  • Trazodone is a commonly prescribed sleep aid. It was first designed to treat depression but has been found to be more useful in sleep. In this video we will go over the most common side effects, how to appropriately take it and what are the most concerning affects that can happen that you need to be aware of. It can be a great medication for some but for others it may not be as effective. Make sure you watch before going on this medication so you can be informed.
Sleep aids are just that, an aid. There are a lot of other things that you should be doing to try and get a good nights sleep other than relying on a medication.

I've been on Trazodone for 7 years now and wish I had been prescribed it earlier. I had such bad insomnia and anxiety before, I had trouble keeping a job and relationships. Now I have a good career and I am so content with my life. I hate the ridicule I receive from people though, when I tell them I take a prescription drug for anxiety. Too many people don't realize that some people need medications, they think doctors push these drugs on us but that is not the case at all.

It is also a prescription drug so I don’t see why they wouldn’t hire or would fire you even if they knew you were on it. I’m not well informed on the issue though so I can’t say for sure. @@BonnieHaynes-gg4nk It’s hard to know with whom it’s safe to share medical information. May I suggest that you don’t. Unless they know all of your entire medical history, you will get tons of useless, unwanted information from well meaning people.
I found the hardest part of having a disability was learning to trust myself, and stop listening to the abundant advice of others. Sharing details with others is rarely necessary, and seldom helps. I stick with expressing my boundaries, and even then, I keep it to a bare minimum.
Only recently have I figured out how to deflect all the well meaning advice, with phrases like, “hey that’s interesting,” or “thanks I’ll try to look into that,” before quickly changing the subject. It’s hardest when I’m feeling vulnerable and really want a chance to explain myself, or just want a chance to download my feelings. But that stuff is for therapy or journaling. Especially when I feel my problems or feelings are being dismissed or misrepresented or that I’m being judged harshly. It’s hard not getting sucked in.
I am lucky enuf to be married to a doctor, and I can share a lot with her. But a decade ago she also talked me into having a surgery, that ended up quite badly. Since then I’ve learned I can trust her to listen to my feelings, but not accept advice. I found a great therapist who specialized in disabilities, who was willing to just listen and not judge, and that made all the difference for me.
So there is my unsolicited advice. You might want to ignore mine too!

I only took 2 nights. The 1st a.m. I awoke extremely groggy,. The 2nd night i awoke extremely groggy. I was dizzy but decided to tqke my daily walk of 3-4 miles. After I was half finished, I found myself getting more dizzy but continued and kept going faster on flat ground. While trying to stop, I stumbled and fell resulting in bumps and bruising. My husband picked me up and took my blood pressure which was low. I laid down for the day and was dizzy for the rest of the day. I was starting out 50 mg. My Dr. recommended to begin taking 1/2 a pill. I'm leery of using it again.

If you have a family history of bipolar and think you escaped the family curse, like I did, be very careful with this medication. Taking the prescribed dose sent me into a month long manic episode, which I had never experienced before then. Now I split the 50mg pills in 4, taking only a quarter pill when the insomnia is really bad. I only take a couple times a month, or a week, depending what's going on, but definitely don't take nightly as prescribed. Possibly due to my genetic risk of bipolar, possibly Bp2 though never officially diagnosed, 1/4 of one pill works really well for sleep as well as a gentle antidepressant with no side effects.

Trazadone works great to help me stay asleep all night, 7-9 hours. It doesn’t make me sleepy, however. If I take it, but don’t get in bed and close my eyes, I don’t notice it’s effects at all. My insomnia is from chronic pain, which causes me to toss & turn.
I try not to use it every night. I’m retired, so I can live off 3-5 hours of sleep, and take naps. It’s nice that it’s not addictive and I can chose when I need it and when I don’t.

After 17 years of trying different medications for depression and some PTSD issues, nothing worked. My doctor gave me this for insomnia and after taking it, I noticed a difference almost right away. Imagine my surprise that it wound up helping me a lot. I had no idea it was for depression too when I started taking it. The racing thoughts at bedtime stopped, I sleep better, and I have more motivation and energy. Trazodone finally gave me some hope, since I'd really thought nothing was ever going to help me. There are a few side effects, like dry mouth at first, some unintentional weight loss, and sometimes morning grogginess/oversleeping. All these are very mild and not a problem, esp when compared to how I was before. I'm glad doctors still prescribe it and I hope more consider it for issues that don't respond to SSRIs or more 'typical' anti-depressants.

I finally started 5mg of Lexapro 3 weeks ago and it seems to be helping so I’ll move to 10 mg after I feel I have stabilized on 5 mg so that I have a better chance of knowing how it is working when the dosage changes. My Trazadone says to take one or two at bedtime as needed but in the video he says it’s a SSRI so I’ve got to do some more research. My Dr clearly answered me that I can take these two medications together so I guess I’ll try and have some trust.

I've been taking Trazodone for 30 years; 300 mg. No complaints as a sleep aid. For me, if I have a snack first and then take it. It's way more effective. Also with me, the effectiveness lasts exactly 4 hours.
But now I am in the process of weaning myself off of it. One side effect that Trazodone has is the heart arrhythmia the Doc spoke of-- "Prolonged QT " I am also on Methadone, have been for 7 years now. First started on it to help me with opiate addiction. I have a very bad spine now, doctors can't operate and none of their pain relieving processes like SCS and pain pump. So for now, I can get some pain relief from the Methadone. If I went to a higher dose of methadone, I got that Prolonged Qt thing. So all in all, that's why I am quitting Trazodone. Hopefully, I will be able to increase the methadone. I will get EKG's to make sure.

I have a very heightened sense of smell while on it, and 2. If im half asleep and open my eyes to either go to the restroom or get some water (this happens mostly when i take the trazodone, only had it happen maybe 2 or 3 times my whole life, its just magnified with trazodone) i sometimes will start hallucinating someone standing at the foot of my bed, or something crawling up my wall, it mostly pertains to whatever is a big stressor in life for me! Other than that, it’s been a life saver, sleeping less than 2 hours doesnt do too well with a driving job!

A side effect not mentioned in the video is it can prevent ejaculation (in men, of course). I noticed this and was fearful at first that my under control prostate cancer had taken a turn for the worse. Then I found out about this side effect and I was relieved to learn.

Some antidepressants have been prescribed to men to treat premature encores because of how the drugs have historically induced dysfunction in women. It's like they channeled it and put it to some positive use. But there are some side effects out there that can't be put to good use

For me? Trazadone was given to me for depression, and it turned me into a zombie, I actually lost friends. I talked really slow and I was depressed from chronic migraines. The 2 year headache was from my high estrogen level, and the first symptom of breast cancer. For insomnia, I read comments and it works for that, I am glad because I thought it was the worst drug....ever.

First let it be stated that I am neurodivergent. I have PTSD, ADHD, and am autistic. I say this because having a differing neurological landscape, I believe, matters a lot in terms of my personal experience. I was prescribed trazodone for sleep and took it only once. I felt as if sleepiness were a sort of helmet. But there was within my mind a sense of nervousness, fear, and anxiety accompanying the sleepiness. This seems counter intuitive, but it was my experience. I was informed of this before I took it, so being aware that I could feel that way as a side effect helped me find a solution. I paired it with 1 mg of Xanax and it did the trick. But I won't be taking trazodone again.

I have to pair trazadone with lorazepam…not ideal and helps. If i were younger I’d exercise and do other things like i used to and in older age just anything to survive within my lessening capacities.

Bro its so annoying you read 10 positive comment about anxiety etc and then one guy "it made everything worse". IF IT MADE EVERYTHING WORSE WHY DID YOU TAKE IT FOR 20 YEARS? Excuse me but clearly something is unreflective of the medication in this comment. Did you develop these problems after 1, 5, 10, 20 years? What is your general health like? How can you know that this medication caused these effects over a timespan of 20 years. Literally anything else including aging itself could cause these effects. For all i know you could be a fat alcoholic. You don't start taking these kind of pills at age 10 and you mostly didn't took them until age 20-30 so of course you get worse memory if you are like 50.. and even if you make it seem like its a nightmare medication. Fatigue syndrome.. ruins your memory.. in what sense? You can't remember what you ate for breakfast 2 weeks ago? Worsens your anxiety, how? If you gonna write a review then please be specific and not just write useless information that prevents other people from taking it. I honestly doubt you got any of these symptoms from this stuff, its literally ALL age related illnesses or simply caused by bad/lazy life choices. If you continued taking it for 20 years nonetheless then you are just dumb.

High dose for anxiety but low dose for seniors with insomnia. I have an Rx for 25 mg to take as needed. I occasionally take one an hour before bedtime and its effect only lasts about 5 hours so I feel rested but not groggy in the morning. Side effects are most likely at high dosage. But before I consider taking this drug, I first use 1 mg melatonin or 100 mg magnesium 1 hour before bedtime. They are effective for a natural sleep while Trazadone results in Very Deep sleep!

  • @coldisle
    @coldisle Před 7 měsíci +2

I’m usually very tolerant of medications, but trazadone…prescribed as a possible solution for my insomnia, was a problem. And the “problem” has happened ever time I’m inclined to take too big a dose. 150mg seems to help somewhat for sleep, but if I need to get up and pee (as I do frequently) I have literally caught myself passing out and being completely disoriented. It may very well help, but I think you have to find a balance between efficacy and crossing the line and going overboard. Taken in too big a dose, it is a very powerful med. it’s tempting to take too big a dose when you’re so completely desperate to try and sleep, but…and maybe it’s just me…we’re all different…be VERY careful getting up at night.
