Morning Training Session with TB Detection rat Moana

#APOPO trains African giant pouched rats to detect tuberculosis (TB) in human sputum samples. The '#HeroRATs' are low-cost and faster than conventional diagnostic methods: One TB detection rat screens 100 samples in less than 20 minutes; this would take a lab technician at a local clinic up to 4 days.
APOPO confirms all rat findings using internationally endorsed confirmation tests before we notify the clinics. This has increased the TB patient detection rate of collaborating clinics by over 40%.
Finding more patients and getting them on treatment stops the spread of TB and closes the gap of patients missed by health systems.
