Solo Slooping isn't always a fun time, especially when you have to choose between efficiently making gold or indulging in PvP. But what if I told you that there was a way to get the best of both worlds?
What if you could PvP to your heart's desire without ever putting your loot at risk? That's right, in today's episode, I am going to try out how effective the strategy of Mermaid Stashing actually is and if it's worth adopting in your books of how to make gold.
I reckon that some Solo Tips are always welcome and since I have found myself engaging in Solo Gameplay more often than not recently, why not go and try out if this works?

I found out via a supply crate that you can bring things above water below and the mermaids would still take it. Ever since, I wanted to try and bring some gunpowder kegs under and make a 'mermaid trap' of sorts and get an enemy ship to chase me through a treasury spot and end up getting 20 kegs to the hull... probably *WAY* too tedious in action with little to no payoff, but maybe you could try it?
Oh my god.. This sounds like content.

Someone tried this on me actually, parked their sloop at a shrine waiting for me to go over to him. Except i was coming to give him my loot cuz i was leaving and he sunk himself instead of me lol
How does it feel to influence a video?
Me and my crew like to play in rowboats only sometimes and we use this method to store key pieces of loot that we steal from ships. Especially if there chasing after us to get there loot back. It's honestly overpowered.
I love how this started as a way to test if the statues were actually busted to hide loot but then just evolved into normal play

I think the mermaids holding your statues are a thing both for the fact that you're extremely vulnerable while doing a shrine, as well as the fact that it would be a huge pain to deal with getting the loot if you couldn't store it. Either you send the loot up as you're doing it where you would both have to worry about someone getting it while you're down and can't tell and also have to speedrun the shrine before your loot starts sinking. The other alternative would be to send all of the loot up at the end where it would basically be a more annoying version of Merchant Lost Cargo runs.
I don't have too much of a problem with the current system. It seems pretty similar to burrying a bunch of treasure on islands and getting rid of the map bundle. The biggest concern I see here is that you can do all of the shrines/treasuries before you collect. Perhaps Rare could make it so that your treasure automatically gets released when you leave the shrine/treasury, or keep the treasure in the mermaids but have it so that other crews can access the loot too once you leave.

I think the limitation should be that all other Treasury/Shrine statues will no longer store loot for you if a statue at any other Treasury/Shrine is currently storing at least 1 loot. That way you can't run multiple then come back and get loot from multiple locations all at the same time. You're forced to loot it right now and have to defend that loot while you run more, like every other activity in the game.

@For the Omnissiah maybe an even simpler solution: have all treasury mermaids share the 20 loot limit, so if you want to go get the breath of the sea on every treasury and """maximize""" your profit (i mean, time wise its a waste but still) thats ok but you're not getting everything from everywhere

Out of all the videos I watched, I came to this conclusion.
Cliff and his buddies are true pirates of the Sea Of Thieves. They take what they can and give nothing back. They’re willing to help others. Perfectly balanced between PVE and PVP.

personally i love the decision to protect loot like this. for me and my friends, all of us are pretty miserable at pvp but still really enjoy the game and still like to play it. we paid money for the game same as everyone else and i'm glad rare is doing the bare minimum to ensure players like us don't have our whole play experience ruined by other players.

But they already added that with burying treasure. Or running and selling at outposts. This is just a way to cheese it more. Having a problem holding unto loot comes to simply lack of skill. You shouldn't get rewarded for sucking...

Your a inspiration to me in PvP you consider yourself only decent but your excellent, I'm really bad and its not even a lack of experience I've been on the seas since day 1, yet I can't win a fight, and I'm usually a solo sloop so at this point I just stick to PvE options.

Like one day i felt realy bored and i was like okey im gonna play this youtube video, it's was your video that have like 1 hour and 45 mins or something like that, and i instantly fell in love. Keep this up and i hope we will met at the sea ! ;)
It works both ways. I was doing a treasury once and little did I know that another crew saw my ship parked over it and knew I was in there. So they did a drive-by and dropped two guys off who swam down, the ship apparently kept going. As soon as I finished the treasury and the vault opened the two guys who were waiting ran up behind me and killed me before I even realized they were in there. They then grabbed the expensive items, stored them for themselves, then returned to their ship. By the time they I re-spawned they were already gone, so I went to my ship expecting to battle them topside retrieving, but there was nothing on the horizon. They were gone. Their ship had kept going and was long gone by time they rejoined it. I wasn't going to camp all day waiting for them to return for it though so that was that. But yea, you're making a big deal about it. It's not completely safe and it can work against you as well.

Season 4 (the update adding those treasuries) was the only season I DIDN’T play in, and I regret it a little. I saw an unlockable crossbow sniper rifle and WISHED I sailed during that time period
I always use a harpoon row boat when solo to take loot right into the reapers hideout, saves a lot of time and running back and forth

Emphasis on “a good fight” - my boys usually let newer players be.
Most cheesey part about the Shrine Mermaids is that you can give them any loot, not just mermaid loot. If you we're being chased by a much bigger ship and you had a chest of legends you could sail past a shrine and sneakily swim your chest down to the mermaids, then fight without risk of losing it.
Likewise Burying treasure, you can bury your chest in a grassy area where the dark patch is impossible to see, screenshot your map location, then throw your treasure map overboard. This gives the enemy player literally 0 possible chance of finding your loot, and you're free to fight with no risk.
Shrine Mermaids, Burying Treasure and Portal Hopping w/ Emissary are all ways a competent crew could effectively never lose a single piece of loot and never have to fight to defend it.

I rarely do these undersea items myself... but once while on an open Brig, we came across another Brig doing a treasury.... I snuck on board and tucked... and I waited while the rest of my crew and ship sailed a little way away and hid behind the closes island... I then just waited until they came up. They were extremely cautious... it took them forever to finally pop the merm... but at that point I called my ship in and I it sailed in and attacked while I started making trouble on their ship. We eventually took them down and took their nice merm loot...
It's all about patience and waiting sometimes.
One time i was in a fight with one crew on a server after getting caught in a 4-1 at a fort. They sunk my ship at first and then i boarded their ship and hid until i got bored lol. They finished a voyage and ended up killing me. I then got my new ship and headed back in that direction and got sooo lucky finding that same crew at a shrine. So they are all under the water unaware and I (a sloop) and just taking shots at their Galleon (which had ALL of their voyage loot btw. It took me a while to take it down because of my angle trying to do it quickly lol, but right after i sink their ship and get their loot. They use their mermaid to return to their ship…. So they returned to their new ship somewhere while the mermaid loot floated right to me 😂😂😂😂😂 i messaged them thanking them for the free loot and while at first i failed, i pulled a heist even the greatest pirate legends would be proud of
someone has probably mentioned this before, but i found out the hard way that your loot isnt safe with the mermaids. the mermaid with all of your loot at the surface of the ocean can be accessed by anyone on the server. they just interact with it just like you would and take all the loot. the only difference is they dont see the purple flare from their staves. so your loot still isnt safe

I remember that one time when I stole a chest of ancient tributes and just let my boat drift away while I stashed it in a shrine I sailed past while getting chased, let the ship drift away as a decoy. I completed the shrine and fetched the stored loot.

I always stack shrines then go pick up emisey afterwards and just go pick up all the loot , and yes the loot STAYS in the mermaid while you portal hop, i also keep track of the amount of chests, skulls and gems i get so i know what emisery to pick up xD

i know i'm kinda late to the party, but i feel like a good solution would be making it so that anyone could claim the loot from the mermaid, but that it only appears when the crew returns to the surface, that way your loot could be safe while looting the shrine and you don't have to worry about carrying it up but it could still be stolen from you upon your return
I always thought everybody could steal it. So i always stacked it infront of the statue until i was done.

2 days ago I was doing the vault and my friend said someone sunk our ship. I pressed return to ship and traveled back and collected it all. It was only the vault but still pretty lucky
Today on the sea of thieves: 1 reaper flag raised, 2 idiots piloting a brigantine, 3 skeleton galleons destroyed , 4 emissary flags sold, 5 supply crates stolen, 6 player ships sunk. And many, MANY, dead pirates.
Today was a good day.
I remember when the game first came out and the unwritten rules of the sea was to never sink merchant alliance sailors
Best thing to do... Steal a Fort of Fortune key and stash at the mermaid statue. The Key disappears from the map and people think you used it. And leave your ship alone to go get the fort. After a hour or so, go back and get the key, no orange skull to warn everyone.
I started doing lost shipment voyages like a day ago and oh my god that is more profitable than anything I did before its not a hard quest and it has plenty of good loot and the profit skyrockets when u have merchant emissary flag with one voyage i managed to get it to lvl 5 like wtf and the loot sells for so much it is awesome for a solo slooper like myself I recommend trying it out
I tried grinding those out but after I complete one lost shipment voyage I always get bored 😭

The other day I stalked a sloop that was diving for mermaid shrines. While the crew was underwater I loaded their treasures onto my boat. Then I hid my ship behind a rock waiting for them to get back aboard. The moment they interacted with their mermaid I came around the corner and started blasting, sunk them and collected their stuff.
I like the mermaid, it gives them an element of security that you can subvert by laying an ambush.
Stare into the abyss long enough and the abyss gazes into you. You realized you became what you hated
I don't mind using the mermaid since the treasury and shrines are deep underwater, but you should be forced to then get your loot once you resurface.....it shouldn't allow you to stack & hoard with zero risk. That's the stupid part of this specific thing Rare made

Cliff is very modest he's at least as good as phuzzy Bond not many people would take out three different active enemy ships at the same time by themselves most people can't handle one enemy ship by themselves
The mermaid that releases the loot is only available above the shrine we can't go to an outpost bring up the loot to sell quicker trust me I've tried
last time i did one of those mermaid things i my ship was sunk and all the loot stolen and that was before reapers it sucked cause we spent so much time down there
and I and my other pirate pals get these days cause of forts is PVE reapers that just run away from a Merchant/Athena Vessel.

I agree but i dont think its that big of a deal since its not accessible outside of those underwater places and most players dont do those since its not really worth it lol...
I think the community should go harder on topics like PvP quality and balance, like for example, why does the blunderbuss still able to one shot, why getting spawn camped in your own ship still a thing or how server hopping still allowed...

instead of taking your loot, you can hop servers using a pirates life checkpoint and pick up your loot from shrine/treasury on that server

ive only really used mermaid shrines a couple times but ive never made much profit at all, (unless im doing it completely wrong) maybe a couple thousand with a grade 3 emissary but i can see the benifit of doing multiple i guess
