    I ferment in a bucket with air lock and inside an insulated cooler that I add ice bottles as needed to maintain a temp around 19 C for my beer. For sugar wash, I just let it ride at about 23 C. I tried adding 10 g of calcium carbonate in place of oyster shells for a 6 liter wash and the pH stayed around 4 for the whole ferment and completed to 12% ABV in 10 days. This was with DADY yeast, fermax nutient and it came out very neutral and clean. In any case, the cooler keeps the bugs out and my wife happy as you can't smell the fermentation as much.

    • @OpenSourceDistilling
      @OpenSourceDistilling  Před 4 lety

      Nice, where did you pick up the calcium carbonate?
      My iSpindel are getting close enough to completion for me to do some more fermentation experiments. Sugar washes seem to ferment slower than beer and I've heard adding a little dry malt extract can expedite fermentation but I wonder if it will affect the flavor of the vodka. Can't wait to dive into more pH control and nutrient experiments.
      Cheers,
      Joey Joe Joe Jr.

      I see it's powdered. I assume it doesn't fully dissolve. Have you run into any issues with that?

    • @moorejl57
      @moorejl57 Před 4 lety +1

      @@OpenSourceDistilling No problems, it just sits on the bottom of the fermenter and dissolves in as required as the yeast attempt to drop the pH. Being powdered, I think it dissolves in a little easier than the shells might. This was my second ever sugar wash and it came out very clean and neutral. I changed too many variables from the first wash to know which change was most important, although I suspect it is the yeast and using pH control.

    Is there a way to get Ubidots to calculate and display %ABV? I know I can estimate initially and have a rough idea of where I'm going to end up but I still like to watch the numbers.

    My iSpindel's data only reaches UbiDots just around every hour (sometimes a bit longer, sometimes shorter), while the update frequency is 5 mins. And thats while it's still sitting on my desk well within reach of wifi. Any experience with this?

    • @OpenSourceDistilling
      @OpenSourceDistilling  Před 4 lety

      No I haven't. For 5 minutes you have your interval at 300 right? When it's in configuration mode what's the signal strength? You can use an phone app like "Wifi Analyzer" to see all the wifi networks and strength. I believe the iSpindel wakes up from deep sleep, tries to send data, and goes back to sleep. If the connection is bad somehow, the data won't get sent.
      All other wifi devices are working okay on the network?

    Thankyou. Subscribed. Its always good to see what cloud options are out there. I think for the time being I'll stick with influxdb and grafana.

    • @OpenSourceDistilling
      @OpenSourceDistilling  Před 4 lety

      I was looking at grafana a while back. Does the free version have many limitations? Do you install it locally and then just connect data sources to it for reporting/graphing? Thanks for watching!

    • @NetworkGeek280
      @NetworkGeek280 Před 4 lety +1

      @@OpenSourceDistilling In a DIY scene you wont need any enterprise Grafana features and yes, I'm running local. In terms of integration with ispindel I noticed it supported both influxdb and mqtt. Given I run Hassio I would probably point the ispindel to my mosquito broker integrated with Hassio. Hassio then pushes out sensor values to influxdb which I can report on using Grafana. A more efficient flow would probably be to push direct to influxdb and Hassio could pull the latest values from there. All open source. Love it.

    Ubidiots is only allowing me 3 widgets for 1 iSpindel. Am I missing something or have they changed the free option?

    • @OpenSourceDistilling
      @OpenSourceDistilling  Před 3 lety

    If you use the stem/free ubidots account, you're only limited to 3 dashboards. Is there a reason they are separate dashboards? Can you just do multiple variables?

    • @OpenSourceDistilling
      @OpenSourceDistilling  Před 4 lety

      Yes you can, but be aware there is a limit of 10 widgets per dashboard. So you can get up to 30 widgets over 3 dashboards in total. If you only have 3 devices that should be plenty.

    When the fruit flies get really bad around my 55 gallon fermenter, I use a 20v dewalt portable shop vac and suck em up.
    Another way is to leave out a pint Fores jar with a plastic bag over the top and rim screwed down. Poke 3 dozen holes in the plastic with a fork. The flies go in and drown in the fores. Dump it after the next weeks run and repeat.
    Cheers!

    • @OpenSourceDistilling
      @OpenSourceDistilling  Před 4 lety +1

      Nice. I do something similar but with some sugar water and bread yeast in a jar with plastic film. The fermentation draws them through the holes and they don't escape. I think you can use a bit of beer, fores, probably many other things. Thanks for sharing and watching to the end!

    • @OpenSourceDistilling

    Dont waste your money or considerable time trolling through GitHub forums etc trying to get this junk to work if there is a slight deviance of the setup. I dont have a PC connected to WIFI, everything is hardwired. Connecting Ispindle to your actual router is a mammoth pain in the ass and totally unreliable. And as for the phone, fuck me how easy is this shit to have into.
