucks. Live 12 comes with a ton of preset drum racks, and none of them explain how they work. When you add the macro controls on the top of the instrument pads on top of an effects bus that has numerous effects in it, some of which are subject to automation, you end up with four or five levels of complexity. It would be extremely useful on the preset drum racks to simply explain what each of the elements does, and how to figure out what’s going on. Almost all of the most important controls are hidden all the time. Ableton doesn’t even tell you how to access the hidden controls. Drum rack in Live 12 is a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma.

    • @matttinklermusic
      @matttinklermusic  Před měsícem +1

      @@johnqpublic4662 No need to apologise!
      I 100% agree with your frustration about the lack of documentation. The fact that the user manual hasn't been updated for Live 12 yet is frankly unacceptable.
      Drum rack can be pretty confusing, especially with the macros on presets!
      Think of macros as just controls that the people who have designed the preset think are useful to be able to tweak. Sometimes they can be quite complicated in terms. of how they're mapped though, so as you say diving into the rack can be very confusing, especially for beginners!
      Because of this I really recommend moving to making your own drum racks and away from the preset instruments, so that you can get comfortable with the structure of the instrument and learn how you can edit the presets.
      If you have any specific questions, I'm happy to try and help! :)

    • @johnqpublic4662
      @johnqpublic4662 Před měsícem

      @@matttinklermusic Thanks for the advice! I tried making my own, but gave up quickly, probably because they weren’t as loud and punchy, because the presets use things like Drum Buss. Basically, you need to be able to reverse engineer the presets to know what to do with your own drum rack!
