How to stop bad smells on Dyson vacuum cleaners

  • It's not possible to completely avoid smells on any vacuum cleaner by definition of how they work; they concentrate smelly dirt in the bin. To minimise odours on modern Dyson handhelds, simply empty after every use, rinse the filter monthly, and avoid sucking up smelly material. If you can't avoid smelly material, then clean your carpets regularly with Zorb (see my other videos on that linked to below). Dust in the internal cyclone discharge chamber does not contribute to smells - it can't because it isn't part of the air path, unlike dirt in the main bin. There's absolutely no advantage to cleaning the internal cyclone discharge chamber which is supposed to be dusty for its entire lifetime. Some claim the cyclones clog. This has been proven to not happen under normal responsible use for the lifetime of the product. However, as with any machine, abuse and neglect (such as not simply emptying the bin before the max fill line) can lead to such failure. This is obviously not what is being discussed in this video, which assumes responsible usage and treatment. Some seem to take offense to this and suggest it's wrong. They claim smells are removed after the cyclones are washed. I don't deny this, but the explanation for that is that by washing the cyclones, you're emptying the bin, which is necessary, as well as the parts that aren't along the air path (the internal cyclone discharge chambers), which are not necessary, and so can be misled. Alternatively, the three steps above to avoid smells are not being followed. Anyone who suggests that under normal, responsible use, that the cyclones naturally clog, or that smells originate from the cyclone discharge chamber must objectively evidence their claims, given the burden of proof is on them to justify actions not recommended by the manufacturer. To date, no one has provided this evidence (vague anecdotes and testimony anyone could have made up are not evidence). Nor have they systematically shown how to reproduce failure under normal responsible use, immediately casting doubt on their contrarian claims.

    Don't waste any time watching this video. It provides absolutely no help for a stinky dyson vacuum.

      That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. This video explains exactly how smells happen, provides the proof, and explains what you can do to minimise them. You can simply contradict it flat out without a dot of supporting evidence, but there's equally no reason to believe you either, especially as you make absolutely no sense. People can make their own minds up.

    I feel like this guy was paid by dyson to defend their bad design. I bought a vacuum used from someone and I tried all cleaning tricks under the sun and it still smelled. Basically every part that touched the air smelled. I had to take apart the cyclone and soaked it in soapy water over night and air dried it for a couple days to reduce the smell. The smell is still there but not as strong.

      I feel like this guy is a paid anti-dyson shill who will just say the opposite of what's shown to be true with correct usage in the video. You took a used and no doubt abused product and almost certainly didn't do what was specified in the video, did things you're not supposed to do, and then complain it still smells. Probably didn't correctly rinse the filter, probably didn't use microsponges...and so on. Yawn

    I changed the filter, cleaned the cylinder inside the basket and got two dryer sheet, made a knot 🪢 to unite them and passed them through the hole inside that cylinder and also wiped the cylinder and everything around it with it.. That removed the bad odor.

    Thank you very much for your video! I have 2 V11 outsize units. I purchased one directly from Dyson and the other on EBay. The EBay purchase, I may send back...there is an apparent mold like smell coming from the motor (inside the silver mesh filter part). I've cleaned the bin but when I turn on the vacuum without the bin (I know you're not supposed to do it) it VERY apparent. I emailed the seller to see if he compromised the unite when he claimed he sanitized it. He has great ratings. Should I open it up to see what's going on?

      I don't advise doing anything the manual doesn't advise. You'll have to make a decision about the returns for yourself since it is your money at stake.

    Do odor neutralizing products help if I vacuum them up and let it sit? I bought a Dyson from a guy who had a dog and every time I turn it on, I smell it. I've cleaned the inside, vacuumed to baking soda several times, but it still smells like dog every time. My next idea is to vacuum up enzymatic odor neutralizer to see if it helps.

      Try carpet cleaning microsponges. Plenty of videos on my channel about them. This was also discussed in this video along with the two other solutions.

    Not a bad video at all....I will however say that if you've got some reasonable DIY skills its really not that hard to crack these open and give them a good cleanout. In my experience the internal cyclone/catchment area can and does contribute to the smell, despite your tests there. Breaking the vac down slightly and giving the area a clean and blowout with compressed air does help.

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  Před 3 dny

      I'm sure. But the whole point of the video is to explain why it's irrelevant to. It's not recommended by the manufacturer or designed to be broken apart. The things listed all but eliminate bad odours if you do them correctly.
