Reverb addict Mark Speer and badass bassist Laura Lee met with Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger before their ultra-hip, sold-out show at Nashville’s Basement East. Speer and Lee took the crew through their non-conventional approach to nuevo-vintage tones.
Mark Speer tours with a single guitar: his 2001 Fender Classic Series ’70s Stratocaster. Speer hot-rodded the Strat with DiMarzio Cruiser pickups in the neck and bridge as well as extra-large frets and a TUSQ saddle and string trees. This Strat stays strung with D’Addario Chrome flatwound (.042-.032-.024-.016-.012-.010) strings. Amazingly, Speer has played the same (almost) round Jim Dunlop Green (.73 mm) Tortex pick for years.
Laura Lee’s main axe is her 2009 SX Custom Handmade J-style bass that’s been upgraded with DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups and strung with D’Addario Chrome flatwound strings.

It took me weeks to get it.. The key moment is at 11:58 where Marc says about the DS1: "No distorsion, NO TONE". That's where his "Wurlitzer" kinda tone comes from: HIGH tone from the wha, into the LOW tone of the dist. Magic. (sorry my wife, doesn't give a damn about it so I had to tell you guys...)
😂😂😂
Appreciate it!
magnusocksen
I relate to the phrase in that parentheses on a spiritual level.
Lol I relate so hard to the wife part
you are not alone
hahaha
One pick, one guitar, old strings, lots of stock, no texas sound, no dist, no fuss. Gear heads get so mad. I love it!
And let's not forget the wig!
@Mykhedelic ***** - But just as they're talking about that "only one guitar" stuff, I can clearly see another Strat's headstock in the background!?
@@mightyV444 Well, they're a touring and-- you've gotta have a back up (or the improv REALLY gets cookin.') I wouldn't call myself a gearhead by any stretch, but I've got a ton of pedals and guitars. But truth be told, 1 guitar, old strings and a few pedals and I'm gold. If I hadn't become enamored with fuzz, delay, reverb and (for good measure) a phaser, I could almost be this guy...
@@mykhedelic6471 - He'd probably meant "Only *one* guitar" as in "I don't need another, different guitar as this one's giving me all the sounds I need", yes. ;-)
@@mightyV444 A good Strat can bring peace to the universe.
I'm a 65 yr. old hard-rock guitarist and this little band is one of the best things to come along in a very long time.
They are pretty big now
Go see them live if you haven’t already. They’re amazing.
Very true been guitar play 30+ year this band is awesome there own tone sweet
Agree 100% I love this group. Probably the most down to earth band around. Real people....love them.
Love the Khru, a true breath of fresh air, so rare in the music industry of today
Band takes a minimalist approach - “They’re trying too hard” ; Band uses elaborate equipment setup - “They must be compensating for their lack of talent”. Welcome to the CZcams comments section, where there’s always someone with an inferiority complex with a comment to share.
DlNG DlNG DlNG!
And there's always one guy sitting in his basement commenting on the comments section, feelin' all superior and shit for his perceived lack of judging others. Yet, the hypocrisy endures.

CZcams comments are a reflection of society. Some nice folks, some morons, and the usual assortment of mixed nuts.
Yup. Angus Young's such a "try hard".
For those going for this tone at home, very important to consider:
1. His pick ups are actually dimarzio pro tracks (DP-188s), not cruisers. He personally clarified this on a Reddit AMA some time after this was recorded.
2. The always-on toe-down wah will be wayyy too bright with regular round wound strings. Flats are darker which offset the trebly wah. The pick ups are darker as well, so they play a key role here too. Amp at V4, T5, B8
3. His DS-1 knob settings (0-0-10) are actually genius. Too many guitarists use so much dirt (drive/dist) and don’t rely enough on volume (level) to hit that speaker hard to get a nice break-up. Experienced players you know & love with great tone are using much less DRIVE than you think and are using more VOLUME. So try this 0-0-10 method out with your OD pedal(s) and go from there.
4. Don’t overlook his compressor settings. Notice how he has output all the way up and sensitivity all the way down. This wasn’t mentioned in the video, but this allows him to achieve incredible dynamic range and sensitivity with the attack of his right hand and adjusting his volume knob. Play lightly, sounds soft and nice. Dig in, and you get that full loud crunchy tone. Try this with your comp pedal if it’s a similar type, where you’ve got two knobs: one basically for volume and the other for blend.
nice!
I love khruangbin.. Laura Lee is one of the reasons I wanted to start playing bass! Just bought one last week, and my amp is coming today
Cooool... Hope you'll have fun
Awesome, enjoy!
kick some ass!..and remember..dont ever play for anyone but yourself.. first and foremost
Congrats to you, sista! Enjoy yourself and don't stop learning.
Ah! Girl sammmme. Hows it coming along??
Finally!!! An unpretentious guitarist, who doesn't pretend that vintage guitars are superior to modern guitars, and is not afraid to admit that he can't stand Stevie Ray Vaughn's sound! A breath of fresh air!!!!!
Uses a reissue tho
@@ernestpetu5691And?
@@ernestpetu5691
One he just randomly bought because it was a strat, not because it was a reissue.
Stevie Ray was great and humble and the very definition of not pretentious, this dude pretends be can play
@@curtrodi wouldn't go to any Houston venue and say that -- Mark Speer is one of the most prolific players of the modern era.
Story of the wigs: Mark and Laura Lee were already well known musically, in their hometown of Houston, when they started out as Khruangbin with DJ. They saw Khruangbin as a new start, in a sense, in their music careers. They decided to wear wigs as a diguise, so people wouldn't recognize them easily. They've kept the wigs, as it's a part of who they are as a band. Plus, it'd be odd if they abruptly stopped wearing them. They look quite different without them. I've also read in a forum that the wigs aid in their getting to the merchandise table easier- they can simply pop the wigs off, walk through the crowd, and get to where they need to be. I saw them in Asheville and Laura Lee was sitting outside without her wig. The wigs are a part of their style, but also gives them some freedom, in my opinion.
Simon Björkman Not that I know, but I don't know too much about their heritage. Laura Lee's grandfather was Mexican-American, but that's the most I know :)
Hey, but there's a single photo that shows Laura and Mark without the wigs? Just curious lol :)
Carlo Gigantini There are a couple that I've seen via Instagram. Laura Lee currently has short, blonde hair. She's stunning! Mark has dark brown hair. They do look different!
Carlo Gigantini Haha, oh, you're bound to fall in love! Message me on Instagram and I can send you links to a couple posts of her without her wig. I think that's the easiest way to do it. My IG is gassyyetclassy. And no obligations to follow me, Lol, I know this is for Laura Lee purposes ;)
Ok, i'll do now. My nick is on Instagram is "carlogiga"
I love that they're using average stuff and making killer music.
guy said " things just gettin weirder"
the radical kindness Just goes to show it’s not about the gear. Ppl get too caught up in brands and forget about the creative, music side. This was indeed refreshing to see.
people need to also realise that not everything that isn't high end does automatically suck. there is so much good stuff out there especially these days
Their gear is very respectable. But I agree, it's nice to see musicians who can limit themselves to a smallish amount of gear.
that "average gear" is top tier here in my country lol..
I "taste the battery" lol this cat is a trip
Try it with a 9 volt. It tingles.
lol "here's that SRV tone... which I f*cking hate!" legend!
i love that quote! LOL! but id take srv any day before clapton, cant stand that shit!
Average Joe yea that freaking glassy fat in between sound
Mark Wright I don't think he meant it as disrespect...I think it's moreso that the stevie clones have beaten that horse to death and back. I tend to agree, i think we've all heard enough strats in neck position through a tube screamer enough for multiple lifetimes.
Mark is also from Texas isn’t he? He has likely seen A LOT of Texas blues SRV clones.
@@kevinlebrun2307 it's the in between positions he's talking about, position 2 & 4 which i don't like either but I love strat sound, position 1,3,5.no need of the rest.
Funniest RRD I've seen. Reminds my of an interview where Ray Charles was behind a mixing console mixing his music, the interviewer asked him, "How do you know what those lights are doing?" "I don't care what they doin'", he replied.
Mark has one of the more interesting approaches to a rig I've ever seen. Pretty darn basic, but applied in totally unique way. Love this.
Very, very unique. He doesnt chase any other sounds, he just does his thing.
@@ShadowDrake102 not really. Hendrix,Isley..all influences
Ya not a phony simple like Jack Whites approach which is very calculated and deliberate.
I watch this once a week and feel better about the future.
I love this guitarist. He uses everything at his disposal so creatively. He’s not giving him rules he’s just following his ears, truly focusing on the music. Love it
They are going to be talking about Mark Speer's approach to guitar playing well into the future. The man knows how to fully utilize his instrument to achieve mood and tone, effortlessly. The dude's a beast. Love Laura Lee as well.
uh, it's cool he is bringing back an old style, def not of the future
@@RocknJazzer They didnt say the style was "of the future".
@@tradingstuff2120 semantics aside, I meant while he and the band have a nice style as I love the orig 70s sound so appreciate them bringing aspects of that back to greater attention in the last 5ish years, bands that gain attention from a throwback sound usually have their moment as a trend, but as non originators are usually not mentioned in the future when discussing said style/genre/era, so I doubt few internet musicologists will speak of him/them in the same sentence as curtis mayfield etc when talking about 60s 70s instrumental soul psych jam music or whatever you want to call it (thai funk, etc) except as a footnote like "the style had a brief revival in interest the late 2010's early 2020's by bands such as Khruangbin etc". I dig Mark+the band and everything about them for taking the chance and working hard to bring back my beloved 70s crossover style music, but going fwds a decade or more I doubt they will be but a footnote, and thats fine, thats how genres and eras and trends work, doesnt negate at all how great he and they are, just is what it is. Yeah I take this stuff pretty seriously as a 70s music geek and musician similarly playing retro styles long before they were cool, when they were cool, and after they were cool. Basically I dont care about if any older styles of music are cool or not at any given time, I will keep listening and playing and supporting said music and bands at all times as I have done the past 3-4 decades, and back then it was the peak of being uncool...so uncool it was actually cool long after the fact, lol etc etc.
This bassist is really good..Listen to their albums shes got one of the grooviest bass sounds around..very dynamic melodies that assist the guitar. Interesting approach to their song structure too
Alec Torres they’ve talked about their approach when making music and most of the grooves start with her and he just plays off of it
not to mention off an SX Jazz bass! I just picked up a tobacco burst SX Jazz to do some recording, shows up tomorrow!
Thanks luara Lee for showing how she plays the line in Lady and a man! That groove sticks with you. Must be inspired!
I agree
not to mention her hypnotic hip movement...😉
i love how honest she is.... I loved what she said about the pedal.... " i really have that pedal just because I like the cord coming from the front and not from the back of the stage." That was awesome. And she was correct..... playing with that ring, does make her look so freaking cool.
Loved both of them for their honesty. My favorite line of Mark’s is that he wired one of the pick-ups incorrectly
With minimalism like this, no wonder Guitar Center is closing.
That's a trip !!! I just found out about that today. As much as I used to hate GC, it's a badd blow to the music world.
are they? i know this comment was a year ago, but they seem to be doing ok here in NYC. not that im a fan or anything.
@@Eddy3443 I don't know, it looks like they still haven't gone away.
Edinred there’re just in a lot of debt. Like everyone else these days.
“One of my favorite guitar players...Ernie Isley”
Dig him even more now.
Much much more.
I know right?
Earnie Isley is killer.
He’s got great taste… that’s for sure
147 people are big mad about what he said about Stevie’s tone 😂
Their anti-GAS approach is pretty refreshing in this particular moment. Plus they sound amazing.
Mark Speer is a freak of nature, man. He's awesome. One of my favourite guitarists now. Long live Mark Speer.
Laura's tone is absolutely killing it tho
it just seems like he was all " Hey Laura try this bass spot out, alright now come on tour "
haha right? i bet she can't even slap
Oh, you must be a joy to have in a band. A bassist with an ego, great. Yeah, she should just break out into a big slap solo, that would go really great with their sound.
grajmahal This demo made her seem like not a great bass player. (She might be a musical genius, but she's not a master of her instrument. No biggie.) Ricardo Figueroa pointed this out in jest.
If Laura Lee is cool, she wouldn't give a shit. She certainly doesn't need you to defend her against harmless jabs from CZcams comments lmao.
@@ts4gv I mean she's not a great bass player but it's the bass player that fits perfectly to Mark and Dj in my opinion. She said it, she keep it all very simple, she don't give a shit about gear.
I have been waiting to see a Mark Speer rig rundown for ever. This is so much better than I could have anticipated.
"So this is you‘re #1?" - "Actually.... it‘s my Only 1." And only one pick... awesome!
John's manner and interviewing style are so cool. Unflappably courteous and kindly.
Nice to hear Mark rep Ernie Isley, that guy never seems to get as much props as he should.
Voyage to Atlantis one of my faves
He's got room to grow and a lable supporting the band. I'm sure we' haven't seen the best of them yet.
"Four strings, tuned normally", thank you, Laura Lee! And I love that you proudly play an SX bass!
From a general standpoint as a musician this video is refreshing to me
Proof that the magic is in the hands, no so much the gear; now I have a clear reference of less is more!
Thank you for saving me thousands chasing after tone!
His tone is literally the result of his gear and the modifications he made to it. Tone is in the gear, articulation and phrasing are in the hands.
"This is my only pick."
I love the band's commitment to simplicity. There is a space for people obsessed with the different sounds and effects and all that, but at the end of the day you just gotta play music
A budget guy, and important musician. He has the taste to use his apparatus wisely. That's all. The rest, is art.
I'm obsessed with this guys tone. Super interesting to see that it just evolved through playing TONS with a stripped down set up, where everything has to work its load.
brilliant stuff
you listen to peter greens the end of the game LP?
put them headphones on, turn up the volume, and listen carefully right from the very first note, its incredibly delicate and fine
this guy has that light touch as well
I'd rather be obsessed with suicide.
@@JeighNeither hopefully you’ve succeeded then lol jk
What a great episode. I just came back to rewatch it. An awesome lesson in "just play" instead of endlessly researching/buying gear. Two of the most incredible and humble musicians ever.
Ironic; I don't remember enjoying a rig rundown as much as I did this one. Mark and Laura have less gear than most bedroom musicians. Brilliant. I love Khruangbin.
One guitar, two amps and one backup pick and Laura Lee with her 8 year old strings! Love it!!! Normal, unaffected guy playing. Best Wishes man!
Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦!
As a 61 y.o. veteran guitarist, I would have to say Mark Speer is my favorite new guitarist on the scene right now…a breath of fresh air! Like Speer, I’m into exploration of guitar sounds, textures, and tones as well, and he’s managed to carve out his own sound through an economic, almost basic gear set up. That’s very impressive to me. And to know that he’s been influenced by Ernie Isley, one of my guitar heroes as well, is fantastic! Laura Lee, I love her bass set up and sound as well! Sounds like an upright bass Or like 60’s Motown, which you don’t hear in rock music. Very unique group!
Fact that I just binged watched all their live sets, instantly became a massive fan, and then I come here and find he’s a big isley brothers fan. Guy has killer taste in music.
🤝 guess I’m there now
@@matsn6777 I have now also performed august 10 and Maria tambien at an open mic night w my drummer friend 😁
@@sethrose1325 fire, that’s pretty dope🔥 I’m about to learn some songs on the bass, maybe guitar as well (and also got lucky to catch a ticket for the tour)
@@matsn6777 dope enjoy. They just dropped a new song today and releasing the rest April 5th
I’m a gear addict but I love his approach. Best rig rundown I have seen, very inspiring
Just goes to show how much more valuable talent and inspiration is, rather than a lot of expensive gear.
And practice. Those eight hours of playing on Sundays surely did much more for him than any gear ever will.
don't be a gear addict bro learn/make music. don't be a toaster addict just make and eat toast >>>>>>
Love it...she's using a $179.00 Bass!! I really like this band!
Because of this interview, I like the band even more. I love the authenticity! My wife and I saw them in Montreal and were blown away by the live performance. And DJ Johnson on drums and Laura Lee on bass...wow, what a rhythm duo!! "One pick, one guitar, one set of strings". LOL. Love it! You need to print t-shirts.
This band gave me confidence in modern music. His guitar playing is fresh. The wigs are a throwback to those Asian trios i.e. the band from Kill Bill Vol. 1. I wonder.... did The White Stripes go through the same criticism?
mike young Yeah so many 45 year old guitar players don’t ever shut up about Jack White. I’m glad you haven’t seen the ugly comments, there is hope in the world.
Chromaesthesia I’m a 50 year old guitarist & I’ve seen some of these comments. Bogus A.F. Funny.... a BIG SRV fan, love Jack White, grew up on Ernie Isley & think the Peter Green tone is dope!!!!
mike young yes. Jack White was HATED on. Still is, but not as hard.
mike young you should check out Gothic Tropic, Tennis, Anderson Paak and The Free Nationals, Sunflower Bean.... just a few bands that made me feel hopeful for the future of music! Modern Day Guitar Heros! 🤘
Baba Naga and Songhoy Blues have two of the best guitar players around these days
Im in love with Laura Lee
Her speaking voice is magical.
Get in line pal
I like the fact he only uses one guitar and plays/mods it intimately. Refreshing over the collectors who have a large arsenal but don't use any of them well.
I like to imagine Laura squeezing her hands in a jar of peanut butter like, "yea that sounds, real good."
Crunchy tone

That bass is a late 1960s Hofner copy made by Fujigen Gakki in Japan. There is a picture of an old Greco catalogue page, 1969, with exactly that bass in the book "History of Japanese Electric Guitars" by Frank Meyers. Greco being a brand of Kanda Shokai who had the guitars produced by Fujigen.

Mark's entire interview connotes his command and comfort with the guitar.
not a music tech person so I was completely lost for the entirety of this interview but I'm fully inspired to be able to understand one day. love their sound.
I watch this video like every once a month to keep my spirits up for this down to earth approach and basically to steal all the good techniques, ideas and influences he mentions.
The interviewer did a great job. He scaled down his knowledge for Mark because he likes to take center ground in his explanations and he supplemented Laura with insights to make her feel more comfortable during the interview.
Excellent social skills.
he really is the best music interviewer around

Petar Nenov huh
Such a cool band. Laura Lee and Mark seem so zen in their approach. Definitely a breath of fresh air.
This band is an inspiration. Their sound, their simplicity. That's definitely the path I want to follow.
sometimes we get so caught up with gear that we forget about what actually matters which is music.
So true I’m learning
I've heard countless random words used as audio adjectives over the years but for the life of me I can't think what a "peanut butter sound" would be lol
you know, with crunches
or creamy and thick
Yes, and within the sound there's the skippy and jif-sounding subsets
@11:00 'Wah into this mystery..'

Seeing an SX bass and a guitarist with only ONE guitar is so refreshing in times where other artists bragging with gear.

Ahhh ok, but the name is so typically german.
Italian would be Bohlingheri or Bollista... don't mind, just kidding.
Forgive an old german granddad
Speer is definitely German, and Texas has a large population of Germans who's even retained their regional dialects, mostly from Schwabia and Saxony.
Musicians who want to make compelling, interesting music without obsessing over gear and tone or using $100,000 worth of equipment ...how refreshing !
First. Mark Speer is extremely majestic. When I first heard Khruangbin I heard the Ernie Isley on Friday Morning. #hooked
Second, Host is hot. 👏🏽💋
Ernie Isley!!!! Yes!!!!!! Someone else knows!
listen to Friday Morning you'll hear the Isley Bro's in there clearly...

Magical band making magical music! 👍❤ Boomers and X'ers in particular can't contain ourselves in praising this band! Delighted Milennials and Z'ers like them as well.
Mark Speer is the kind of guy to rigorously instruct you on how to trip on acid haha, he's great.
Hahahaha!!! Sometimes I jump down into the comments just out of curiosity, then I start getting concerned that I'm wasting time, But then, I come across comments like this. Absolute gold! And so dead on!
"That peanutbutter sound" Laura just perfectly describes it, amazing tones. This lady plays.
Seen these guys live twice. Once in SA and the other in their hometown Houston. Sometimes... less is more.
Everything’s from stock equipment, they don’t even change their strings, use cheap instruments but create magic like no other band. And it’s cause how they play and how much soul and spirit they are able to express in their playing. I love this band so much!
I love this guy's perspective. He gets what works for him. He's not over analyzing, and jumping on forums to see what's "cool" to fit into the mass hysteria that most guitarists paralyze themselves with technical details that only matter on paper. Try it. If it works, cool. If not, try something else. A shared outlook that unfortunately is rare, but makes life so much simpler.
Love how he gives zero fks about the name dropping and know it all chat from this guy
I love the 'no bullshit' approach to gear - simple, straighforward - but sounding great. Guitarists out there - we could all learn alot from this stripped down approach.
Houston represent! One of the best in a while!!
I have to come back to this rig rundown every once in a while. Spartan approach says it all! Makes me feel weird about owning 20+ basses and a handful of amps, pedals, etc...
This video is an inspiration for over-gased, tool obsessed guitarists (myself included). This is when the music dominates gear and that's the way it should be
this dude is a fantastic guitarist and somewhat original too boot..such a great trio
I'm a drummer and I’ve never been so sensitive to guitar melodies than Mark's melodies !
Khruangbin is now an obsession !
all time fav right rundown
Thanks for another great rig/wig rundown. It's the first I've heard of this band and all I can say is that I'm going to be purchasing some of their music. This is a primo example of "less is definitely more". I'm glad to see some Canadian tour dates.

This is one of the simplest but very effective guitar set ups I've seen.
I love this interview. The guy from Premier Guitar is trying so hard to do his job and go over gear and gear but both Laura and Mark have a really simple setup.
YES!!! I've been waiting for this ever since I attended that show!
This is a video I've been waiting for!
Just pure talent, no need to hide behind a thousand pedals.
I think I'm in love with this guy Mark Speers mind, such a badass.
SWEET! Just started listening to this band, so awesome to see a rig run down.
I like this guy cause he’s been playing for at least 15 years based on one of his comments, but he talks about his gear like he’s new and super excited about it. Cool! Also it’s amazing that he’s avoided GAS ‘guitar acquisition syndrome’, really impressive
This is great, really down to earth people and very interesting and inspriring. Love the fact shes rocking an SX bass too
I love the way the interviewers mind is repeatedly blown. A back to basics mind reset 🙏❤️🙏
