- It's been a while since I uploaded an oil painting demo, so join me as I paint a nocturne of this "story" painting. Along the way, I tell you what I'm thinking, and why I'm doing what I'm doing.
Grafit Studio creates the best and highest quality photo reference packs that I use to draw and paint from. There's something here for everyone, whatever your interest. The way you teach is a lot of fun but full of good instructions at the same time. A pleasure to watch
Thanks for the comment and for watching. I'm glad you found it worthwhile. Paint on!
What a wonderful experience - watching the painting unfold and listening to the beautiful music. Thank you so much.
Great painting Steve. It's really good to see you again. And a bonus with the music which I loved!
Thanks for all you do. I have tried two of the nocturns and very happy with the results. I'm retired and having fun learning to paint. Thanks again. Steve
Bravo.
Thank you Steve! Love watching you paint!
Wow! Beautiful painting and story behind the painting! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching David. It's much appreciated! Paint On!!
Thanks for the video! The painting was awesome as usual. I love when a painting tells a story. I could just watch you paint all day haha
Thanks Josiah! Trust me, you don't wanna watch me paint all day. I know, I hafta do it...grin. 🤣
Perfect name and beautiful work! Thanks for sharing!
Oh wow, that’s great! I wasn’t sure where you were going with this, I clicked on it and didn’t read the description…it was fun to watch it come together!
I really enjoyed watching this one! Great composition! I always learn very useful techniques from you👍Thank you
Yay you're back! Good to see you working again Steve. Hope you and the family have a good holiday!
I'm watching this demo only 5 hours after it was uploaded. Couldn't be more fresh (or fresher?) Interesting brush work.
Beautiful! Thank you
Hey 👋 Steve!
Fantastic night scene with the cool colors contrasted with the warm ‘cave’ figures and fire- I was waiting for that last hit of bright fire. Wonderful. Terrific work. I just found your channel today, as I picked up plein air oil painting 2 weeks ago, and after a 45 commercial art career, I’m looking to learn and enjoy the process again. Your work is inspiring. Thanks!
Thanks Steve ..I love it!
I was reminded of various passages from 'The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons' especially the magical evenings in the kiva's.
Thanks for checking in Dave. I remember reading this for the first time. John Wesley Powell's account of exploring the Colorado and Green Rivers was so cool because they were true explorers. There aren't many areas of the world that are left unexplored, sadly.
Thank you for the lesson, you have a way to make it real for us that watch. Keep it up ❤
Beautifull colors n strokes i like it.
From the title to the cave and fire I was thinking petroglyphs and then bam there they were, very nice.😀
Super cool
The wait is over! Thanks for uploading this demo.
This is great. You utilise some really great painting techniques here. Grand job.
Really enjoyed the painting especially the petroglyphs. I was waiting for you to paint a cowboy hat on that rider! lol
Love this!
Thanks Jude!

Thanks Lisa!
Wow! That is stunning! Your work is so beautiful.
When I was a child in grade school, in the late 60’s and early70’s, there was an artist on PBS that we watched in school. He would tell a story and sketch a picture in charcoal from the story while he talked. It was the only time all of us were quiet. Lol We we’re so enraptured with what he was doing, we forgot we were at school.
Have you ever considered a Utube version of that? I think your subscribers would love it! I know I would.🐝🤗❤️
That really sounds like a winning idea Deborah, let me kick it around in my head a bit!
@@SteveAtkinsonFineArt Great! I hope it works for you. It was mesmerizing and I would love to see it again🐝🤗❤️
Incredible loved your video about a picture did you use a reference
Great video, Steve. Curious if you could please elaborate on what you meant by “lost and found edges”?
Hi Jonathan, sure, lost and found edges refer to how hard or soft the edges between objects appear. A found edge is a harder edge and appears more in focus, it demands more attention. Lost edges are when an object goes back into the shadows or has a value similar to its surrounding values. I like to blur the edges in these areas. Oftentimes, I like to allow edges to disappear completely (or become "lost"), and so have less importance and be more artistic. It also gives the eye a rest without having everything equally important. After all, if everyone is singing at the top of their lungs, no one gets heard. I hope that helps you. Paint on!
That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for explaining that. I really enjoy your videos and content. I look forward to more! Happy painting!
Is it possible to have regular videos from you, say once every 2 weeks?
Thanks Abi, I wish I could have a more regular release schedule for my videos. But my primary concern is making a living as a fine artist. This means keeping my galleries supplied with new work and finishing commissions quickly. I do my videos when I have some extra time, which isn't often enough. Between filming, editing hours of video, voice overs, and adding music, each one takes more time than I can believe. But not to worry, I have several in the works that will be released soon! Thanks for understanding and sticking with me. Make sure to subscribe and click the bell to be notified when I do release new videos.
@@SteveAtkinsonFineArt - Thanks for the explanation. I am subscribed and have the notification bell on. Looking forward to what’s coming. Thanks
Hi Steve, what will be your next project subject?
Hi Kennedy Law. I'm working on a video about a rodeo poster I did for the Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo. In it I show my process from start to finish, including preliminary concept pencils. The video is finished, I just need to do the voiceover explanation.
