New Ford Raptor Gen 2 Long Term Ownership In-Depth Review

  • The Ford Raptor has already become an icon in the pickup truck world. With the debut of the Gen 2 Ford Raptor in 2017 came many update and changes...the biggest being the departure from the V8 and transition to the V6 Ecoboost and 10 speed transmission.
    When shopping for my new Ford Raptor I watched as many videos as I could and did my research. However there just weren't any videos with true ownership experience. That's why I decided to make this video. Also, many of our 221B Tactical fans and followers have been asking for it.
    Disclaimer: I am not a youtube video professional. Just threw this together for the fans and followers who've been asking about the truck they see in all the pics and videos. I'm 100% open to tips for future videos like this. Appreciate all the support. Hit that thumbs up and subscribe! Thanks!

    The best review I have seen on the tube. Just purchased a 2020 Raptor in magnetic grey, fully loaded with the bead-lock wheels, have neighbors that have never spoken to me stop to ask about it. I agree with every nit you picked, when driving home from the dealer I thought I was going to rear end someone because of the brakes, you really have to get on them to stop, otherwise I love everything about it. Keep the vids coming!

    Thank you!!! I’m waiting on my 2020 Leadfoot to arrive and this was a great review about the ins and outs of ownership. I’m hoping the new suspension in the 2020 addresses the squirly back end issue. The brakes were a concern as I have a Lincoln MKT with inadequate brakes as well.

    This is the absolute best review of the Raptor I have seen yet!You mention things that other reviews totally miss.I’m presently looking at a 2017 Raptor with 24,000 miles on it in Blue. I really like the truck and for its size it really is pretty fast.You mentioned the tire size and stone chips on the body.Now that really bothers me.Any way thanks for the very informative review.I will be watching for future reviews.....5 STARS....

  • @ace4059dds
    @ace4059dds Před 4 lety +3

    Very informative and good review. I used ForScan and changed several settings in the computer such as choice of DRL’s , enabled police mode, turned off double horn honks when exiting vehicle with engine running and key fob in pocket , displaying engine and transmission temperature numerically above dash gauges, putting heated ventilated seat and heated steering wheel icon controls on Sync 3 display screen, auto fold mirrors, auto relock enable, etc. The Raptor Forum has lots of info about this and much more. I also installed Baja Design fog lights and backup lights. Added light bar above front bumper. Installed Diamondback bed cover. You are correct about comfort and fun factor. I’ve had several “luxury” cars (Lexus, Lincoln etc.) and sports cars(Corvettes) and my Raptor is the most comfortable and fun vehicle I have owned. Yes, brakes could be better but I’ve never had trouble stopping (just have to apply enough pressure to brake pedal) and I’ve had a little rear end hop around rough fast curves but nothing scarey. My Corvette’s rear end hops more than the Raptor. Also. I don’t find parking a problem, but I used to have a F350 Powerstroke CrewCab Long bed so the Raptor seems small compared to that. If someone is just used to driving a smaller car then yes the width and height of the Raptor may be a little intimidating at first. But since I don’t want door dings I usually park way out away from other cars and inevitably when I return there always seems to be someone parked next to me. I think Raptors attract onlookers. I get lots of thumbs up from other drivers. Especially from other pickup truck drivers.

    Put in Baja mode, then shift into 2wd with dash knob,put steering in sport mode,turn off traction control and you will have best performance/fun driving experience. Baja keeps turbos spooled up so virtually no turbo lag. Of course your mpg goes down drastically but much better than Sport mode IMO and shifts don’t seem as violent . Great for donuts in the sand also!

I have a lifted F-150 XLT Super Crew that doesn't do that; and mine has the Mustang V-8. This was by far, the most informative video on this truck that I've seen. (Weak brakes, car wash limitations, parking spaces; never mentioned by other reviewers.) I'll probably just go with the Roush F150 Lariat Super Crew, instead.

    This is outstanding! Thank you very much! I learned a lot.
    I just purchased a used 2020 raptor with 13,000 miles.
    Only two things I don’t like so far. In normal mode that 10 speed transmission shifts way too much. For me it’s smooth, no issues. Just too much shifting at 30, 40 miles an hour cruising speed. . And yes, I hate that it turns off at a stoplight! They have that set up completely backwards. It should automatically be off and if I want it on then I can turn it on.
    Thank you for the heads up on the back end possibly jumping out going over bumps. I felt that issue a few times years ago when I had a Dodge Ram as well.
    I have a few less options also, my auto start Hass to be done with the Ford pass app which is kind of cool because I can start the car from the other side of the country if I want to . But I can’t ever think why I would need to. I have heated seats but no cooled seats. And no trailer back up or trailer brakes that I could manually engage. I do have an expensive hard bed cover, and I also have the aftermarket fog lights that when turned on is like freaking daylight! It’s awesome! I can turn on two fog lights, for lights, or all six.
    I’ve owned over 20 vehicles, mustangs, custom ordered Trans Am, ram trucks, back in the Day full-size Chevy blazer, this is by far the most comfortable for me. I will say not the smoothest I’ve ever owned, but definitely the most comfortable to drive.
    Yes, this is exactly what I was looking for in a video. Well done! And thank you very much.

    • @Maynardd
      @Maynardd Před 2 lety

      Also, still trying to get used to the sound. I can appreciate they tried to make a decent exhaust so that little six-cylinder can sound deep. But I’m used to the big V-8’s with aftermarket exhaust. It’s growing on me though.

    Great video and review. I love my 2019 raptor, but I have similar gripes as you. First and foremost, losing the back-end of the truck while hitting bumps on a turn (specifically on highways) has happened to me multiple times, and is a terrifying experience. I am glad other raptor owners are aware of this. I also agree with the issue of brakes. It is a 6k lb truck and should come with Brembos (or another high-performance brake with 6 pistons). Overall, great review - thanks!

    This was the most informative/useful Raptor video I've seen. I was torn between the getting the 2018 Lariet and slapping a Roush package on it, or the 2018 Raptor in Leadfoot. Going with the Raptor but will certainly change the brakes.

    I get 14 mpg average. Best was 19 mpg Hwy. 12 mpg around town ( real actual fuel hand calculated mpg).Dash “lie-o-meter” showed about 2 mpg better than “actual mpg”. You can go into engineering test mode and adjust calibration for mpg .I got mine to about 0.1 mpg accuracy on dash readout compared to actual mpg. Google it and Raptor forums have instructions on how to do it.

    • @221btactical

    Excellent review. I have a dilemma, I'm planning on trading in my 2017 Toyota Rav4 Limited Hybrid which the only positive thing is the gas mileage. I have NEVER seen a review from a guy that lives in a city like NYC where I live at, I would like to know how bad is the gas spending money. How many miles you drive your Raptor every day and how is it with the gas, also the size of the truck, do you have any issues with it at all? I really want to get a Raptor but those factors make me hesitate to whether getting one or not. Please help me with any ideas. Thank you and keep the good work.

    • @221btactical
      @221btactical  Před 4 lety

      Gas mileage in city is about 13-14. I do about 30-40 miles per day. Big tank so it lasts a while. As for parking, the 360° camera system is a must a makes parking a breeze. However, small city spots are not your friend. You will need wide spots. Truck isn’t terribly long but it’s wide. I’m in NYC all the time. It’s a pleasure to drive but you better be ready to fuel it up. Idling eats gas in this truck too.

  • @knifeguysinstagram3392

    just curious. have you ever really gotten 720 miles on a tank? if it's a 36 gallon tank, even with an early fill up at 650... have you calculated the mileage average? 20mpg would put you at 720. I'm looking to get a gen 3 and I'm hoping that tank doesn't shrink. lol

    @221B Tactical Regarding the rear-end bounce: The blue Fox shocks makes me think you have a 2018. I wonder if the new orange Live suspension on the 2019 changed that. Also, could a simple change of tire pressure mitigate the problem? It might be worth trying.

    My 2018 Gen2 would shift so hard in normal mode at times it felt like someone hit me from behind. Ford said it was normal. I disagreed. I traded mine for the F150 V8 Platinum for now. I know they can reset the transmission and have it relearn but I would just be right back where I started. Hopefully Ford can smooth that out in future models. I look forward to getting back into a Raptor again some day.

    Having owned different types of trucks through the years ans currently owing a 2019 Ford Raptor (all blacked out). I've lost the rear end in every truck I have ever own, from bad weather to just hitting bad bumps in high speeds the worst one has to be the trucks with leaf springs. I traded in a 2017 Ram Hemi and that truck almost never did that.
