- Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, and Vince Clarke were young kids from the small town of Basildon, England before becoming the band known today as Depeche Mode. Their fifteenth studio album, ‘Memento Mori’, reminds listeners that everything ends...but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Ahead of the album's release, Depeche Mode sits down with Zane Lowe to reflect on their journey from kids to music legends. The two share that with the help of Daniel Miller from Mute Records, they were able to become one of the most influential bands to arise from the 80s. They also share that this new album will be supported by a world tour, trekking across 75 countries.

Just as I was thinking that I wish there was more of this interview.
These gentleman are among the most powerful conveyers of human emotion via songcraft. Period.
Beautiful comment. Very well put.
"Hey you're such a pretty boy you're so pretty" Hahahah I'm just jokin' i'm a HUUUUUUAAAGE depeche fan/obsessive
Well put my friend! Such a profound and true statement!
True that!👍🙏
LOL.. yet you weren't around when these guys were starting out. That's as far as you know "College" boy.
Dave is such a self reflecting, classy, articulate gentleman. This band has never fit a mold and you know when you hear a song, it's THEM. You can see here the band is rejuvinated and Martin and Dave have a closer brotherly relationship.
This is the best interview I´ve seen since 1990, deep questions, you can see the guys even surprised and talking out of the box, going out of the script, really enjoyable. This is the kind of interview you expect when they make important announcements.
yup they are incredibly humble and genuine
Exactly! I was always kind of suprised by lack of good deep interviews with them
So very true!
I totally agree with your analysis. Greetings from France. True devoted fan since 1980...introspective interview almost about the creation process. Out of this world
It’s good, but Zane needs to get out of the interviewees way and let them talk. And stop trying to lead them with his view of what their experience was.
I watched lots of their interviews and even when they were very young they were humble and gentle, unlike many other musicians of their ranking. They don’t try to preach, or try to talk some messianic nonsense like they are all that… they don’t pose, they don’t have this aura of self importance and fame… just normal polite, respectful people who are grateful for their success.
Agreed. Out of all the huge bands I think they’re the most genuine people, especially Martin and Andy, god rest his soul
Yes they are more gentleman like than the even the biggest gentlemen. Always polite and nice.
One of my favorite things about DM lyrics is that the lyrics to a song can mean different things to you depending on where you are in your life; teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s.
And what about the poor 60s😢
@Brody oops, sry. I was talking about my personal experience, and I haven't reached the 60s yet. 😀🤣
Totally agree. Listening when I was in my teens to now in my 40's. Still rekindles the magic but I hear new meaning in their songs. So happy they are touring again.
It’s ubiquitous brilliance.
Totally agree. And that's precisely what their name means, right? Some or of "modern telegram" (Depeche Mode) to the people of the world.
As a fan of Depeche Mode since Speak & Spell in 1981, can I just give a big shoutout to Zane Lowe for being so enthusiastic, patient, and actvely listening during this interview and telling the right stories and asking the right questions? The whole atmosphere of this conversation was just incredible.
I haven't seen such PROFESSIONAL interview with them in AGES. Intelligent, rich, intelectual, fun, exciting. All those "journalists" asking them dumb questions at the tour announcement events should take note, or actually plenty of notes. Great work, Zane!
10000000 times better than the woman who did the press conference couple months ago 😅
@@patobantan420 Lol I still don't have a clue who that lady is 😂😁
@Jeshkam she said mentioned during the presser, she's a long time friend. I also have zero clue
@@patobantan420 I guess she must be their spiritual advisor, sort of like Zelda from Poltergeist. 😎
At last an interview they deserve...with introspective questions, the créative process. Abyssal but essential questions. DM at their best 😊
You can tell that Dave and Mart have gotten a lot closer. They seem to really enjoy each others company. Excited for this upcoming tour and album.
Crazy how death brings people together. This will be the first album that Martin and Dave wrote a song together.
@@johnsparkstwo They wrote a song together on Delta Machine. "long time lie". But it's on the deluxe cd.
@@strychnyne3530 I didn't know that. Thank you!
@@johnsparkstwo No, they wrote a lot of songs together!!! Oh Well from SOTU, Long Time Lie from DM, YOU MOVE from Spirit, Wagging Tongue from MM
Dave enjoys his own company at least. Martin can't get a word in edgewise.
We are blessed to still have them
Dave and Martin are the most nice people one could ever meet. So soft spoken, they are only 2 members now, but their personality and charisma is so big, that you feel they are all there, they still give that DM experience, been a fan since the beginning... every person who ever met them or went to see them on tour, is so lucky and blessed 💙💙💙 I wish them more years of creativity and success 💚💚💚
When you go to a Depeche Mode concert you go to church! It’s an amazing experience that lifts you and you enjoy the music and all the people that are their they are in someway family!
Well stated. I felt that way at my first DM show. Martin & Dave unite their fans. And there’s most certainly return of high reverence to DM from the fans at the shows. To come together, to be united in the music, really demonstrates that what they give to us is given right back. To experience a DM show is a very symbiotic coming together of souls who share this one thing in common. If only the rest of the world could experience the feeling…
Exactly! My first experience was on a SOFAD tour.
It makes me love their music more because they seem to be genuine and good people.
I'm probably the 10 000th person to say this but seriously this band's music is the soundtrack to my life. Fell for them as an awkward 11 year old tween when I first heard "People are People", seen them in concert at least 12 times now, met Martin and Fletch during the World Violation tour and now I'm a 50 year old eagerly anticipating the new album and tour. Dave, Martin, if you happen to read this, Montreal is waiting for you with bated breath and much love!
Ironically, People Are People is the one song they hate and refuse to play anymore.
The looks on Dave and Martin's faces when you pointed out that they "got away" with the words in the chorus to "Everything Counts" was priceless! I don't know if they've ever actually had it acknowledged like that before! Similar to the way I point out "Who uses words like "debauchery" in a pop song, these days? during conversations about why I consider myself their #1 fan or revere Martin as a lyricist.
The one thing I dislike about this interview is that it's only 19 minutes. Man, I could listen for a few hours of this.... is there more to this???
Brilliant interview. Love how Zane is all of us DM fans here in a more articulate fashion.
My kids (which are also fans) asked what Depeche Mode was to me and I explained that that all my struggles as a teen and later as an adult were soothe by their music. They’re as close to some sort of therapy or support when nobody else was there.
Martin, Vince, Dave, Andy (RIP) Alan and Daniel thanks for sharing your sentiments in the form of music. You kept me strong.
Music is therapeutic we need it
❤❤❤Beautifully Said❣️
Wouldn't it be great to have a few (non-alcoholic) pints with Dave & Martin. Completely down to earth. What a band DM are.
Martin and Dave don’t drink
@@zal3r285
Who told you that?
Part of the reason Alan Wilder left because Martin Gore became an alcoholic and Dave Gahan fell into drugs. 😢 Thank goodness both recovered from their addictions. I hope Dave, Martin, and Alan play music again together now that Andrew Fletcher passed away. I am in my 50s, and it was great to listen to Depeche Mode growing up. I hope they all work with Vince Clarke again as well
Dave no but Martin yes, so shut up.
@@zal3r285 Yeah. Martin is a sober alcoholic. Dave was mainly doing the heavy drugs but I dont think he can drink alcohol anymore.
One thing leads to another.
If you have never seen Depeche Mode perform live, then you've never really have been to a concert! Depeche Mode is the best frigging band on the Planet!! Dave and Martin are in a word, phenomenal!! Been a DM fan since the early 80's; their music is timeless. They are like fine wine; they get better with age. There is a huge void with Fletch gone; it's not the same without him. So much love and respect between them; so beautiful and inspiring. Thank you, Dave & Mart. ❤️
Saw them live in 2001 and 2009 in Birmingham UK Exciter was my first experience and will never forget how cool dave looked.
Shout out to Zane, his enthusiasm and knowledge of songs and lyrics is next level.
Hands down, one of the greatest BAND
Dave: Doing most of the talking.
Martin: Writing 3 new songs in his head.
LOL :)
There's a sense of rebirth and renewal with DM this time around. Can't describe it, I feel a shift! Epic!
The best interview I saw from them in many years. Congrats to the interviewer, he conducted the interview so fine and natural.
Depeche Mode is religion, and I've been a devotee for over 35 years. The quality of their music is incomparable, amazing, sacred. This interview is one of the best I've already seen.
Now they are DM. Dave and Martin
Amazing growing up having mostly these guys in my ears, nonstop. Somehow this interview has me in tears. Im so excited for this tour. Xx
Yep!!!!
did you listen to the rest on apple music? the whole hour was amazing
@@grayceworks yes! Best interview in a while!!!
Well I know what I’ll be listening to at the gym tomorrow!
Werent you one of the few who attended the private show by KROQ?
One of the best bands ever
DAVID & MARTIN - always in a great mood...
Zane the fanboy is able to cut through so articulately and the lads seamlessly come along for the ride. And what an insightful ride. Been a fan since 83. Can't wait to see them post fletch in 24 downunder. 30 years in the making...
David and Martin give so passion towards their music. I love how they talk about their music with all smiles. They are wonderful true Gentlemen. ♥️♥️♥️
I didn't want this interview to end. Is there a part 2 to this?
the rest of the hour-long interview is in audio form on apple music.
@@grayceworks I have seen these 2 parts, but how do I find the audio portion ? Please explain it like you’re talking to a 62 year old…Thanks!
@@largelingerie when you have searched scroll up down until you see it. So, UPDATED, they didn’t have it easily shareable before, but yesterday they finally made it into downloadable podcast format. So it will be easier to get to.
The love I feel for this band - deep within - has united me with fans from all over the world for over 20 years now at this point. THANK you, Depeche Mode! My life wouldn't be the same without you and your fandom! 🫶
I saw depeche mode in around 85, took my younger sister as she was infatuated with the 'pop' side of them. As a proto goth/alternative fan I was not looking forward to it. They blew me away with these dark, booming, soaring synths and a mixture of euphoria and bleakness. huge and powerful. i've been a fan since, to go deeper and higher at the same time. a band i still go to.
Great interview! Martin Gore is such an amazing song writer. His lyrics have the ability to take me on journeys that I only experience with DM and I love the tracks he sings on such as Home, Surrender, It Doesn’t Matter Two, One Caress to name a few. I can’t wait to hear the new album and see them perform next week ❤
Wow. It doesn't matter two is probably my favorite song of theirs.
depeche mode is something that happens to you when you need it😭 so very true
Zane is incredibly well research and Dave and Martin respond to this. Love it ❤
"I think Depeche Mode is something that happens to people when you need it." --Zane
Couldn't be more true. 🖤
Best interview I've heard with them in a long time.
Sometimes I forget how much I love Mode!
I can't believe how fresh they still look. 😍
In a time when we’re trying not to feel and think . You have a band that makes you do both.
Thank you Guys ❤❤❤❤
I loved Black Celebration, I had been listening to DM for about 2 or so yrs when that album came out and that was my first DM concert in 1985.
They express themselves so well...
It's a wonderful, brilliant and very, very interesting interview and they talk so beautifully about music. I love these guys and their music very, very much...😍❤🥳🥂🎊
There's a reason why I've listened to Depeche Mode since the 80's, the only music that has carried through my life...they understand me, they understand my pain, they give me pain, they give me joy, and they just keep getting better at it.
love these guys so much. it's so true, you come across DM when you need them, not just by accident. they've gotten me through so much ❤
Love Zane Lowe, he is a genuine fan and his enthusiasm and intelligence elevate interviews.
Doesn't get any better than this. Zane intervewing Dave and Martin.
I am thankfull. I was going by and heard their song everything counts in a little town inruussia similar to Basildon that was my inspiration thnks
Zane Lowe did an awesome job - what a comfortable, relax and compelling interview with 2 of my fav men!
Martin, we count those early albums. Absolutely great stuff.
Within 42 year they create more than 50 great songs you can made a Party only with Depeche Mode Music. I enjoy to be at Depeche Mode Partys approx. 6 times a year here in North Germany.
You don't expect a 15th album to be this powerful. But this is DM. 8 front to back consecutive run-throughs. Many conversations had with comments like "Had to pull over because it was no longer safe to drive". Some concern about anyone listening to the album while being in a bad way.
I so love these guys....they are so humble and beautiful in what they do I ve followed them from the age of 14 I'm 54 now seen a concert in South Africa and was hooked forever!! God Bless you Depeche mode you have been there from my darkest days to my most beautiful. Don't stop what your doing I own every album they made!!!!❤
This is a dream come true: Zane interviewing my favorite band of all time, Depeche Mode.
People are People has been on my mind regularly since 2016. It is more relevant than ever. That song should be part of a psa- it would be extremely powerful.
The conversation about the song Somebody explains so much. The ability for Martin to create a lyrical masterpiece to crystallize what we are to one another is just how elevated his communication skills are.
These guys had made wonderful and futuristic music long time ago..........awesome Thank you Guys.........The first time I listened a DM song was in 1984. Greetings from Medellin Colombia
Best band ever
How amazing true genius comes across as simple and grounded being, that is why you know they are genius
Depeche Mode is my favorite band ever!
After seeing Zane's interviews with Paramore, and specifically Hayley Williams, I wanted nothing more than for him to have the same deep conversations with my all time favourite band. So fantastic to see someone who clearly loves music so much just talk with Dave and Martin. Not simply ask questions, just talk. So informative and interesting, thank you Zane, Martin and Dave for giving us these insights. Look forward to seeing them live in June!
My sister in law lives in Vince Clarke’s old house, my wife used to play with Andy Fletcher’s brother Simon when they were little kids - True story. Basildon’s finest 👍
Any chance the full-length interview will be realeased on CZcams? I'm of course grateful for the 19 minutes, but the full 60 minutes would be even better
Zane is such a superfan that when talking about People are People, he quotes a lyric from "Everything Counts"
One of the best live bands I’ve ever seen ( violator and SOFAD tours)..I feel extremely fortunate to have seen them.👍🇬🇧
I just sow them last Sunday ( in Arena Zagreb) It's best concert I ever been...ever ! And I buy ticket for the show in Budampest next year ( litterly - I just can't get enough ! )Enjoying was on MAXIMUM ! I'm still in that night .. and think about was Dave said on the end: "See you next time "❤
I wish us many more concerts in the coming years !
Absolutely legendary, and Zane always makes everyone feel so at ease. Best interviewer in the business.
Interesting that Martin does not consider A Broken Frame (their second album) as part of their catalogue when in fact so much of Depeche's essence was already in A Broken Frame.
i hope they are fully aware of how much they mean to us on so many levels, truly the soundtrack to many peoples lives, i literally couldnt imagine life without depeche mode
Great interview, wish it was longer. When I was in my teens do remember listening to the band on my cassette tapes and it was the beat of metal pipes and synthesizers that stuck in my head about DM. Huge devotee ever since. The band also gave us tons of the best remixes and samplers.
As a gen z, this band was my childhood. Free love is my anthem for life. I finally get to see them in Chicago and my life will be complete!
I honestly didn't have a lot of confidence after hearing "Ghost Again" the first time, but I must say, the album as a whole was a fantastic listen.
THANK YOU FOR THIS! I can’t say enough how much I appreciate the insights shared here. I could listen to Martin specifically talk about his creative process, and Dave too. Very insightful interview. So excited to hear Memento Mori!! Been a fan since the beginning. I’d love to hear an interview like this for HOURS!!
Awesome interview. Zane had the perfect balance of fan and journalist . Thank you for this. Depeche have been the soundtrack of my life. Fan since 88, seen them 19 times and never been disappointed. Taking my son for his first concert in L. A. Next week, can't wait.
Very interesting interview! Just went to the show two days ago. Great! I also have the impression the two of them have gotten closer. And did not know that Martin has such a good voice :-)!!
Best band ever. Human emotion in musical form.
Great interview ,why did it have to end. I wanted more!
There is an hour long version of the interview on the Apple Music app 👍
What a great interview! Best I've ever seen with Martin and Dave.
Before We Drown is so powerful so beautiful 😭
How have you already heard it?
@@depechemode0220 😏 I'm in a whatsapp group where the album was leaked. Before We Drown is already my favorite song. But I'm sad because Martin sings only one song (Soul With Me) which is also beautiful. But this album is amazing just perfect.😌
@@depechemode0220 and the way Dave sings Don't Say You Love Me, oh my god what a perfection.

My favourite is dont say you love me. So beautiful. Daves voice is spetacular
Martin's laugh is very distinctive .

DM has been the soundtrack of my life since 35 years and I’ve seen every interview, but this is the best interview I've ever seen!
THEY ARE ONE OF THIS FOREVER BANDS, DEPECHE MODE, WHOT A GENIOUS GUYS, LOVE THEM
So glad! They are still alive!
Great interview. I'm so happy that the interviewer knows so many about Depeche Mode, that he can touch Dave and Martin. Really great.
Peace, enjoy and emptiness of the end - so very well said on "Momento Mori" Dave! The new album has a wonderful songs about the end. Thanks to Dave, Martin and Andy there in heaven for a great music adventure!
Absolutely love you guys! Thank you so much for your music DM! And the new album is very good!
Beautiful men, amazing artists!!! You are great and make my life so much better!!! and RIP Fletch, love and miss you 🔥
What an amazing band Iv followed these chaps since there first album...aswell as tears for fears. Such talent.
lifelong fan here, but can you imagine becoming a fan now ? and delving into that 40 year back catalogue ? WOW, what a journey that would be :)
Love them...can't wait to see them in Milan....passionate interview...
Seriously the best interview!!! Amazing
I remember watching these boys in Raquels in Basildon around 1980 . Loved them ever since
Much love to the one and only Depeche! ❤❤❤
I’m diehard DM fan since I was a young teen. I believe that Black Celebration is not only one of their best albums, but also a huge turning point in their discography. I’m not in the music business. Just a fan who has loved them for decades.
Absolute gods 😊 their contribution and influence over the past 40 years is so underrated 😬
I am also a fan of Depeche mode.
Going to see them this weekend in San Jose, CA. Can’t wait. They’ve come a long way from when I first saw them in 1982 playing at the Ritz in NYC. They kinda were “meh” back then. Now they are 🔥🔥🔥
Seeing next week in LA and Vegas then in Mexico City in September...
Next week in Vegas I get to see my favorite band. Have not missed a tour since Exciter. Great Interview.
