How do these British made speakers sound some 40 + years later

Yes I think they do as well, hoping that I might be lucky enough to get a pair to try at the right price one day.
Great video Michael, In my experience 'shouting or brashness' at higher volumes is a common trait of budget equipment in general. The more you spend the louder you can go before it occurs.. I think the human ear is very sensitive to mid range sounds too.. Maybe try putting a few ohms in series with the mid driver to tame things a little.. Thanks again for your great videos..

Take some of the stuffing out of the mid-range keep it around the sides but take about half out of the bottom of the tube should relax the mid-range, you might want to paint the cardboard tube with PVA glue both sides blue tack is a good idea and as a gasket for the drivers, if it was me I would actually put a hole in the back the size of the Tube and have it all the way open as a dipole , cabinets to small for the speakers worth putting a slot in better than a port, but you could use drain pipe with a bend elbow nearly halfway Dieppe of the cabinet and then the bend line the drain pipe Port with some foam cellulose foam like quarter of an inch washing up sponges like from Tesco's the coloured ones! just in the centre of the port not on the ends, then just have the rest of the foam on the bottom and sides make sure there's free space to the port, and brace the front baffle above the 10" driver before the midrange with an inch Square piece of pine across not touching the sides of the cabinet.
what make of capacitors are you going to go with and type try metal film or mylar .
didn't notice a resistor for the tweeter you could put a 0.4ohm or slightly under 0.2ohms with the induction coil in series for the tweeter what would be in parallel going to ground terminal that make the tweeter little bit brighter could be made to be good speakers.
Thanks John for some interesting things to try, I have ordered some alcap caps from Falcon, will give those a try out first, see if there are any real differences and go from there. You have given me some more things to try and tweak the speakers. I will report back with an update video and what the next moves might be. As I do really intend to keep these speakers. I will checkout the resistor for the tweeter when I start the recap as well.
@@MichaelYates I thought alcap were only electrolytics, they make film caps? I know Falcon do think are part of claritycaps what are very good bit expensive, can you get paper in oil or oil in mylar, Are the best for tweeters and mid-range. Failing that polypropylene or polystyrene if low values, Look forward to your review and your thoughts on it!! Let me know if you come across any leak speakers thanks! Might be not necessary for the resistor after the recap, I'm just saying if you like it a little bit brighter is the easiest way to go about it. Remember with film camps they have an out foil what isn't marked general so you need to really have this tested and marked. You might be able to test yourself by using the aerial on your radio, holding the capacitor by the body touching one the terminal on the tip of the aerial and terminating which side is Louder, will be the outer foil. like when you touch the aerial with your hands it increases the the reception same principle otherwise you have to use a scope. Worth wrapping all your components in copper foil tape as well soldering little wires like headphone wires to the capacitors resistors and coils, but need to have masking tape first for coils, and earthing it out to a separate terminal on the speaker to a metal body that wall quieten the circuit down and isolate it better. Get yourself some as well acoustic vinyl mlv mass loaded vinyl, it comes self-adhesive and stick it to the inner walls of the speaker this should really help but leave the back just all of the sides but don't go up to the edges leave a gap half an inch all the way round make sure it's stuck down well use a paper roller for wallpapering

@@MichaelYates yes Wilmslow Audio they make some good kids have you built any of their kits, are they expense those mondorf ? claritycap very good you should try them and there English company worthwhile you going active with those speakers actually linkwitz makes an active unit built and sold by Nelson pass, DSP or ASP depends what you prefer $130, better than any passive crossover you'll need multiple amps to drive it tho ideally using active what doesn't have to be expensive 3 power or integrate amps
@@johnsweda2999 No I have not built any of their kits. I am still doing budget items for now, pretty much between £20 and £150 or so. See the kits are quite a bit more.
But as the channel progresses hopefully work my way up in the price range. The caps were not to bad price wise, though had to get 2 values for some just to make up one value, either using them in series or parallel. Still waiting for them to be dispatched at the moment.

Yes Celestion Ditton made some great speakers. Ditton works used to work for many years at Ditton and he's channel is well worth a visit as he repairs and tests loads of speakers www.youtube.com/@dittonworks
