7:20 Those are called true temperament frets, and they are exactly what you think they are for. Henrik is probably one of the best MODERN bass players on the planet right now. His performances consistently bring tears to my eyes.
Man he is one of my favorite bass players. I’m a bass player and I wish I had 10% of that talent. I’d be a superstar cause he’s a beast on that bass. One of thr best.
Owanes videos are always hilarious with his exploding helicopters and other goofy edits. Incredible player and composer, and its cool seeing someone so talented that doesnt take themselves too seriously haha
Yeah it’s always a good thing when they don’t. I think the most talented ones are that way.
Owane is an excellent player and a great guitar player himself. Check out Summer Jam or Love Juice. He's also a hell of a bass player.
Thanks for the suggestion Buddy!
Those frets are True Temperament frets, which is a Swedish invention iirc, and mostly used on guitars. Henrik uses them on most of his basses, and says it makes a real difference for him, when it comes to intonation, and that they're not any different to play with than straight frets. And that's just me repeating what I've heard, as I'm a horn player and really have no clue about these kinds of instruments, if I'm honest. :D
The guy in the red and black jacket is Jack Gardiner, a British guitarist (who lives in Switzerland, I think, which explains the Alps in the background), and the other guy (who plays both keys and guitar) is Owane, who's Norwegian..
And they are all masters of their instruments. Check out "Lovejuice" with Owane f.i.
Thanks Lotta for thr awesome information! These guys killed it. Wow it was awesome! I figured it had to do with tuning and intonation but I wasn’t completely sure. I didn’t know you were a horn player. What do you play?
@@bobcieslinski THE horn (a.k.a. the french horn). ;D
@@lottawiklund8606 the most difficult to play of all horns…in my humble opinion (and I’m not a horn player, just a string player) so I REALLY can’t talk 🤣
@@ingefiddle I took cello lessons for a couple of years, some twenty years ago, and I found the bowing REALLY difficult. The french horn is indeed a ridiculous construction, and I guess it's not exactly suited for the faint of heart, but I think all instruments have their own challenges. ☺
The frets are called True Temperment and avoids having to retune for every key.
Wow! Jack was amazing.
These guys blew me away.
Thank you so much for the reaction to these phenomenal musicians. Awesome channel, brother!
Thanks for the kind words I appreciate it!
Thanks for this great reaction, Bob-.
This track is dope, absolutely on fire, -and yet they make it sound like this little ditty…. :)
Owane is a Norwegian multi instrumentalist (here on keys and ‘some’ guitar), and Jack Gardiner the guitarist. Both highly regarded jazz and fusion instrumentalists. They’d never met before the making of this video and the rest of the whole album Shredemption, but look forwarding to ‘one day having a glass of water’ together 🤣 Henrik Linder is one of their childhood heroes, so they asked him to join them for this track.
His solo -just great. He pulled all the stops out, -notice how he even brings his left thumb onto the fretboard at 5:52?! He’s playing one of his Mattisson Signature basses with a true temperament fretboard, -yes, for better intonation, as you’ve guessed.
I also love his bass line underneath that fire guitarists’s solo…just too good!
Elsewhere Henrik talked about his need to adapt his relatively small hands to a relatively big 6-string fingerboard, and how it made him search for economic ways and positions for his left hand. Always strikes me how calm his left hand is…
Like you, I wonder who’s playing the drums, they sound so tight as well…it could be a drummer he’s worked with called Maciej Dzik.
Ah, and that moment when Owane also tries some fancy moves on the keyboard, at 5:56 😂👍
Awesome info fiddlestix thanks for sharing all of that! I love to hear your take on things too. Stay safe!
@@bobcieslinski thanks, always love listening to your channel… 👍
Pretty sure on Owane's releases "YOLO" and "Jack and Owane" he has programmed the drums. He is/was also a DJ.
@@bmac9478 thx for that 👍
Great reaction, Bob! Glad you loved it :) You will not be disappointed if you dig deeper into Owane's music videos on CZcams. Good luck :)
Hey Thomas! Thanks again! Yeah this was killer. Those guys are beasts. Loved it!
As you're really digging Henrik right now:
Foreplay - Longtime covered by Lachy Doley (ft. Henrik)
I’ll add it to the list. It sounds interesting.
@@bobcieslinski oh, and just as a disclaimer the lineup is amazing: the drummer, Mike Portnoy, played for Dream Theater for 25 years and the guitar player, Joel Hoekstra, is Whitesnakes guitarist since 2014.
The True temperement frets has the biggest effect, when he is playing with acoustic pianos or other instruments, who have different octave. Like the piano f.i. which is tuned by ear. Just a qualified guess.
Thanks milesdust!
The bass: I think it's called "well temperament", "wohltemperiert" in german. See this article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Well_temperament
In Germany we know "Das wohltemperierte Klavier" by J.S. Bach.
Thanks Andreas for the info!
In my 50 years of playing bass, I can honestly say that I've never heard anyone refer to a fingerboard as a fretboard. Maybe it's just me. Also, the keyboard player was the other guitarist on this video. All that said, I really liked the tune. There's a lot of great musicians out there!
Hi Dave wow you sure have a lot of experience with the bass. I feel pretty good that I can share this new info with you. Thanks for watching!
Here is the definition of a fingerboard:
Definitions of fingerboard
noun a narrow strip of wood on the neck of some stringed instruments (violin or cello or guitar etc) where the strings are held against the wood with the fingers.
I’ve heard it called both a fingerboard and a fretboard since there are frets on The neck and that’s where the fingers go.
@@bobcieslinski of course you're right. It just sounds odd to me. Iv been repairing orchestral strings for the past 30 yrs, so that's probably why.
I have that exact Edirol MIDI keyboard... wonder what he's playing out of it, Keyscape?
OK, I'm new by way of just chasing "Dirty Loops" reactions to see who I enjoy. And... here I am. I've only seen a few so far, but have greatly enjoyed. I see you have some Snarky Puppy along with numerous others I'll enjoy, and I'd like to throw two suggestions. Cory Wong and the Wong notes is an amazing act, as you've seen with Dirty Loops. I can give you specifics, or you can pick most any of his! And from Snarky Puppy, Mark Lettieri. "Montreal" live has some off the chain musicianship.
Thanks for the kind words and suggestions! Glad you are enjoying these. I’ll add some Cory Wong to the list.
Matterhorne- toblerone
I read or heard someone say that Henrik has crooked frets because it helps him to play more accurately! Not sure if it does and k forget who said it! You being a BASSIST does that seem possible?
Hi Sultan, the crooked frets are a thing and they are used for better intonation. It is a thing. That is why fretless basses exist. Some people like to play in slightly different positions other than the fret mark. So they might be slight off from that. Well Henrik has specialty frets so he doesn’t have to go fretless and he gets better intonation. Thanks for asking!
Toblerone
Another fun band for you to react to
Mats & Morgan band - En Schizofrens dagbok
Thanks Kim! I’ll add them to the list.
