  • These commercials aired on ABC on September 30th, 1979
    1. KABC Eyewitness News Bumper (More artwork that looks like it's from an Intellivision game box)

People in 1980 would be floored by the 80" flat screen TVs we have in 2022.

@ 14:42 it's Julie Hagerty of the comedy classic "Airplane!" movies and the current Oscar nominated film "Marriage Story"...she still looks great today in her 60s.

That it sure is. "Airplane!", in fact, flew and landed the next year in theatres.

For starters, thanks for yet another commercial volume coming from my neck of the woods, although way before my time! That’s just how us Californians get down though my boy! Oh, Johnson and Johnson, pre lawsuit. It seems like now, everybody and they mama going after those guys.

5:01--"Plop-plop, fizz-fizz, oh, what a relief it is!" What an iconic jingle!
8:50--Oven Fry was my family's favorite way to fix chicken back then. (I believe it's still around.)
11:41--We had 7-Eleven in my home state of Iowa back then, but they disappeared some years ago, although I think they're still pretty big in some parts of the country. Sub sandwiches from those types of places are OK but not as fresh as Subway, Jimmy John's, etc.
13:10--I love that A & W jingle, and the can design! Maybe A & W could be the next brand of soda (or "pop", to us Midwesterners) to go retro?
Back then I thought "Three's Company" (7:46) and "Eight Is Enough" (13:40) must be connected somehow because of the similar titles. It was only much later that I learned they are 2 completely different and unrelated programs.
15:42--Wow, they really do say "Bring out the Best Foods, and bring out the best"! I'd always wondered, being from a part of the country where it's branded as Hellmann's.
16:29--Pepsi Light--that must be an early version of Diet Pepsi.

Murder By Death-loved that movie, did not expect that cameo in the final scene
Wendy's-Pearl and Mr.Bookman love my favorite burger toppings
Close Up-before Thomas Magnum was a detective,he acted in commercials
240-Robert-those helicopters flying at such close quarters looked frightening
Happy Days-Mrs'C doesnt deserve to be there :(
    Three's Company-Furley was cheating
Taxi-Elaine would later join the #metoo movement
York Peppermint Patty-the kids are probably thinking their mom needs professional help
The Lazarus Syndrome-he better have a good lawyer..
A&W Root Beer-my fingers got tired after a while of holding the can like that
Eight Is Enough-Tom Cruise executed this idea much better
Vega$-saving the"Nun From A Gun"..Abel Ferrara mustve directed that episode

What a cast on this ABC Sunday Night Movie!
I never heard of 240-Robert either but it was done by the guy behind CHiPs, didn't last nearly as long though.
The KABC news artwork does look like an Intellvision game. If this was a game it would have been ABC News Simulator to go along with the licenses Mattel acquired for many of their games in the day. Plus they had their own take on WABC's The 4:30 Movie, called The 3:30 Movie here!

1:21--I thought Wendy's was always a fast food chain, albeit one of the better ones (which they still are IMHO). Back then we had Judy's--a Wendy's knockoff--in my area. They were forced out of business when they lost a trademark infringement lawsuit filed by Wendy's, and the Judy's locations in my area were converted to Wendy's.

Somehow I doubt that the pizza-looking taco-tasting pizza lasted very long. Conversely, I'm surprised women never realized that the easiest way to attract men is to make your hair smell like beer.

    • @80sCommercialVault
      @80sCommercialVault  Před 4 lety +3

It varied by state/region as pull-tab cans were actually illegal in some states. By the mid 80's most soda/beer cans were the modern "pop top" type nationwide.
