In 1838 This Slave Braved This Cave’s Bottomless Pit, And In Doing So He Made History

  • Sculpted from the Earth over a hundred million years, Mammoth Cave is a daunting labyrinth of contorted tunnels, passageways, vertiginous shafts and cathedral-like chambers - all immersed in darkness. This subterranean wonderland of towering limestone pinnacles and glittering gypsum is a place in which to marvel at nature’s artistry - or get lost in forever.

Interesting story! Kind of reminds me of a story about Daniel Boone, whose Home away Home Cave dwelling was discovered at the base of a forested Mountain somewhere in Tennessee! This discovery was made in the early 1960's and still had a few implements in it! Now we are talking over 250 years ago!
Also, being from Chicago, I once read that an underground Cavern was found beneath Carl Schurz High School that led to John Gray's farm 2 blocks North on Grace street! John Gray was known to be part of the Underground Railroad as they used to call it, and hid Slaves in it until they were ready to fend for themselves! I talked to the new owner of the Farm Complex one day, and he said that many manuscripts and papers were still in the Basement, which I hope were stored somewhere? Also, the building was demolished for a multi-unit housing Complex sometime in the 1990's, and when workers broke-down the Wooden barriers JG had erected, the passageway was discovered that directly led to the Schurz high School Cavern beneath the School! Right under John Gray's Farmhouse, pictures of which still exist, they found BRAIDED Black African Hair and a few other Kitchen utensils still lying around? Since John Gray probably wanted to remain anonymous over 150 years ago, he had the hole boarded-up until the demolishing squad did their dirty work! So, the passageway remained untouched for way over a Century! By that time, John Gray was long gone, as were his relatives when the 1900-1920's time period surfaced!
Then another curious discovery made its appearance? We don't know if John Gray had anything to do with it, but History books made note of the fact that a thriving Black Community developed in the 1800's, and was bounded by Belmont and Kimball Avenues going South to Milwaukee avenue, then West to Central Park, then North to Belmont avenue, then East to Kimball again! An old Black Church was on Barry Avenue and Kimball Avenue, right on the Southwest corner! I used to walk the area in the 1970's, and a few markers of those times still remained, especially in the alleys where a couple of barns still held their ground!
All those Historical places just walking distance from the Kedzie avenue Place we lived in at that time! Always great to be reminded of that period so close to where we lived!

It's Salt Peter not salt pepper. I crossed the bottomless pit as a kid in the late 60s and early 70s. As a kid I camped all throughout south central Kentucky That bottomless pit will scare you straight. It was and I guess still is dark. From there you have the combined trek over the walkway where it's pitch dark below you. The darkness was like an abyss spreading open to swallow you. Between that and the sign that says how deep underground you along with it being the lowest point early humans had inhabited really will freak you the......out. It did at least for a nine year old kid who's dad died when he was three. It really made for a scary world.

It is her murder of the most rudimentary rules of pronunciation that makes me cringe. Repeatedly. I have complained about this several times before. If you are going to impart information to the public, you have an obligation to do so with some semblance of verbal accuracy. Pronunciation guides, and people who are linguistically competent to coach you on the subject, are readily accessible. Use them.
