Check your front load bobbin machine for correct timing.
I often here "My machine is out of time" but most times the machines are in time but have other problems.
This is the first video in a series of how to check sewing machine timing. In this video I will show you how to check the timing on a front load bobbin machine and other possible problems if your machine is in time.
Sewing machine timing is a term used frequently when a sewing machine is skipping stitches, will not pick up the lower thread or is looping. Usually the sewing machine is not properly threaded, the needle is improperly installed or damaged.
In future videos I will be showing how to check sewing machine timing on top and side load bobbins. I will also make videos in the series on how to fix sewing machine timing for various machines.
Understanding how a sewing machine works and how to check the sewing machine timing is very important. If you have any questions on timing let me know.

You really helped me out! Machine was recently serviced by a reputable shop - they are good folks. But he forgot to tighten both set screws back on the drive shaft (not sure real name). So, I hit a 4-ply piece of denim and it spun. Like, 100% out of time! Not easy to get it back to shop, so found your video, and got straight and zz back in time! THANK YOU!

I have a friend that has an older Singer with a horizontal bobbin. There is no tension from the bobbin and I see no way to adjust it. It just has a black half moon case that it sits in. How do I adjust that tension? I can purchase a new bobbin “case” for $30 but I’m not sure that will solve the problem.

Thank you! Great explanation. I think I finally understand the relationship between the hook, needle, and scarf as well as why it's so important to get the orientation of the needle correct. I will watch your others videos next. One other issue I have is that I am restoring vintage machines and I sometimes have to remove the pressure bar and needlebar for a deep clean. So I have to get both of them reinserted at the correct height AND also rotated correctly! And yes, there can be a lot of dirt at the top of the needle, below the stop. Thanks again.

First and foremost, thank you for the time and effort you put in for us viewers ! I don't own a Neechi BU just yet but found a really clean looking BU for sale near by for what seems to be a great price ($175). It has new powerful motor and a new electronic foot pedal. Iv'e talked to the gentleman on the phone a couple times setting up a meet time. He is a sew'r himself and has 1/2 doz machines. Here's where I need your help, he said he recently loaned it out to his sister and when he got it back to sell he said he can't get it to sew like it had when he first acquired it. (He said it sew'd amazing) It's bunching up thread on bottom side. He has tried new needle's, bobbin, bobbin tension, top tension, remove and re-install bobbin case etc. Now I don't know his knowledge of repair and diagnostics. Now he really doesn't want to sell cause he can't get it running. I hate to pass a clean BU for a more than fair price. Could it be as simple as the timing got knocked out ? I don't know how hard that is to do. Any thoughts of your would be appreciated. I am still going to go see machine tomorrow but wanted to go into it a little better prepared, ie How far should needle bar come up from bottom when hook is right behind needle? How close should hook point be from needle scarf ? Does a BU have timing marks on needle back like Singer's do ? Thanks again for you video's.

    • @sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079
      @sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079  Před 8 měsíci

      You are very welcome!
First and foremost if it is stitching the timing probably is not off.
It sounds like a simple fix.
If it is looping and bunching up then it is probably a simple fix.
Here are the things I check on any machine that comes in if it is bunching up.
First the needle for damage, then the needle plate for damage, the hook and bobbin case for damage, the tension discs to ensure lint or a ball of thread is not stuck between them.
Always make sure to raise the presser foot before threading or that will cause looping and bunching up.

Brother XL-3001 Oscillating Front loader. Never looked at a sewing machine before last week. Done an old Singer and Bernina last week.. easy… this is a bugger… but as you say, might be the needle height. I already found one ‘mistake’ . My illusion my machine was out of time was I was not looking at the ‘hook’ , I was looking at the ‘horn’ in front of it !

Thank you for this explanation, it's very clear. I checked my Singer Simple 3221 and the clearance seem fine. The issue is that the hook is way too far from the needle but from the front view. So the needle arrives between the spacing of the hook. More of a left/right issue than a front/back issue. It was the same problem I had before.

I so appreciate the high magnification shots you provided for us…very helpful. They served to provide a much needed view of how the tiniest bit of dirt or grime can be a crucial element in causing sewing issues such as skipped stitches. I noticed this in the magnified view of the very top of the needle hitting the metal stop.
What do you recommend to use to remove grime (oily dirt)? Alcohol, perhaps?
I have several machine brands and models, e.g. Babylock, Bernina, Pfaff, Juki, and vintage Viking Husqvarna. They are front loading, top loading, and side loading. I’m looking forward to your timing series…thank you!

Thank you, I appreciate your comment.
I use mineral spirits to remove oily residue and alcohol to remove dried dirt and varnish.
Alcohol can damage some finishes such as the clear coat on antique machine and the lighter colors on some singers such as the 400 and 500 series machines as well as the 6000 series vikings. But it does not affect the darker colors on those machines.

Thank-you for making this video! Your detailed information and camera angles helped me understand the concept of sewing machine timing. I've recently taken my New Home (front load bobbin) sewing machine in for a tune-up/repair and the stitches are not catching on lightweight stretch fabrics. Oddly, it sews on woven fabrics. I've adjusted the pressure, made sure the needle was inserted properly, etc. I think the timing might be off. It seems like the hook is not passing through the scarf before the needle goes up. Something is amiss. After watching your video, I feel I can talk intelligently about what may be wrong when I take the sewing machine back to the people who charged me for the "tune-up".

the Hook: I've had a few fine burrs and dull point on some of my vintage machines and I've used a white or pink (only) nail file (for acrylic nails) to buff out fine burrs and points. For the simple burrs it has worked. They are also good to buff circular beveled or unbeveled edges on plastic.

I am not familiar with that particular machine so I can"t offer much help with it.
But usually if you are trying to set the timing on a machine and you make it 180 degrees out, it is because when setting the timing you turned the hand wheel in reverse rather than forward.

Thank you for your videos! I have a white sewing machine model 639 that has timing issues. The hook does not go past the needle in order for it to grab the thread On the needle upstroke. I cannot find any videos on fixing the timing. I’m hoping you can help me? Thank you!

Very helpful info, thank you very much. My machine is a White Model 1927. I almost started taking my machine apart myself and then decided against it after seeing your video. I can't find any info on this machine at all other than the manual that came with it. Your comment re thick material was key for me as my machine was working spendidly until I forced thick material through the feeder. I then lowered the feeder and that didn't help, so I raised it back up and it hasn't sewn since. But it won't pick up the bobbin thread. This has just started. I don't use it very often and just for basic straight sewing, but before I last put it away I cleaned and oiled it and it was working perfectly yesterday until I tried to sew through thick material. I assume it could be the possibility of the needle bar being moved. Is this something I can do, or do I have to take it to a shop? Thank you for all your great help. I will click on your link for email notifications for future videos.

Good possibility the needle bar got pushed up.
If you can look at the needle bar and see where it was sitting then you may be able to do it your self. If you can't tell where it was sitting then it could be tough. Check the timing, if it is not correct then the needle bar probably got pushed up.

This exact scenario happened to me as well except it seems my needle bar seems so. In fact so low I can’t seem to get a new needle pushed back in there. The bar is very far down. Can I fix this or is it a shop issue?

Heavy duty 4452 there's a clicking sound that it makes when the needle is coming down to meet the hook. should the hook be right above the eye at that time? what is the position that the hook should have when this noise happens? I'm having problem with the top thread not picking up the bobbin thread. I've watched all the videos in this series I just wanted to make sure that I'm headed in the right direction!!

So, my machine is able to stitch straight stich, and when I come to do the zig zag, the needle actually hit if I try to do a small zig zag, and if I look the whole needle bends and slides when I try to do the full size zig zag. Checked the needle position, changed the needle 2 times, first used and oregon needle , than a singer needle. I got a sewing machine , a White brand, model 219 R . Got the machine and had to go buy the hook and the ring on top as it was missing. Now can the hook be the problem? Can the hook the wrong hook? what is the part number for this machine I need to get. I enjoy fixing sewing machines, but I think that after adjusting the timing ....it won't work well. Please help me out if you can

I truly appreciate your tips and tricks videos. I have a singer 2277 and recently it has started breaking needles. I am hitting something hard, mostly when I go forward and backwards. I have noticed my feed dog was sticking and I cleaned it really good and now I'm wondering if it is out of time. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hard to say for sure but sounds like you maybe using to small of needles or your pulling your fabric through your machine.
You need to identify what the needle is hitting I suspect probably the needle plate.
Did cleaning fix the feed dog issue?

At one point I was pulling the material, it had gotten stuck and I tried to help it through. I realized that could possibly be part of the problem so I haven't since. After breaking 4 needles, I switched to singer heavy duty needles and I'm sewing cotton material with elastic. After I cleaned the feed dog it hasn't gotten stuck but I feel a little hesitation every once in a while. I haven't seen through the elastic since then but it sewed just the material fine...but with a hesitation.

The Athena was a good machine, unfortunately most of the parts needed to repair them are no longer available.
There is several different problems it could have.
Out of time, a broken gear, the needle bar release not properly working, the needle bar needs to be adjusted...
Unfortunately someone familiar with the machine needs to look at it.

I have a Necchi 537L that is definately out of timing. When the hook reaches the 12 0'clock position the point of the needle has reached the bottom of the needle plate on the upward part of the stroke. I can't lower the needle bar as some videos suggest because the needle would hit the bobbin case on the downward stroke.

Thank you so much sir for your videos, they are very helpful.
    My machine is 20U34 Singer.
It is not stitching properly, the stitches are irregular and makes gathers at the end.
The spring on the bobbin broke.
Could it be it lost timing or it is due to the spring that broke?

    • @sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079
      @sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079  Před rokem +1

If it is stitching then it is probably not the timing.
I don't know what you mean by irregular that could cover many different problems. Maybe you can better explain it.
If the spring on the bobbin case broke then you need a new bobbin case.
Gathering is usually related to improper tension balance and overall tension to tight

They should not be moving out of time.
Next time you adjust the timing make sure the oil is cleaned out of the screw holes on the hook that hold it in place and put several drops of lock tight in so it goes all the way to the shaft as well as locks the screws themselves in place.

I have been servicing and repairing vintage Kenmore machines for about 5 years. I have never run into one that the timing was off until now. I think someone who didn’t know what they were doing tried to figure out why the bobbin thread keeps birds nesting and looping and breaking and messed with the timing.I have looked at my other Kenmore machines to try to figure out where the needle and point on the shuttle should be, and it appears that this machine is slightly out of time, but I have no idea how to adjust the timing on a vintage Kenmore. I have adjusted several Singer machines though but they were all drop in bobbins. This is a vertical front loading bobbin. The model I am working on is 158.17530.

      @sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079  Před 2 lety

      Hello Faith,
Yes vintage Kenmore machines don't get out of time unless someone who does not understand them starts working on them.
I would suggest looking at the the gears on the lower shaft and see if anything looks as if it has had a wrench taken to it or see if any of the screws seem looser than they should be, as you know by now if it has never been loosened they are extremely tight especially on vintage machines.
I would look start with the two gears behind the hook. Both of those shafts probably have a flat where one of the setscrews sits, make sure one of the setscrews is on the flat first then try to determine if it is the correct setscrew.
Let me know if this works or if you need more help.

I have a Kenmore model 385 that is definitely out of timing. It's a top bobbin loading machine. The machine doesn't pick up bobbin thread. When the hook reaches the 12 0'clock position the point of the needle reaches almost the bottom of the needle plate on the upward part of the stroke. The needle eye doesn't come up to the hook level until the hook reaches a 10 o'clock position. I can't lower the needle bar as some videos suggest. I also adjusted gear setting for the hook timing. But that didn't help either. Do you have any suggestions to fic this problem?
