- This hymn was written by Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel (b. 1697) in 1752. The tune is attributed to Jean Sibelius. It is sung here by a the traditional acapella boy's choir, Libera, complete with lyrics. Visit my blog at life-incessant.... 'When Suffering Doesn't Stop" for more on the subject of suffering and hope. And remember: DON'T FEED THE TROLLS Also beware: You may very well be prayed for against your will. It's just kind of who we are.
I so blessed by this hymn. Lost my disabled son to cancer last year and now, my elderly husband is being taken care of by hospice. My parents have died and my favorite aunt died years ago, too. My youngest son would rather live thousands of miles away. I listen to this wonderful hymn often.
Sorry for you loss and pain. My dad died of cancer a few years back now. I woke suddenly one morning at 1am overcome by loss. I turned on the radio and after a few seconds this hymn began sung by a beautiful soprano voice. Those first words 'Be Still My Soul' permeated me with peace.
We cannot trust in the things of this world, including family and friends. Remember, Jesus said "I will be with you until the end." In that we can trust.
This song does bring great peace and comfort. Listen to it often. It will get you through life.
Loss after the death of a loved one is a journey. There are times when something "triggers" the sense of loss; it can be a letter that comes with their name on it or something that you happen to find in the closet. At those moments, there is an overwhelming ache that comes from deep down that cannot be completely described. I know this hymn is a great comfort and it has helped me in the days and months that have passed.
So very very sorry for your unimaginable sorrow
Shortly the grief, the pain, the sorrows and the trials of this world will be gone and we shall be forever with the Lord. This is the blessed hope that we have in Jesus.
I cry everytime i listen to this song because when life gets me down I am reminded that the Lord is on my side. Its a true blessing to know God. A friend who will always be there for us no matter what. I am currently experiencing a very diffucult situation in which I don't know how to escape from, I'm continuously being tormented and hurt. I live in fear and I can only cry to God to hear my prayers and rescue me from this hell that im living in. The words of this song touches me to only know that God is always with us. Let us be still because the Lord is on our side. AMEN.
My mum just passed away yesterday, to be with her Lord and her God. My brother gave me this link. Precious, balm to the soul!
Mike Abel Take heart my brother. No doubt your mom is resting in the bosom of our Lord Jesus.
Sincerely appreciated Rex
Amen!
Mike Abel I second that Mike.....There will come a time when all tears are wiped away, and we will be with the Lord, and our loved ones.
Sorry for your loss..
So sorry for your loss Mike , your mam will always be with you , because a mothers love is eternal ... and your mam is with god and all his angels watching over her family and keeping you safe ...x
The song has given me great courage, confidence and peace in my heart at this time of my trial.
Two years ago my best friend died in my arms I could'nt cry until I heard this Hymn on the radio and the tears just flowed and even now everytime I hear this it brings back the loss of my best and much loved friend
Played this beautiful hymn at my Down son's funeral. Now I play it often in his memory. Love you John. Till we meet again. Be still and wait patiently.
John Brannigan b
You will
Your beloved Son is safe in the comforting arms of Daddy God, John. X
Thank you Mary
Your broken heart
This is the most beautiful hymn to ever come from Finland, composed by Jean Sibelius. For a Finn it is weird to hear lyrics in any other language than the original, but it is of course wonderful that many people around the world get to enjoy this wonderful Finnish composition. You should definitely listen to the whole symphony.
Eeva Lehto You are right the music is from the Hymnal part of the Finlandia Suite. The words are originally German but translated into English by a Scottish lady from my home town, Edinburgh, she used the suedonymn H.L.L. (Hymns from the Land of Luther) for her translations.
I was watching Great Continental Rail Journeys on the BBC last night (I'm not sure if it is available in Finland?) and they played this part of Finlandia, which in turn prompted me to search for this hymn.
All the best from Scotland.
Very well and respectfully said, thank you! I imagine this would be like me listening to the tune of "The Star Spangled Banner" put to different words -- not something I'd necessarily mind, but it would feel weird! I have listened to Jean Sibelius' FINLANDIA in its entirety and it is beyond lovely. Here's a link, if anyone is interested: czcams.com/video/HG8H8I9PnFw/video.html
Sadly, I have deleted countless rude comments from some very bitter people claiming that this tune was "stolen" and misused by being put to words that condescend to praise the Christian God. Of course, most people are reasonable and believe that sharing is a good thing regardless of religious affiliation or citizenship status. Finland loses nothing by sharing her timelessly beautiful music with these equally timelessly beautiful words, but rather gains not only more notoriety, but also wins the hearts of still more music lovers worldwide. If someone would create such a gorgeous hymn with the tune of "The Star Spangled Banner" or "America the Beautiful," I would be so proud! God bless Finland.
WHy do people criticize such beauty. Your right to delete the hate is welcome
Megan Smith Here I am a year late to this, but I can't but help the fact that I feel like it is a little stolen. Just becouse some do not know what is Finland :/ But it gives me some national bride when I can ask a US citizen: "Do you know where this hymn originally comes from?" "USA!" "No, it comes from Finland :)" *Insert too long discussion about the hymn*
i agree vith you Eeva, this make all of us finns proud,
i love this song, brings tears to my eyes every time. this song fills my soul. I cant wait to see my savoir and tell him how sorry I am for the pain he suffered for me and others, the grief and afflictions we suffer are nothing compared to Christ. he's lifted me out of the depths of hell and breathed life into me. I'm forever a humble servant. I'm grateful for Christ's undying love, his mercy and atonement.
Man, why have I never appreciated how gorgeous this melody is?! One day it just hit me out of nowhere and moved me more than any time I have heard it in the past. Unbelievably powerful.
I the middle of great lost and brokenness , filled with much sorrow, void and hopelessness , i was led to this Hymn. " Be Still My Soul" I sat sobbing as the words entered my entire been and at that moment I realized that I am not alone and will never be. . No matter what your suffering my be "Our God is able', to see you through . You are not alone.
God will never, ever let you down, Winston, and He will be close during the toughest times.
Thank you - my marriage has fallen apart, my wife threw me out and has another man in the house. She calls her self a Christian and go to church with this new guy. This song lets me know the God hasn't abandoned me.
I am so sorry you're going through such terrible pain. God does not condone her actions at all, and if her pastor knows her story and hasn't exercised church discipline against them both (after giving them a chance to repent), then the pastor of that church and its elders are in more trouble with the Lord than even she is. But try not to take joy in that. Find a real Biblical church and pray for the Lord to help you move on so that someday you can wish her the best.
I know this pain. If you are a Christian pray for her and cling to Jesus. We live in dark times but look up he comes quickly for us. Bless you
The precious missionary, Eric LIddell, requested this fine song to be sung by fellow prisoners including children when he was dying from a brain tumor at the age of 43, in 1945, where he was a prisoner of the Japanese in China, and far from his family that he had sent to safety. He loved God very much and gave much love and care to people. He was also an Olympic Gold medal winner. You might know about him from the movie "Chariots of Fire."
I loved that movie....
Can´t listen to this without tears. It is so wonderful.
I had such a wonderful day at church today. It was my first time singing with the choir and we sung this beautiful Hymn "Be still my soul". All last night and morning the devil try to stop me with various obstacles to keep me away from church today but god had my back and he said
"let your soul be still for the lord is on thy side."
Hope everyone is having a wonderful sabbath day.
One of my favourite Hymn,, Thanks for sharing this bro, Wagens Jerome
No problem marites escandor
May God bless you.
This song gave me much comfort during a dark night of the soul a few years ago, and it is good to hear it again, thank you.
Most beautiful rendition of this song I have ever heard. With the written lyrics and the way it is sung, absolutely makes you contemplate the God of the Bible. Thank you for this blessing.
My mom was Finn we played this at her funeral to honor our heritage it brings me great comfort always miss her so much
I need prayers...they found key tones in my kidneys from very bad diabetes..please please pray
Listening to this always reassures me that God is always there for me, even when I feel that life is getting the better of me. I listen to this every day before I go to work just for that reminder.
My favorite hymn ever. The words bring such comfort to me.
yes, I feel his spirit every time any hymn we sing it is the testimony of our lord
This is my Mom's favorite hymn. I know she is listening from heaven. This hymn fills my soul.
This is the most beautiful version I have ever heard of this hymn - after listening to it, I felt like I could not listen to anything else. Only silence would do.
One of my favorite hymns. Always bringing tears ti my eyes. This is the song of my past and present. The Lord is always always on my side. Thank you Father God for your numerous ways.
This hymn touches my soul so deeply. The powerful and faith of the words, thee innocence of the voices, and the tremendous love of Christ who refuses to let us go...just overwhelming.
One of my favorite hymns as well. Very moving especially when sung by a hundred or so in church. Gives one reassurance that no matter how bad this world becomes God will be there for those who truly believe and have accepted him.
+Rauno Repomies Actually, the tune is all that is attributed to Sibelius, as the video description states. The song you are thinking of is called "Finlandia" and has very different lyrics as it is sung about a country, not God. When that tune came under public domain, the poem by Katharina von Schlegel was set to it, and this became the timeless hymn "Be Still My Soul," which is posted here without borders and is not about any manmade war. This hymn is about trusting that God is God and loves us no matter what horrors and sorrows we may endure. The Sibelius tune, though beautiful, is superfluous and holds no objective meaning or nationalistic connotations.
+Jacob Samuel The bigoted bully Rauno Repomies has been blocked. Please don't waste your time on trying to educate those who wish to remain in the dark, but thank you for trying.
+Megan Smith Thank you from Finland for uploading this. Actually *ORIGINAL* Finlandia hymn(s) with lyrics have everything to do with God. Like a prayer. Why people changed the lyrics, I don´t know. Sadly only few today knows this.
At least one video with those lyrics can be found here in CZcams. (In Finnish).
*Can´t find the 1st lyrics by Jalmari Finne
+The Duckfather That's very interesting to know, thank you! Can you please post the URL of the original Finlandia in a reply if you have it?

(1919):
Oi Luoja suuri, päivän suo jo koittaa,
Hälvennä huoli, min vallas’ on maa,
Suo aamun auringon yön kauhut voittaa, Tyynnytä myrsky mi raivoaa,
Antaos Suomelle Sun armosi vaan,
Suo elo rauhaisa ja onnea!
Oi Luoja suuri, kansasi suo luottaa
johtosi huoltoon, turvaan ainoaan,
Suo voimaa armahtaa ja lohtu tuottaa,
Uljuutta anna, kun taistellaan,
Oikeus kirkasta ja veljeys suo,
Sä elo rauhan ja onnen tuo!
(1937):
Oi, Herra, annoit uuden päivän koittaa,
nyt siunaa armossas isäimme maa!
Soit aamuauringon yön varjot voittaa
ja taiston, ahdingon rauhoittaa
Sua kansa kiittäen ain kunnioittaa
ja rauhaa toivoen uurastaa.
Korkeimman johtoon kansa Suomen luottaa,
vapaus-aarrettaan se puolustaa
Se kylvää siemenen ja tyynnä vuottaa
satohon tyytyen jos sen saa.
Siunaus Herran meille onnen tuottaa
ja turvan parhaimman lahjoittaa.
The melody is Finnish national romantic piece Finlandia (the finale part of it atleast) which was composed to picture Finlands fight for independence against Russian Empire.
I'm not one for hymns, but this is just breathtaking. I got legit goosebumps, this is so good.
A song that has got me through grief and anxiety, just listening to the words calm me, blissfull gentle music
Ditto :)
Absolutely beautiful! Tears are
rolling down on my cheek. Angelic voices...
We lost a loved one today...I was asked to sing this song for an upcoming sermon this month yesterday by my choir director....now I know why...God wanted me to listen and practice this wonderful hymn so I could get this message today when it is so needed. God is so amazing isn't He? He knows our every need...and fullfils them. Thank you for having this beautiful version of this hymn on youur channel Megan:).
I'm so sorry for your loss, but as always, our loss is heaven's gain. "He knows our every need... and fulfills them." It's not like losing a loved one, but husband is a minister, and as we left our past congregation (which happened to be very close to my Mom and Dad) for a call to a different one 9hrs away just a few weeks ago, our past congregation gave us a very generous parting gift. This week, it turns out I may need surgery (nothing life threatening, but serious enough to lay me up for 6-8 weeks) and because of that gift, we will be able to fly my Mom out here to care for my daughter and the house and all that stuff if need be. What a glorious comfort a need fulfilled is. (Philippians 4:19; Matthew 6:8; Luke 12:22-34)
It's the most wonderful hymn
My mother, an Irish immigrant, died at age 88. She chose chose this hymn for her own memorial service. It brings peace to me, and to many. This is a wonderful rendition. Thank you.
Have always loved this hymn and especially now during a very dark time. Thanks.
Great music -- every time I hear this melody I wish I were Finnish!
My favourite Hymn of all time......If we have the Lord in our lives, what have we to fear? Nothing touches me spiritually like the words sang on this track.
paul ward Hey, Mr. Ward, you might like this video that's based on Romans 8:31-39 "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?..." czcams.com/video/cF5ueE5ihJQ/video.html
Thankyou Megan.
I absolutely love this hymn. This, and How Great Thou Art.
Most uplifting hymn I've ever heard! I love the sound of a boy's choir.
Such angelic voices! So moving!

Beautiful version I am having this played at my brothers funeral I also had it at the children’s christening this is my favourite hymn 💕❤️
In the midst of turmoil and fears the words of this hymn are a comfort and assurance that no matter where your are at in your journey of life you'll find God, beautifu singing as well!!
Beautiful song. It is just the song anyone who is grieving needs to hear.
I want this at my funeral
I love this song. For about 1-2 reasons. It reminds my of a friend that moved to Alaska 4 years ago. And because it helps me to breathe and remember the Lord Our God. I am Evie Hansen and I attend The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I am LDS. I believe god is here and I believe he came to earth to restore our sins.
My soul be still for you are in the care of the Almighty! Nothing is as soothing as this assurance. Thanks for posting this wonderful hymn. I'm grateful.
One of my very favorite hymns from childhood. Its so beautiful. Thank you.
Preparing a sermon and this became the answer to prayer...now if only I can get the congregation to sing as beautiful .
Thanks for the upload. ❤ I heard this sung yesterday in a funeral scene in the drama Call the Midwive and, as a Finn, was really amazed. :o I didn't know this composition by Jean Sibelius has been used in English language Christian hymns, too. It is from the symphonic poem Finlandia and both the Swedish and Finnish original lyrics are very patriotic.
The choir sings this very beautifully. Again, thank you. 😘
God is Good and He is Good ALL the time.
thank you for this beautiful song ........ these traditional Hymns always provides me comfort from every negative aspect in life... listening to them bring me peace and a sense of oneness with the almighty... Thank you .!
This is the most beautiful, restful hymn every recorded. Like a bridge over troubled waters! God bless.
Sanctify this place with Thy word O Lord and we will bring You praise and honour.

........Please pray for the Anglican Church of Canada.......Times of change are very challenging, May we all find peace.
I know this is a year late. But if you still need the prayers, you've got them from me. I will keep your church in my heart and mind
linda brown What is happening to the Anglican church in Canada?
Finlandia. Love this melody and the hymn lyrics as well.
Thank you Megan for a such a wonderful rendition of this song. I read the words during my sister-in law's funeral. i could not help but break down in tears but the words are so reassuring and TRUE. Come LORD JESUS!
His promise remains steadfast in us through the darkest nights and stormiest days :) Songs like this are a gift to remind us of that. May God bless you with peace, love and understanding in these turbulent times brothers and sisters.
We had this in our church at one of our holy communion services in 2015 and everyone in the choir that I am Head Chorister in and all the congregation were in tears by the end of it. We all had so many memories that this reminded us off like my fiance and I hadn't long lost our first child before we sang this hymn x x
Such a beautiful & healing song.
In the daily rush of life it is hard to remember what it is all about, why we are here and where our hope lies. This song brings back many memories of my youth and old friends who have died and gone on. Some went on to eternal reward and some I have my doubts about but God knows those who are His own and those who are not. Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Marvelous, moving. Gives peacefulness and trust in the Lord, the almighty. thank you
I cannot hear this without weeping sobs. God bless you Megan. I have 59 friends on Facebook, and I will let you know what the responses are. Paul said we may not know when we meet angels, yet I sense the young lad's voice between verses is angelic, in this most wondrous of hymns. Thank you Megan!
Amen, Rich. Same for me. --- No other song of faith strikes me as powerfully as this one. I can't even get through the first stanza before the tears start to flow -- tears of joy and worship and gratitude at the promise of Him who bore all our sorrows, and walks with us through every darkness we will ever know. --- Thank You, Jesus.
O God my Rock, my Redeemer bless and strengthen all parts of the Church You founded on earth.
Thank you . This is by far, my favorite hymm. Finlandia.
Beautiful sounds Beautiful words and so restful, the haters of the world should sit down and listen to this and bring peace not hate.
Sang this for the first time today in church and found it so moving. Thank you for posting it. I've always loved the music by Sibelius but coupled with such beautiful and comforting words it is lifted to another level again.
beautiful, beautiful rendition of this hymn. thank you for sharing and for your positive message of hope. music has the power to change the world, if we let it.
I’ve had this melody stuck in my head for about two months now and I only just remembered what it was tonight! Thank you so much for posting, it’s beautiful.
my thanks to God for songs like these
I don't believe in god anymore but this song is still one of the most beautiful ever written in the history of humanity.
I go to a catholic middle school and we have special church days were we sing songs like this
This song is so beautiful I love it one of my most favorite
Wow - how pretty! Like listening to the angels in heaven! 😊
This hymn brings me to tears with such peace, joy and hope that cannot be explained.
"The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)
whenever my infant granddaughter gets grumpy I turn this song on and she calms right down and usually falls asleep . I can listen to it over and over.
I love this hymn. It has been my favorite since I can remember. I will listen to this when I feel down. Always brings a smile to my face. When I was about 16 I learned to play it on the Alto saxophone. Thanks for posting. Amazing hymn.
I like this hymn as it brings consolation to my griving heart
Always lovely to listen to. No extravagant lingering and variation in notes within syllables, just simple and beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful. This song is food for the soul.
Today, 24th December 2016, we need these words more than ever. Our only hope and Rock in a world of hatred and turmoil.
More needed today than ever before in the history of mankind.
I am loving this rendition! Thank you so much for posting!!! Beautiful!
The lyrics are from german "stille meine wille" with totally different tune. music and melody is conducted by Jean Sibelius (op 26 "Finlandia Hymni",) original lyrics to this are highly patriotic and used mainly in remembrance of fallen soldiers. It's a bit odd to hear it with lyrics with totally new meaning, but works rather well with von Schlegel lyrics too
I suspect in God's providence, the melody was ultimately written for these lyrics. No other song of faith strikes me as powerfully as this one. I can't even get through the first stanza before the tears start to flow -- tears of joy and worship and gratitude at the promise of Him who bore all our sorrows, and walks with us through every darkness we will ever know. --- Thank You, Jesus.
my all time favorite. I feel the Lord's love every time I listen to this hymn. Beautiful.
One of my three favorite hyms. be still my soul, be thought my vision, and if you but trust in God to guide you.
I was listening to an orchestra presentation on public radio and the conductor was from Finland. He was going to conduct Finlandia and was surprised when he heard that part of the piece had been used as a hymn. When I heard the music I knew right away that I had heard this before in church. It is a very moving hymn and I appreciate you posting it.
U know I will never under stand why this world is filled with hatred god put us on this earth for love peace and forgiveness and to love each other I love god I really do with all my heart we all love him I thank him he keeps us going every day gives us another day to live life I just wish more people were like that
So moving, so beautiful!!!

Beautiful, heavenly
My father, who is now with The Lord, gave me an old '45' record when I left for college, 60 years ago with this song on it.! It was sung by George Beverly Shay. (spelling? ) It still stirs my soul!
I listened to this a few days ago and it has lovely tune and lovely lyrics. I have been blessed listening to it.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful rendition. Brings so much calm.
whenever I let my newborn listens to this music, she would stop and pays attention and then after a while she goes to sleep. what a beautiful song!
Even though I'm agnostic I love this absolutely stunning hymn and find myself humming it at times.
God has touched you with this this hymn. Don't turn away. Now is the hour of salvation
Landmark GIS Thank you much for your concern I appreciate it, I really do. From what I've read God will put me where I'm happy if or when the time comes.
+PureEbil1 I think you're great :)
Thank you! I try
***** Hey Sarah, what's keeping me from faith is that I believe it's impossible to know these things. To me there's no way to tell if the lords teachings are just that, or if they're just some fevered dream of a madman. Now, I'm not saying god doesn't exist, but I'm also not saying he does. I simply admit that I do not know, and I believe it to be impossible to know. This is what is keeping me from faith. But if I were to have a spiritual experience that would be convincing to me, then I would gladly accept that god is real. But until then I just try to be a good person, because that's what it's all about when you really think about it. Love, peace, and unity.
Many times this hymn has brought my heart from depression and distress. This is a beautiful rendition.
Beautiful! Thanks for including information about the song. This choir is wonderful--I'll be looking them up!
