Hi Sean - great video! Hopefully you realize that the convex hone moves your bevel geometry in the exact opposite direction to your two layers of tape :) If the steel holds that edge, I think you'll notice a difference in the shave. Cheers!

@@seanstapelfeld Even if the Gold Dollar can hold the edge, it is unlikely the grain size in the steel will allow you to push the refinement. As for videos, I was planning to do one tonight, but rum and a cigar are calling my name. I'll probably get it done tomorrow, though.

Great work Sean 👏 i can clearly see the curve on your stone , convexing the bevel is a complex business, coping with the full Jarrod methods i found wearisome ,all the different ,'wheel sizes' on different stones 😮.

hehe the tomato after setting the bevel is just a treat for doing some good work... yes the convex business and maintaining them convex seems to be a little wearisome but it might be harder doing it by hand like some of the guys are doing. cheers my friend, making me a coffee and going to watch your shave wooohooo

These days, I seldom backbevel all the way to the edge.
I mostly like to start with some sort of established apex and backbevel about 50-75% to the edge, then re-refine the apex.
As you go along you may find that a little extra focus will always be necessary towards the heel. Many times my stroke starts with a leaning to the heel before a making rocking transition to the toe at about halfway point. The heel never gets the same cross stroke action of the rest of the razor. Circles are an option for that area tool.
You can easily work the backbevel at any time without touching the edge. Unlike abrasive progressions, isolating and segmenting are possible. Use this to your advantage to give the shave piece what it is asking you for.

Thank you Bill! I noticed just today what you were trying to tell me about the heel the other day. I took your recommendation and gave some extra love to the heel. I will try to not fully apex with the short diameter stone next time and just stop shy before apexing… since I’m new to this I was finding a hard time understanding when I was near the apex and when I wasn’t but I’m getting the hang of it slowly. Do you apex with the second longer diameter stone or does your edge finally come together in your last stone in the progression? Cheers and happy Father’s Day my friend!

I have apexed razors at the 3 diameters I use. Since they are coarser stones it can be less work later if you are back a bit. When you get in the area of a balanced hollowing, don’t be afraid to go back and forth on the curves. It can move around pretty easily and helps with blending.

Hi Sean. Nice. I am new to this convex way of honing. How do you lap a convex shaped stone? Thx have a good one
In my case I bought a plate sold by Jarrod that has the shape I want for the two stones dimensions. If I put sandpaper on it and shape parallel to one axis it gives me the really curved stone and if I change the angle then it gives me a less curved stone on the long axis but I know there are guys doing this that do it by hand hehe I bought the plate because I’m lazy hahaha but anyways my friend this is just for fun, I will still hone thicker grinds the flat way.
