P Can stan hes talking about one individual though, there are people of both genders who go to college for their education and also people of both to also waste all of it doing the stuff that was expressed in the lyrics but we cant say weve never run into this type of person before regardless of their sex

So this ISNT misogyny. Dude made a song about the realities of college and women being abused or using their bodies, and men who take advantage of that. He was sending a message, not putting women down. Ladies, you are worth more than silver and gold.

when i saw them live parker said "this song is about both men and women" so misogynist no it could be abt anyone but slut-shaming possibly depending on how u interpret it. really i just think its abt someone who doesn't have good intentions and is focused on receiving attention and being seen as "fun" and the only way they think they can achieve this is through sex and parker is like naw "there's no chance at all" he probably feels bad for the girl in this song and believes she's letting people take advantage of her...thts just how i feel abt the song

Maybe I'm wrong but to me the synopsis makes sense & that's exactly what I thought when I first heard it. It just seems like a kinda sad reality of what can happen to a girl when she's had her first taste of freedom that he's seen happen 1st hand.

I'm not sure why Daughters is the poster child for misogynist songs, because I think we can all think of songs from the same/similar genres that are much more explicit. I can't speak on Parker's beliefs now, but I think we can all agree that at the time he wrote the song during a time where he didn't care how he portrayed people in his music.
A real discussion would be about the big problem in scenes like pop punk where women as a whole are never neutral parties in lyrics; you aren't going to find a lot of songs where the words "she" and "her" aren't followed by something negative, romantic, or both. It's a weird culture where from the song's viewpoint, a girl can only be described in a positive light if she's doing exactly what's wanted of her, and even then human flaws are enough for the protag to fantasize physical violence or emotional harming them. I can't remember who said it, but there was a woman a few months back who said a lot of the online condemning of specific artists and songs (like Daughters) is only happening because the problem can't be ignored anymore and people feel like that they have to lash out + cut ties with these artists/songs so that their own social standing isn't questioned. It doesn't look deeper into anything, it doesn't "solve" anything, it's just kind of done to save face.
There are a few articles that explore this subject and the relationship between artists, their content, and their audiences:

Don't really think Parker's a misogynist, he's just really awesome at chanelling his feelings into words. Honestly sounds like he's been huirt and he just decided to sing the punk about it rather than the blues.
Also with the lyrics "and my will's tested strong" I'm getting people are partaking in things that are tempting for him to join in after the realization of he's there until further notice but since he's more aware than ever that he might never be calm again, it might be shaking his every bone that he has just wanted to be all "NO!" finding himself walking outside and shouting to God himself "WHAT'S ALL OF THIIIS!?" Deeendundundundeendeeen. Just kidding but not really, thank you for your video content.

I hate the policing of lyrics. People just want to get offended. If this was written by a woman, theyd be like "wow go girl u so savage!11!1!1! You tell that frat boy the hell off!"
As a poet, like, people shouldn't assume the narrator and the writer are interchangeable. I've written from the perspective of someone who is no one like me. Should I be held accountable? Soon we'll only be able to have autobiographical nonfiction without hurting anyone's all too fragile feelings.
If not for double standards, these people would have no standards.

While I love Under Soil and Dirt, I just perceive some of the writing as someone who was young, more immature, and angry. Listening to a lot of this music in my tail end of college at almost 22y/o, I will say some of the lyrics are a bit crude/abrasive (daughters, that one line in Mt. Diablo). But, what 18 y/o from suburbia doesn't say ridiculous shit like that? Almost none. You can very obviously see him and the band mature through each album lyrically. I personally think that this is pretty blatently aimed at a woman and this sort of ridicule isn't something that shouldn't be tolerated so easily from young men, though it was from a different time before morals shifted, I do simply think it was because he was 18 and had some growing up to do.

Most people view the person who hurt them negatively. Atleast when the wound is still fresh. Anytime I listen to High Regard I'm yelling it at my ex in my mind 🤷‍♀️ majority of TSSF songs can also be about a guy if you make minor word changes. And honestly most of us know a guy who went to college and didn't get smarter... 😂 if a woman was singing these things about a guy breaking her heart sleeping around in college she would get all the woman power behind her and probably win a Grammy. Guy's have feelings too.

i’m years and years late on this but i’m on my bi monthly TSSF binge and i don’t think any line in this song is misogynistic at all. hookup culture is fine if that’s your thing but you can’t be mad about somebody heavily disagreeing with that lifestyle, it comes with the territory lol. realistically speaking if you’re approaching someone strictly because you wanna bang them then you can’t be offended when that person makes a judgement of you, when your intentions were to literally use that person to get what you want anyway. people have real personalities and emotions, and often times don’t care to be used to satisfy a stranger, so there’s really no grounds to counter someone not wanting to just be another college party fling. like i said if you’re both on the same page and that’s your thing it’s fine, i just don’t see how being frustrated with people expecting that out of you is misogynistic.

I don't think Parker is a misogynist BUT a lot of the lyrics from USAD are soooo cringy and as a woman...who's experienced misogyny (noah fence but I kinda find it a lil annoying that men even talk about this bc like . you can't tell women what's misogynistic or not lmao) there are lyrics where I listen and I'm like hey that's not cool.
"That you'll meet your demise in a drunken man's bed" -- using the term "demise" here literally is saying that it's a bad decision/loss......so saying she's going to ultimately regret sleeping w a drunk dude is pretty slut shamey.
"And to think you're somebody's daughter" ok this was written in 2011 or earlier but like everyone is their own person and their value doesn't lie in relation to other men or women.
On one of my FAVORITE tssf songs, mt. diablo: "do you look yourself straight in the eyes and think about who you let between your thighs?" -- .......slut shaming......
I definitely do not believe Parker hates women BUT he hates his ex's who are women and I think that's why people jump to that conclusion. But I do think it's pretty wack that men are like "PEOPLE ARE REACHING!!!!" .....maybe because women HAVE had these things said to them in a demeaning and misogynist way...
But also - it's really fucked up that everyone in the comments is like "oh PC culture ruins everything everyone is so offended" wouldn't you rather learn from others and what their perspectives are? And if something offends them, or hurts their feelings - to listen to what they're saying instead of jumping down their throats bc they're challenging something you enjoy? Kinda ignorant. Art and music should NOT be free from criticism - the same way that comedians are constantly being called out for making racist, sexist, homophobic, etc jokes. You can still write angry lyrics about a girl without slut shaming her and that's that on that.

Most of them I feel like anybody would love to hear other perspectives, but not when somebody gets offended and automatically starts shit talking the band, the artist and ect. Once you do that than you can’t help but have other people jumping down throats to defend themselves/ them. It’s just in our nature to do. Most of the tweets and comments I see from the PC culture never really want to talk about or debate they just automatically assume and that’s that, which is why most people are not agreeing with the PC movement. I think people just need to learn to sit and listen, and to maybe see that there’s more to life than what we think we know. People slut shame, men and or women, cardi b and other female artists talk down on men all the time. Humans just need to get the bigger picture and not try to be right all the time, because in a year or two we’ll grow and think of things differently.

I think the song is negative in that he is viewing this specific girl in a negative light. The lyrics in my interpretation are expressing frustration with people in general. As he doesn't want to be at the party or whatever at all. I think it is describing his mood and emotion at a particular point in time which most people can relate to. He wants a meaningful relationship with someone. It almost sounds like he is responding angrily to borderline sexual harrassment. I'm sure most females can relate to being hit on by a drunk dude at a party they didn't want to go to. After people get rejected they tend to be rude. He does seem to be roasting this particular female.

i'm gonna disagree with Nate here despite really liking that song and band, and say that i think Parker Cannon and the song are inherently misogynistic because:
    1. When you make the song to be about "somebody's daughter" and not a person with a name and the ability to make decisions on her own it's because you're denying the girl as a subject and that ability itself, assuming all she is is somebody's daughter and that she should be doing only what her parents or father expects her to do, something that at least for me is clearly a patriarchal concept.
    2. the denial of the girl's ability to make her own decisions is a repetitive theme in the song that we can percieve when he judges her for not studying enough or attending too much parties or being sexually active, assuming her to not even be able to choose a sexual partner wisely (you'll meet your demise in a drunken man's bed), where he also portrays this as being the girls fault as a result of her being irresponsible, an idea you get off the whole song in general.
    3. Parker only writes songs about things that really affected him or made him angry/sad/etc. so none of his lyrics would be just him saying things like "if you go to a party you'll get hungover all day bc that's what happens when humans drink alcohol at parties haha", i think all of the things that Nate views as just pretty straight foward are actually in the song with an inttention to judge and shame on the girl he's talking about, and those are things women in general get shamed on, so you could say the backgorund to this song is a general perception of women that Parker has and that come from a sexist and specifically mysoginist culture, which is the problem that feminism addresses as a theory.
Now, i think the point of being critical about the songs we listen to is not to boycott artists for writing about this or that and i say this as a pretty big TSSF fan that really enjoys this song in particular despite not liking the lyrics. The point is to acknowledge that the kind of mentality shown into this and many other songs in the genre are the surface or the tip of the iceberg of a much bigger problem that has to do with sexual harassment, manipulation, emotional abuse and many other problems that artists of the genre like Brand New, Front Porch Step, Moose Blood, Neck Deep etc have been involved with. That only tells us that the scene is straight up an unsafe space for girls and women, and that the mentality behind the songs (not the songs) and the actions of the artists etc is all part of a same problem that is directly linked with misoginy and concerns us as men in this scene; and the only way to put a stop to it is being critical with our favourite bands and with ourselves, and listening to what victims have to say about the problem despite it bothering us for being too PC or whatever, imo.
Also, i agree with you on the falcon kick thing, he actually did that to a guy taking a selfie on stage on texas in 2015, it was not even that hard, good meme material tho.

juanjovr1 A lot to unpack here, but I’ll go after #1 first.
      1. You bring up how she has expectations as a daughter, but Nate pointed out that if you flip the lyrics around, you can easily say “And to think that you’re somebody’s son”. It holds the same exact weight. Is it Misandrist? No. It’s simply saying “Wow, someone took time to raise you and look what you’re doing at college. If a girl artist wrote about some guy she views as a jock-type that drinks and sleeps around, and said “To think that you’re somebody’s son”, would you rush to comment and attack misandry as well?
      2. I don’t think he’s saying she can’t make her own decisions, it’s that the decisions she makes are shitty for her. If she’s just hooking up with random drunk men, that’s inherently not good for her. It’s not really an attack on women or a GIRL for sleeping around specifically, it’s judging a Person for getting wasted constantly and sleeping with random People. Keep in mind, He’s still judging the drunk guy that sleeps with her as well.
      3. Agreed, Parker writes about things specific to him. As a straight man, he dates women. This specific woman caused Parker to feel a type of way and he wrote about it. It doesn’t represent how Parker feels about women as a whole, he doesn’t say “Much like all women, you sleep around and make bad decisions.” It’s being direct and aimed at ONE woman whose actions Parker felt he needed to write about. Judgemental, absolutely. But not inherently mysoginistic.
      4. The scene is NOT inherently bad for women/girls, when the Brand New thing happened, they were essentially cancelled. Front Porch Step receieved huge backlash and I don’t hear about them at all anymore. Moose Blood have been kicked off very inportant tours. Neck Deep kicked out Lloyd. You’re speaking as tho every band does horrible things and the community just lets it slide lol.
Every band ever at these shows nowadays makes it a point to make sure Everyone’s comfortable and to look out for each other.

@@Dylans3Tears sure it's a way to look at it, maybe i didn't make it clear enough in the first comment but my point is that a lot of things the song talks about regarding said girl fall into wide spread amount of misogynistic stereotypes that do concieve women in general that way so you could assume Parker wrote the song with those views in mind just as you could assume the opposite, and honestly at this point both sides are assuming Parker's way of thinking at the moment of writing the song so no one really is holder of the truth, and idk about the whole scene thing, personally i think fue backlash all these artists got was fue minimum to expect after knowing what happened, but the important thing is that those things happened and even tho artists are putting in an effort to change that state of events, which is good, that doesn't mean we don't need to be critical about artists and people in the scene concerning their views and actions
