Finally, a channel that focuses on the core of all of this, storytelling! I sure hope you can avoid making this a gear review/cinematic b-roll only channel, although it seems that's what gets the views. Stories are the real heart of it all and there are not enough resources on storytelling! Fascinating and thank you for creating this channel! Btw, despite watching hundreds of hours of youtube, this is the first time I've been so moved as to comment. Great stuff!
I agree. I subbed immediately
Here, here! Definitely my favorite channel for this type of content!
A summary, also can be found at 11:12
1. Cinema Verite - Truthful Cinema - filming only what unfolds in front of you. Letting everything happen in front of the camera
2. Reenactment - Docudrama - Recreating past events in place of B-Roll
3. Talking Heads - Primarily on-screen interview-based with B-Roll
4. Expository - A film designed to re-tell an event/issue - A narrator behind, with footages showing
5.Participatory/Performative - The filmmaker is involved on-screen trying to tell the story
6. Reflexive - A documentary making about the documentary
7. Impressionistic - Nontraditional embracing stylistic storytelling
8. Experimental - Avant-Garde Cinema, No rules - boundary-pushing
Thanks.
1+8 = 👍
As a CZcamsr, I can say this documentary making series is GOLD. Thanks Mark for explaining with so much clarity.
Thanks man!!
I agree! I'm in the process of shooting an interview/documentary and it's my first ever, but I think it will turn out epic just because of his tips!
There's an UncoverDC article to teach how to make political documentaries ... Title is "Becoming a Big-Time Activist with a 20 Buck Movie Editing Program" ...
Thanks Mark 🌎 Greetings from Colombia. The Venezuelan immigrant writer 🇻🇪
Mark, just found this vide. So, simple, clear and timely for me. Thank you. ~ Scott
OMG!!! JUST went and watched finding Vivian Mayer!!!!! thank you sooo much for this recommendation!!! it is fascinating watch!! I didn't want it to end! what a story of life! what great documentary !!!!

For a beginner here, understanding this is something!
vsnu thanks brother!! Excited you’re on the journey also
First Mark Bone video I saw and enforced my ideas about documentaries
Thanks Mark for this! I'm soo glad there is a channel about documentary filmmaking with a creator who does documentaries. Great video, great tips! Greetings form Poland!
Great information. I had no idea there were this many styles of documentaries. I'd seen a couple of these styles in the past but didn't know they had specific categories. I'll be using at least 3 styles in an upcoming short documentary I'm planning to publish in Jan 2023. Thanks for this great insight!
Thanks for this Mark - I’m currently writing my university dissertation based around the styles of documentary filmmaking, and this was really helpful. Enjoy your vacation!
7:22 the flares got real ❤️❤️❤️❤️
When I see this video again I remember this was the first Mark Bone Video I ever saw. The riding bike idea I thought was genius, Mark! Thank you!
That Trike RULES!!! Great job here. Thanks for this stellar info.
My vehicle of choice

John the limo driver from Kansas city
Thanks so much!! We have always stuck to short-form stuff, but I'm looking forward to branching out. In case it's helpful to anyone, I typed up the info from the video:
Cinema Verite - Filming only what unfolds in front of you
Docu-drama/Reenactment - Recreating past events in place of b-roll
Talking Head - Only interviews
Expository - Designed to re-tell an event or persuade people on an issue.
Participatory/Performative - Filmmaker is involved on-screen trying to tell the story
Reflexive/CZcams - Doc about making the doc
Impressionistic - Non-traditional, embracing stylistic storytelling
It's amazing to watch something and actually understand and learn. Thank You
🙏🏻
Wow, I just started this journey from architecture into this and your stuff is just super helpful, thank you!

I've been binging your channel this week! Really enjoying the videos and your insight. We're all on a journey, thanks for giving us the honor of glimpsing yours!
Thank you for this! It can surely help me in my upcoming documentary film contest in our school.
Definitely glad I found this as I prepare to start a documentary series!!!
I just discovered your channel today. I'm a young compositor and video editor that just got into filming. I Just wanted to say thank you for your channel, your content and your work. And out of all things thank you for sharing your knowledge, experiences, and techniques.
13dcl you’re welcome!! Trying to help people go pro and not just make travel videos 😬
And then the recap!! Thank you so much. You foresaw my want.
OMG this is so good, this content is what i need right now, thanks so much
For real, your videos are insanely good. Thank you thank you. Huge help.
Thanks Mark, just writing my next script, really appreciated the insights. I do travel docs, in the style of “come with me and experience a place” - so I get double the fun! Paul
So I have an orphan illness that only effects less than 100,000 of us right now and it’s been a massive struggle for us, I’ve always loved film making, photography and anything to do with a camera but never had more than a go pro 😂 but recently for my 30th birthday this year I told my self I wanted to make a documentary film about what we struggle with on a daily basis, I have no experience in film making or let alone using a great camera beside so many hours behind tutorials but I’m gonna take that leap and try to learn! Gonna interview a bunch of fellow strugglers with this illness and give it my best! Thanks for all your information, these videos give me a lot of motivation and inspiration to start! Thanks so much!
Found you by accident and could not be happier! Instant sub. I've been looking for this genre. I'm new to filmmaking but I've been doing travel photography for many years. I'm frankly tired of all these "cinematic " travel vids since it's all about back flips drone shots and half naked women. I think this genre is what I've been looking for for travels
Brian Decasa amen!! That genre is mega overdone. Happy to talk about other topics and stories!
Thank Prof. Mark! Awesome.
I had to pause and give you a high five for calling out "The Corporation". An amazingly underrated film, and so well done for the time.
I will be very thankful to you for your this act of kindness
Hi I’m a documentary photographer getting deeper into filmmaking thank you for this great video and thanks for mentioning Vivian maier! I teach my young photo students about her she’s amazing and the doc is great! much love!
Loved this! Great summary for film lovers. Thank you for explaining the different types of non-fiction storytelling and giving examples.
I had a blast making this video!
Thanks Mark for this bit of info. I have been making a mixture of these type but never knew what they’re called. Much appreciated bro 🙏🏼
NathanHoang you’re welcome!!
Dude this is awesome! I’m currently working on two docs, one is Called Passion For Story and it’s actually about me and how I figured out over the years that filmmaking is what I’m passionate about, and the other one is called Coffee People and it’s about the passionate and creative people of the third wave specialty coffee movement.
Dope video. It was really nice seeing the styles categorized into their sub areas
I'm a fan of NYT's Op Docs. They are generally very short by different directors on different types of subjects and can offer a lot of inspiration on a variety of approaches.
Genuinely loved this! Thank you!
Im really looking forwards to the doc theme! Im gonna learn tons. :)
Thank you so much! This was awesome to watch.
I'm about to shoot a documentary, not my first as a Cinematographer but my first as a Director. This was so helpful!
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for in regards to making a documentary!!! Thank you for making this video and sharing these styles along with your personal thoughts!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Your video helps a lot. Thank you!
Very helpful. Thank you!
Awesome info and insight. Keep the theme rolling, and thank you :) Cheers from Croatia.
GAnDhYoNe 🙏🏻🙏🏻 will do!!

I'm aiming to create my first documentary next year. I'm literally setting that as my 1 videography goal if I do nothing else next year. This video series has been really helpful to give more of a direction with how I want it to turn out, so thanks man. Currently, I feel like the docu is stradling 3 genres: Talking heads, Expository & Participatory. I look forward to watching the rest of your videos 👍
