My childhood where have you gone???? If yugioh was more like this i would still be playing and this game would still be good as it was back then. It had the best simplicity back then and that's what made it amazing. Today's yugioh lost it's heart of what it use to be.

there was technically a ban list before the OG ban list, but it only limited the cards to 1 or 2 and didn't ban cards outright

This was the good old days to me. Still love playing some old fashioned yugioh. Even have a yugi character deck that mainly focus on getting Dark Paladin on the board. Which wasn’t out at the time when this format came about but it’s basically same concept

An interesting tidbit of information about historical 2002 Yugi-Kaiba Format is, that the european version was quite different. The starter Decks both contained 4 cards less and LOB had a couple more cards missing.

While many of the cards missing aren't necessarily great, however, there are some meta definign cards among them. Not having Pot of Greed takes away a potent staple, Neo as one of the relativley few 1700 aTK Monsters will be missed, and the Treasure chest as another 1600 ATK fiend will also be felt by the players. Hinotama, Ookazy and Hane Hane being unavailable takes interesting choices out of the format as well.
I'm pretty sure Europe was worse off due to these losses. AFAIK most of those cards got shoved into by then Spell ruler and an english LOB Reprint with the entire set made it to europe in 2004.
One other neat interaction in this format- if a Wall of Illuson is left on the field, you can attack it with a Man-Eater Bug or Trap Master to bounce them to your hand for re-use.

Which is *exactly* why you probably SHOULDN'T be playing a 3-1 defense ratio, but 2 Wall-2 Soldier/Elf.

Kayenng Thao Rule 1: Play 2 of each big Dragon Ruler and 3 of each Baby dragon ruler, and play 3 Super Rejuvination with Big Eyes and Dracossack in the Extra Deck. And Monster Reborn. Done.
Rule 2: Throw some other shit in there until you have 40 cards. You'll draw into your dragons anyway so it doesn't matter.

One thing I've learned recently is that Lord of D. had an original errata that said Dragons are not affected at all by Spells, Traps and Monster Effects which is mind blowing to me. Idk how this errata is/was treated in the format thanks to Upper Deck forgetting how to write in English on half of the cards printed.
As far as I'm aware in Yugi/Kaiba they use the immunity effect before it got the targeting errata.
It's a similar situation to what happened with Wizards of the Coast giving it's ruling on Neo Genesis Slowking in Pokemon due to it's different card text giving it a massive buff which led to it being inevitably banned back then.
@@fawfulmark2 I've seen both pre and post errata'd effects be used depending on the play group. If it is the pre-errata effect than my Neo Dragon Deck just become so much better lol! I would love to get a definitive answer on what Lord of D.'s ruling was at the time

That way you can use it in MP1 and then summon something during your battle phase to get more attacks, or just to have safety net for when you opponent has a Flip Monster
You should do HAT format. It's a diverse format that favors deck building and set 5 pass.
He doesn't need to do a HAT video because it's such a recent format; most people here played it or at least know about it.

Ok, I built a deck I don't think anyone uses. I call it Curse of Dragon Beat down. Combo is to play last will, then tribute a monster for C-Dragon, then use Last wills effect to summon out Lord of D. which protects C-Dragon from card effects like Raigeki and Dark hole (see previous errata for Lord of D.). It also runs 2 soul exchange to get it on field and tribute your opponents monsters in the process. Here's the deck list:

It's a magic card which was then renamed to a spell card that allows you to draw not one, not three, but two Yu-Gi-Oh playing cards and add them to your own hand
I think @simplyunlucky will be able to explain this card's effect in complete depth better than anyone else. it's much more complicated than we think.
I know that I'm late to say anything, but just watch the show. They tell you how pot of greed works in every episode
You have to activate pot of greed on your main phase if you use it manually. When activated, it targets the player that activated Pot of Greed. The targeted player must then pick up the top 2 cards of the deck, confirm it is indeed 2 cards to the opponent, and add it to hand, which is a term called “drawing” in card games.
This effect can be negated by all spell card negation and can be stopped by card effects that specifically stops players from using effects that perform the effect of “draw”ing.
This is the simplest explanation for Pot of Greed ever.
That depends on if you activated it from your hand, Graveyard, Deck, or your opponent's Graveyard.

I’d say even when MRD MRL PSV came out by end of 2002 already the game had obtained spicy status where there were alort of generic fun strategies that one could play . End of 2003 with the advent of LOD LON DCR made that the peak of yugioh back then imo. Once IOC came out we had broken plays that you could only pull off if you had the money

I dunno about easier, I taught my younger cousin how to play (using the new dinosaurs) and he picked up every summon pretty fast after just two games.
People greatly exaggerate how hard it is to understand Yu-Gi-Oh... it's really easy with a bit of practice (obviously never just read the rules without playing a game or 2)

Someone that goes to my LGS said that older decks could have 80 cards in them and a 7 card hand size. Older in the sense of around this time frame I believe. I was playing around this time and I remember there being no such ruling.
Originally there was no upper limit for Deck Size, but Hand size has always been capped at 6.

Is it worth it/good strategy to play slightly more than 40 cards in this format? That way you will have an advantage over 40 card players if the duel goes on for a while since they will run out of cards before you do. It's not like you need only 40 since it's a very slow format. I was thinking 43 cards since that way I will always be ahead even if I go first and use pot of greed.

Weird how Summoned Skull and Change of Heart seem to have come out as commons in the Starter Deck before being Ultra Rares at Metal Raiders.... Then again, so did Stardust back in the day coming out in the tin before it did in its set (or at the same time if you keep into account the tin's copies of the set being the only existing 1st Edition ones of it, but still).... Hmmm.
This was the funnest time of yugioh! Like for example at this time you needed to use your brains and skill to win and build a deck.

Making a deck today requires a giant brain because of the sheer amount of cards, people find new tricks and strategies every week

I ran Cannon Soldier-Last will burn during the may 2002 format as last will's first version was not once per turn so every time you tribute for cannon you get to Special summon for last will. shity errate's

I did say the may 2002 format which cannon soldier was legal in as he came out in MR the second set. This format is the LOB format referred to as Yugi/kaiba format.

You say it lasted from those times? What's with YGO formats not lasting very long at all? If it's based around cards released then I don't feel it should be called "format". It's more like it is the meta that changed, not some kind of "format".
Some kind of weird feeling shows up when I see their short time periods of being a used "format". I guess that would be questioning whether or not the format is at all relevant anymore at that point.

I really don't know where you researched, but that is not how we played back then. using three of everything in the deck didn't come out until later in the game. the only card people used at three back then were blue-eyes.
