Editor's Note: My edits were all made to keep the video on one, central topic by editing together relevant commentary from many parts of Hasan's streams to create a storyline that is still followable by the viewer. I also edited in commentary of my own in places, in addition to relevant external information that improves the viewing experience. A lot of edits were made for comedy purposes, or to enhance the comedic timing of certain beats, but never to misrepresent Hasan's point of view.

Umm. Saying that medieval European steel was shit and the swords were blunt is not really true. And saying that Katanas were these superweapons and the steel was this amazing quality steel is not really true either. One of the reasons they folded the steel multiple times was because of not so great quality of the steel.
The swords in Japan and Europe were tools for warfare, for the most part. You got what you paid for.
Katanas typically were stiffer and maybe had a slightly harder edge, which also made them more brittle. The Japanese weren't as heavily armored as your average European swordsmen either.

16:12 I believe its purely based on tradition and pride of the craftsman ship. Basically in Japan,
    1. Shinto/Buddhist tradition is still a big part of the culture and taken very seriously even whille most of the population is borderline atheist, and
    2. Japan has a huge culture in Craftsmanship which is called "職人魂" and most of the tecniques come from centuries of tradition and perfection in the field which leads to a huge sense of pride of their training and crafts. You can find this "pride" in literally any work in japan, all from screws to food to snacks to bread to noodles to buildings to pottery to literally anything more than like 2-3 generations of work and training.
They have lots and lots of respect for their works and is sadly a reason why in a hyper capitalist modern society, starts to fade away due to quantity with decent quality valued over higher quality but slower production. This only worked in the more colective/socialized economy around the 60s-70s and after the bubble in the economy popped in the 90s thanks to hyper capitalist policies, its a culture slowly disappearing along with the population (xenophobia both in the left and right doesn't help either).
I really hope azan goes to see some of this like he said in the vid, because experiencing this craftmanship firsthand is hell of an experience, and I know for a fact that if youre respectful (and im sure hasan will be) to them and their works, most people would be welcoming.

Not really because now you have more access to technology that makes it much easier, you have access to the global market of iron rather than just in your country, and you actually understand the science behind swordmaking, so you can produce higher quality work. Sure you have less competition but you also have way more advantages than any swordsmith 300+ years ago

Tbf, modern western spring steel swords are like, obv better then traditional methods of producing katana, but even still better then modern methods, springsteel is very over powered compared to most steel used in modern katanas, katanas are stiff and when bend, get permanently bend for example. Yes some modern katanas are made to include springsteel, and then they get very close(the gap overall isnt that big tbf between general modern katanas and modern springsteel western sword)
