  • Designing For is a series which looks at a level in gaming, and analyzes a theme central to that level's design. In this episode, we take a look at the last level of Donkey Kong Country 2, and how it uses familiarity and encouragement to foster a sense of accomplishment.

Aw yeah, my DKC2 request got through! Excellent job, guys, really makes me look at Animal Antics in a whole new light

It was one of the ideas I was planning on doing anyway, but your request did bump it up in priority.

Beating Animal Antics on Barralax mode (no DK barrels) is one of my biggest gaming achievements. Imagine needing to do Squitter and Squawks' parts back to back with only a single hit of leeway.
The first time I got through Skquawks' part alive (again -- NO DK BARRELS!), I'd completely forgotten about Rattly's part.
I choked on one of the final jumps, landing on the spikes, and had to do the whole sequence over again.
Eventually, I did it. "Designing for Accomplishment" is right.

The editing is a big step up from the first episode! Not to belittle the first ep or nothin' - the actual content of it was quite strong to begin with and made me actually understand and appreciate why the Gradius games are good - but the little bit of extra editing at the beginning and end of this episode does a lot to make it feel a ton more professional.
Aside from that... yeah, this definitely got me to rethink Animal Antics. I always thought it was a neat-o gauntlet that came towards the end of Donkey Kong Country 2, but the actual strength of the level is a bit more subtle than I realized!

I remember playing this over and over and over again. Now it’s so easy. Once you master it. You never forget.

Amazing to watch a review from someone who seems to be passionate and genuinely enjoy the work of what they're reviewing. Takes aspects that I haven't seen any other reviewer even consider. Extra references really added to it, and shows the great effort put in. Keep up the good work!

Another solid episode! Really enjoyed the lead-in and the episode as a whole - really got me thinking about Animal Antics in a way I hadn't considered before. And you know, it really wouldn't be the same if that last section WASN'T there.

3:50 I remember struggling so much against the Squawks Section as a kid and I also remember the exhilarating feeling when I finally beat it.

Based on "Designing for Accomplishment" and "Donkey Kong Country 2", my first thought was Toxic Tower (which definitely has a similar design with the drop in difficulty on the Squawks section), but Animal Antics seems apt. I've never actually attempted it all that much, but this bumped it up on my list of things to revisit.

    • @DesigningFor
      @DesigningFor  Před 7 lety +2

Toxic Tower is very much like an earlier version of Animal Antics, with its sharp rise in difficulty, its dropoff, and its use of Animal Buddies. I expect that was intentional, seeing as Screech's Sprint has so much in common with it as well.

Animal Antics is probably the best level in the entire classic DKC trilogy 🍌🍌🍌
I consider the classic trilogy the best non-metroidvania platform series ever made in history
And I conclude that DKC2 is the best non-metroidvania 2D platformer in gaming history,
    surpassing the entire 2d Mario series/games. DKC2 = PERFECT!!! 🦍🐒🦏🐍🐬🕷🦜
A titanic work of art, colossal, inside an old 32 Mbits/4MB cartridge, from the nostalgic 1995... ❤

4:28 just wanted to quickly point out, Squawks' ranged attack are little yellow eggs (for some reason) not nuts. Love your videos btw.

The next dkc game needs to bring back atleast 3 more animal buddies. And also bring back the whole Kong family even if they ain't all playable
