if i remember right, they create two different timeline branches to guarantee that they stay free forever. one timeline get's reset and goes back to the loop, but the other stays like this with sans in control and the player has no access to it.

For example, Asriel's final form, when you see the infinity in his DEF and ATK - it's not actual infinity, in the files he has a clear number - 9999 in both. GASTER HAS 666666 DEF AND 666666 ATK. So yeah the fact that Sans was holding against him is impressive, not the other way around.

Dude there were 2 endings, pretty sure you didn't click either do it automatically chose the reset one. There is actually an ending where they don't reset
nah, it got across the message really well, if your world is just a videogame then you either go with whatever the player wants or risk them deleting you cause they think your copy is bugged. it's the perfect ending, the player still has their copy while they smuggled out a different world where nothing was ever reset.
There is another ending in wich they continue, the buttons were functional, but you know what happened to that. In the ending they make a copy of the world for the player and continue on their own. That way both endings are valid.
