Must not be illegal to own railroad beam here in Ohio. I live on the same road as the local sheriff and salvage yard. Pile of railroad beams in front of my garage in plain site near the road for the last 8 years.
It's more about weather They like you or not or whether or not they dislike you and think they can make some money off of you and they'll start inventing laws that don't exist, Even though there's so many laws on the books nobody in the world knows what the law is anyway. You are correct about having possession of anything from train tracks..spikes, tie plates, timbers or rail will get you in trouble. I cleaned out an old building and had a 24” piece of old track used as an anvil..I tried to scrap it and got caught. The yard gave me a talking to and told me to take it home or they would call the cops…turns out rail parts , sewer lids/grates and fire hydrants are illegal to have.
