I read somewhere how interesting the traditional roles of fantasy are reversed on these episodes. Angel is the damsel on distress and buffy being the hero who has to save him. And how, in the end, those roles reversed with dru and spike. So interesting

When a particularly powerful magical evil doer dies and is buried, their malevolent magic can remain in their decomposing body, and when consumed by the worms, they become animated by that malevolent magic and "walk" as if a single entity.

One of the advantages of not watching Buffy when it first aired was not having to wait a week for the next episode. Also Gotta give mad props to Cody correctly calling the fact that a new slayer is only called when the active slayer dies. To be honest Cody has made a lot of correct calls in movies too.

It was interesting when Buffy was fighting Kendra at the end of Part 1 we noticed she fought the same as Buffy, you almost see she was a Slayer. The look on Buffy's face when Kendra says who she is. A great part 2 to What's My Line. We see Kendra as a total opposite to Buffy in how she approaches her work as a Slayer. Some great comedy moments too with Kendra talking about the Slayers Handbook, Buffy saying there's a handbook, and Giles saying when he saw Buffy, he thought the handbook would be useless. We also have the start of 'Xandelia', a most unlikely pair that absolutely nobody was shipping at this stage in the show. From vitriolic insults, to intense passion! Spike teaming up again with Drusilla as mentioned in earlier reactions, Spike, Drusilla and Angel/Angelus have a interwoven past down through the centuries which gives great drama to the show. An interesting point regarding Kendra and Buffy leaving their emotions separate to their slaying, even though Kendra seems detached from emotion, Buffy is very much aware of her vocation as Slayer and comes through in incredibly hard situations when having to choose the right path to follow, even though knowing it will seriously harm her emotionally. At this point you can really see the show becoming much more slicker.

A little background will help with the season. Buffy premiered in March of 1997 with no expectations and not in consideration for the future It became the first big hit in the target market ( 14-29 old females) for the network. They quickly ordered more episodes for the Fall network season. The show came back In September and was a bigger hit . By the 4th week they knew it was a hit and not a fluke.The show was on Monday nights at this time. The network did not have any programming on Tuesday and they decided in October they would move Buffy to Tuesday and follow with a new show they had hopes , Dawson Creek. To Joss Whedon this was scary. Moving a new show to a new night without any previous network shows…. a very small budget to let people know … and the move would be in the 2nd week in January. Whedon knew he had to do something to have the Buffy audience move and then stay on Tuesday. Think how crazy this was for the WB to attempt. I am telling you this so you make sure you do 2 episodes together and after you will understand. The last Monday night show was one called Surprise and then the first Tuesday show, shown originally the next night, was Innocence. After you see them back to back you will get the BTVS experience and understand why you should watch them like we did. The showing worked The Monday viewers watched the next night and even grew. Tuesday became Buffy night and Dawson Creek became a hit and the template for the teen dramas for the next decade The network realized that Buffy was a hit maker and the promos for a new fall show was promoted all the time that Spring, Charmed. I also remember that Gilmore Girls was promoted often on Buffy. This will explain the storytelling over this and the next few episodes The key was to make sure the viewers stayed with the show and changed their viewing habits. Hard to do even with a big network but with a show not even a year old to move day of week, start a brand new night of programming, and have no real outside advertising… and succeed beyond its target is impressive. I've always thought Kendra is more like the real slayer, you see her and you believe in it, you see slayer in her and that she's a vampire and demon hunter. Buffy is a pop version of slayer, slayer from your high school TV show.
There’s not really a slayer archetype. They’ve all been radically different. And they change over time as people, as well as slayers. Kendra and Buffy’s stickler and improv dynamic is echoed with Faith and Buffy, only Buffy taking on Kendra’s role, and Faith a more extreme version of Buffy’s.
I'm glad you are watching the original broadcast version and not the HD remaster in the scene when a restored Drucila walks out of the burning church carry spike the HD version crop's in so you don't see the background so it isn't anywhere near as creepy.

Buffy was correct to be repulsed by the "law enforcement" option. How could she keep those 2 worlds separate? What happens when she gets a human criminal who won't talk? how would she not beat the crap out of that human criminal like she can with the Supernatural? Plus, how could she decompress from the stresses of her Slayer duties if she then turned around and had to do the very similar stresses of Law Enforcement?

SMG originally auditioned for the role of Cordelia, but was cast as Buffy. Charisma Carpenter originally auditioned for the role of Buffy was late to her audition and later got cast as Cordelia once Lawson dropped.

Notice how Buffy's clothes changed in this episode. Bulkier clothes that are less gendered. The way she walks with less confidence? The way she curled up in Angel's bed. All signs of depression.
I tried to get my mother to watch twice. Both times ended up being repeatsof this episode. She does not deal with bugs. Bianca Lawson is Kendra. She is or recently was Beyonce's step sister. Cordelia showed moments of interest in Xander at least twice, the end of Some Assembly Required until he blew her off, and when Army Xander put his jacket on her.
The scene where Dru tortures Angel is interesting. Is she bringing up her family just to mentally torture Angel too. Is she angry at what Angel did, even though as a vampire she shouldn't? You can read it so many ways
I disagree. Some vampires are shown to care about their families. I think Dru was genuinely upset, having carried that hurt deep inside for a while, and decided to take it out on Angel. I mean, we see that Dru and Spike love each other, so vampires can clearly have deep connections with others.
When you said you wanted them to make it work..... you missed an opportunity to insert a clip of Rupaul saying, "make it work! Make it fuckin happen! I don't want to hear anymore goddamn excuses!"

I know she's batshit crazy but I had the BIGGEST crush on Drusilla when I was a kid. Major kudos to Cody for figuring out how Kendra was activated before they explained it. I like the name Xandelia. Not such a fan of the couple itself but that's just cuz I'm not a big Xander fan. Biggest thing that happened these episodes, even with the intro of Kendra and Dru being strong again, is OZ AND WILLOW!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Notice how Buffy's clothes changed in this episode. Bulkier clothes that are less gendered. The way she walks with less confidence? The way she curled up in Angel's bed. All signs of depression.

Cordelia showed moments of interest in Xander at least twice, the end of Some Assembly Required until he blew her off, and when Army Xander put his jacket on her.
The scene where Dru tortures Angel is interesting. Is she bringing up her family just to mentally torture Angel too. Is she angry at what Angel did, even though as a vampire she shouldn't? You can read it so many ways
I disagree. Some vampires are shown to care about their families. I think Dru was genuinely upset, having carried that hurt deep inside for a while, and decided to take it out on Angel. I mean, we see that Dru and Spike love each other, so vampires can clearly have deep connections with others.
When you said you wanted them to make it work..... you missed an opportunity to insert a clip of Rupaul saying, "make it work! Make it fuckin happen! I don't want to hear anymore goddamn excuses!"

I like how neither Slayer is particular good at the crossbow. Both Buffy and Kendra are attracted to using it, but both are terribly inaccurate with it.

@@spamfilter32 Buffy missed against Darla only a bit (too lttle practice back then) but not against the master, he caught the arrow right in front of his heart. And Kendra didn't miss but accidentally pulled the trigger.
