    On this week’s 10, we’re looking at 10 teams whose horrendous decisions led them into financial insolvency - and almost killed them for good.
    Our list is dominated by English and Italian clubs, but while some teams, like Leeds, Fiorentina, and Chelsea have recovered from financial mismanagement and scandal, others are still mired in lower divisions, like Parma, Portsmouth, and Derby County. Of course, Covid has made life more difficult, as in the case of Kaiserslautern, but it isn’t just minnows who fall prey to the taxman, with Glasgow Rangers and even the mighty Barcelona falling off their perches in recent years.
    If you’ve ever wondered what happened to Malaga, what Wayne Rooney will do at Derby, or how Messi contributed to Barca’s crisis, this is the video for you. Let us know what you think in the comments.

    I’d throw in Chivas USA, a former MLS side in LA that wanted to utilize a similar policy to Chivas Guadalajara. While Guadalajara utilized a policy of utilizing only Mexican players, Chivas USA tried creating a roster of only players with a Hispanic background (so Americans with Mexican ancestry or foreigners from across the Americas were their targets). Chivas USA struggled since its inception in 2004 and were regarded as the worst side in MLS. In 2014, their arch-rivals LA Galaxy won their 5th MLS Cup while Chivas USA would be dissolved at the end of that same year. Since then, a newly formed club called LAFC has emerged in the same area where Chivas USA operated in and has already won a Supporter Shield.

    • @jonb3150
      @jonb3150 Před 2 lety +1

      No they could not hold on to Messi even if they had sold Griezmann. At first Barcelona claimed they could hold on to Messi if Griezmann was sold but then it turned out not to be true. Plus Barcelona was in massive problem just getting their new signings registered into the team, like Depay and Aguero etc.
      Alot of players like Umtiti would refuse to leave since he was on such good salaries at Barcelona. Coutinho and Dembele are basically unsellable for the same reason, they won't get nearly the same salaries anywhere else. Barcelona is in an absolute mess due to their overspending both on transfers but especially on wages(players can't be moved on after they sign for Barcelona because nobody wants to pay the same wages except maybe PSG).

If you knew your business was going to fail and was loosing money but you still wanted to maintain the high rolling lifestyle would you let your parents remortgage their house to fund your business albeit for the next few months or year even with no realistic prospect of paying them back?
      Would you take advantage at someone’s inability to do business right also if you cared about them. I don’t think you would and I know it’s a jump to assume the relationships are the same etc
      Honestly speaking of he was told this could bankrupt the club would he have taken it? I don’t think we will ever know the truth. My point is that he is not the most virtuous person out there and at best he never even considered the impact to the club. Most people who saw how Barcelona were operating could have said something isn’t right. It’s not sustainable. That’s all I’m saying. He doesn’t need to be lauded for everything.

But hey, delude yerself and believe its all the same if you want. In any other country it would be obviously a new entity and club - and yeah, FIFA etc - not known for corrupt decisions and actions eh! yer club died ya zombie - just be happy you have a club and that you won yer first trophy and let the fantasy of 55 go. To have seen a Quad Treble too. Yeah, last year was shite for Celtic, but we move on and go again. Maybe get 9 for a third time. Oh, and I was also alive to see Rangers die. So yeah, not jealous at all. Back when you had Laudrop and Gazza, I was then, and worried about how many you'd get. Then you died, and so it is only a matter of time to Celtic beat the record of 54 leagues by the one contiguous entity, and not some Zombie Sevco, that we can all agree CHEATED to win some of the 9 in a row by financial tom foolery - so jealous? of what Zombie? That we have just done a second 9 in a row with many trebles? That we have a european cup to our name? You're hurting, I feel for you, having your greatest (and I do mean greatest) rivals hold the finest record. Me? Dude, how can you not count to 1? You have 1 premier league. If you ARE the same club, then pay all the old debts off. Liquidation means the company died, if you think that a dead company can transfer its history to a new one ok - that makes no sense to normal folks, but I expect it from folks who can't tell the difference between 1 and 55. Wait, you think going bust and dying was worth stopping your rivals getting ten? You've almost bankrupted again - and will do so soon enough - but I guess liquidation 2 will have as much impact on your logic than Sevco did. mad foolish zombies

OK chief whatever. But yes, RFC are dead, RIFC, or Sevco if you prefer, are a new entity. Give us one example of this being the case in any other business or club - you can't as it doesn't happen. Search deep down - you know it to be true. The company paid for the club, the club couldn't exist without the company, the company died, therefore the club ceased to exist. It truly isn't hard to figure it out. You should count yourself lucky that further action wasn't taken against Oldco to negate the leagues that they won whilst cheating, and be happy that you got a new club to follow and that you've won a trophy. Wait a minute “Barca paid double the asking price for Dembele and De Jong” ????
    That’s just wrong on so many levels. Makes it sound like BVB were saying “Oy if you lot want Dembele it’ll cost ya 70 million “ and Barca said “nah screw that mate, we’re bloody rich with all this Neymar money. We insist on giving ya 140 million and not a penny less”. Whereas the truth of the matter is that Dortmund had put a 70 million asking on Dembele BEFORE PSG signed Neymar and smashed the transfer record in the process. Once that happened every highly rated attacking player Barca had their eye on to replace neymar instantly had their asking price sky rocket overnight. I’m one of the biggest critics of bartomeu but in that situation the only thing he can be blamed for is not making Neymar’s buyout clause 1 billion or some other completely unobtainable amount.
    I know that the amount of time to cover it was brief but still could have qualified that statement by putting it in context of “after PSG broke the transfer record for Neymar “
    As for Frenkie De Jong the asking price may have been 35 million euros the previous season BUT after the phenomenal champions league run Ajax went on that season the asking prices for their emerging stars skyrocketed overnight. Barca were in fierce competition with PSG for his signature and winning that race was a huge win for the club and at the time it was a signing they could afford. It was a very similar story why De Ligt cost Juventus a hell of a lot of money. Again removing context for the sake of hyperbole.
    Very sloppy writing there which could have been amended with either qualifying the statement or giving it a bit of forethought or both.
    I’m just a Barca fan with a day job and yet I picked up on that immediately so how people whose whole job is being football experts allowed that to slip is beyond me. This isn’t obscure stats from twenty or more years ago about a team barely anyone has heard of, rather this is stuff from very recently about one of the biggest clubs so all of this stuff that I’ve mentioned is very widely known at least one would expect it to be, even among English football pundits.

    What exactly was the bad decision with Chelsea? Sounded like a feel good story, not a terrible decision. And it’s unclear which “bad” decision forced Chelsea down into the bottom tiers. Seemed like a structural weakness of failing to revamp the stadium and expand rather than one decision which led to its relegation.
