I bought a 2018 6 speed manual transmission 5.0 mustang brand new in 2018. Have had NO problems with it. Previous to that I had a 2013 5.0 with manual transmission. The 2013 clutch and shifter sucked. The 2018 is a lot better. During the breaking in period I made sure to shift through the gears quickly but smoothly, never slamming the shifter into gears. With 39000 miles on the odometer I have 0 complaints with the 2018 mustang. It’s always a real pleasure to drive that thing.

My 00GT’s Tremec T45 is freshly rebuilt and the shifter is a direct mount hurst. Even directly mounted and with a clutch cable it demands a good firm pull when the revs are high. Big engines mean big transmissions. Part of owning a manual v8 means you gotta put effort into it and also learn where your gates are. If you’re grinding you have another issue entirely, but shift effort is all part of the game. A short shifter could increase the effort as they raise the fulcrum point of the lever. Make sure the clutch is bled correctly.

It's hard to shift fast smoothly mostly because the bite point is very high up in the pedal travel, and then also, the spring assist makes the bit point pop back so it is very difficult to time the clutch release with the gear change since the clutch pedal is variable resistance.

    • @dwilliams3828

I have a 21 GT and installed an MGW race spec shifter at 173 miles. The shifts are more like a toggle switch or light switch. Absolute precision. Feels almost like its gated. At 250 miles I replaced the factory fill DCT Automatic transmission fluid with BG Syncro Shift ll. This car shifts so well I sometimes just sit in it and run through the gears. The MGW Race Spec shifter actually bolts to the transmission so it feels just like a top loader. It's obvious when you get your hands on the MGW that is is rock solid and built better than a tank. The machine work and precision feel of this shifter is absolutely mind blowing. I was so stressed about getting one of these cars with the MT82, but went out on a limb and did it because of the reviews I read about people who installed these shifters and the difference that it made....That shifter along with the BG Syncro Shift ll fluid make this car feel incredible. ......the next and final steps in perfecting the MT-82 will be to replace the clutch to master cylinder line with a Wilwood 1/4'' (inside diameter) brake hose that is long enough to fully seat and not ever have the opportunity to suck air into the system like the factory plastic hose that is too short from the factory and looks like it is about to fall off...literally barely connected on brand new cars to the master cylinder. Then last on my list will be a Mcleod stainless steel braided hydraulic clutch line. This will replace the factory plastic line and will not allow for any expansion in the line. These cars are incredible, and one of the joys to owning one is doing the research and going down all the right rabbit holes in order to arrive at perfection. Do not let anyone on the internet sway you from getting one of best cars to be had and possibly the last of their kind.

I've had mine for about a month now. I have a 2011 GT with the MT82. It seems like 2-3 is the biggest issue for most owners from what I've read. Strangely I never have any trouble with 2-3. My problem area is 1-2. 2nd gear fights me almost every time. I also echo the problem you mentioned with launching smoothly from a stop. I'm really having a hard time getting it down. I also experience lurching and sometimes even shuddering. I don't know what to do, I've tried double clutching, giving it more throttle, less throttle, etc. I know the car is 12 years old at the time of this comment, but I don't think that's it. I just recently bought a 2016 manual ecoboost. The car itself is great! always loved the mustang look and feel however the more I drove it, I realized that maybe something was wrong with the transmission. The shifter always fights me especially on 1st to 2nd. I learned how to drive manual on a 2011 BMW 335i that is an absolute dream to drive and as well as a 2008 Cayman. Love both of those cars. Since then I've driven a fare share of manual cars, all with different transmission. I got to say, that I like a heavier feel to the clutch and shifter. That why I liked the mustang so much. Didn't realize that after a month of driving that I would realize how much of a struggle it is to drive smoothly. I've learned how to tame it a bit and work around the lurching, but prolly at the expense of my clutch plate. Always thought that the previous owner was really hard on the car and maybe just needed some replacement parts. Didn't know that the whole trany was a pile of shit when it was stock too. I still love that car and use it as my daily driver, I just don't want to get locked out of a gear when I want to have a little fun. It hasn't happened that much.. maybe three times. Its just something I'm not used to in a car. Makes me feel a little better that others have the same problem, but at the same time, I little disappointed that the factory transmissions are doomed to have problems and require more money spent for a fix that shouldn't occur until later in the engines life. Id rather not spend $2000+ on replacement parts but driving experience is everything for me. That's why I have a manual. Just want to be able to enjoy the driving experience without worrying about lockouts and premature transmission wear.

The transmission jerks my car every single time I put it in 1st. It randomly clunks and thumps when shifting to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The feel in each gear is inconsistent, except for the overdrives.
My plan was to keep this car indefinitely. Now? I'm definitely getting rid of it before the warranty expires. I'm not paying for a new transmission if it decides to blow up after the 60K miles. It's sad.

FYI: Getrag makes the MT82 in your car. It’s a German company and makes manuals for Porsche(GT4) and BMW. People have said this transmission is made by a Chinese company and they make lousy transmissions. That’s wrong. The best cars from Europe use their transmissions, I just thought I’d mention this. My 2019 Bullitt has the same transmission as your car and it works fine. As noted in the comments, the Tremec3160 in the GT350 isn’t perfect either, and has a tendency to rattle and it’s notchy. I was surprised to learn the same company that makes the manuals for Porsche and BMW makes the transmissions for Ford Mustangs. Ford will continue to use this transmission and improve it as it also uses the Tremec in selected cars. The Mach1 and GT 500 uses transmissions from Tremec, while the other Mustangs use Getrag.

@@the__black__box Before added the trans mount bushing it was extremely difficult to shift into second gear during a high power pull like a 0 to 60 due to the tail end of the trans being out of alignment with the shifter.
Adding the mount insert made my high power 1-2 shifts much better and reduced 3rd gear nibble in normal driving, the notchyness is still there though but that is caused by the trans fluid and the synchros.
The shifter bushing mostly helps with making the shifter feel more firm instead of a wet noodle, with the stock bushing put the shifter into gear and note how much you can move the shifter side to side even though it is in gear, it doesn't feel right and it cant be good for shift accuracy.

I know the shift forks in the 18-19s aren't as good as the 15-17, however I don't think the Mt82 deserves a lot of the hate that it gets and isn't a "poopy" transmission, especially in a close to stock application. It may not be the best, but I don't think it's bad. I think most of the issues people have with it comes from the shifter. Change that and go to a braided ss clutch line and I think you'll like the trans much better.

At close to 30K I’m going to do change the fluid for the MT82 I have noticed some weird shift when shifting really quick, like it’ll feel like it slipped straight into the right space, but usually I’ll get more lockout when I first start the car and it’s not fully warm, when it’s all in the green it’s usually pretty smooth, I hold out my 1st till 2,300 rpm and my second to 2K rpm and 3rd I hold it at 1,500 rpm and I don’t shift into 4th I drop it in neutral to let it warm up come to a complete stop or slow down enough to put it in second and usually my MT82 is warm, when I first got the car and was driving it delicately I did notice that the shift felt almost like a Porsche, now it’s like an old school mustang but I’m sure it needs new fluid, I smelled my clutch the other day on a hot day and if you need trans fluid it’ll work your clutch harder, if you drive the car hard and a lot it’s best to change the diff fluid early it’s not like those old mustangs

I have zero problems with the feel of the stick itself and the clutch pedal feels good to me, but I hate how I feel like a bad driver at lower speeds/gears because of it wanting to lurch. Im in the same boat. The 2018+ are having so many problems that idk anymore if i want a mustang. The 10 speed has problems the 6mt has problems, and the cayote has a slightly rod knock at cold start? Idk lol.

I have a 18+ and its not that bad, I have never had a lockout, have rev'd it up to redline. I would get a aftermarket shifter, but I'm probably gonna sell mine because I'm trying to buy a house atm... but the car is awesome.

I’m on the fence between buying a brand new Mustang GT or getting a used GT 350. Both seem to have their ups and downs with the mustang GT specifically it’s the transmission but with the GT 350 it’s the engine seizing from oil leak issues. As someone that is new to mustangs it really makes this decision a lot harder than it Hass to be. I welcome any feedback

I’m in the same situation- although I’ve read that by replacing the stock clutch & shifter, it will solve the GT Manual issue(s). The pricing for a new clutch will run for $1k-1500. And shifter for $90-500. Would it be worth it? Idk 🤷‍♂️. But when I do, I’ll place my order (or not) & come back & update this tread.

For that price you’re better off getting a mach1 which has the tremec transmission. I’ve heard nothing but horror stories about the voodoo engine in the gt350 especially if you’re buying a used one.

i stopped the video when you said cloudy weather is cozy. I 100% AGREE. overcast weather is my favorite. The norm is to like sunny weather cuz you can be outside. its a social norm ive never acclimated to. Also you find rain snow and clouds dont stop ppl from doing activities you would think they wouldnt such as going to the beach when its raining a bit or still being out soicalizing regardless the weather conditions.

I have an 18 GT, and I have had absolutely no issues with my transmission. No lockouts, nothing whatsoever. It’s shifts smooth as silk. In fact, this MT is so much smoother than my 2012; that I see no need to change the shifter like I did in that car.

I test drove a manual eco today and after owning 6 different standard trans cars I have realized I will just be getting the auto I hate the feel of the clutch it’s very springy and the bite point is way to high if the clutch was smoother and more progressive it would have been fantastic the trans was very smooth under hard throttle but the clutch was a deal breaker for me

Got an 18 pp1 in velocity blue, love the car but man the transmission is a big issue. Put an mgw on it and still have lockout. Had to have it rebuilt at 15k miles and theres still quirks with it. People say the clutch, shifter, and clutch line are a fix but i think the real fix is better designed synchros

My Mt82-17 has survived several trackdays, late night hooning and even the Nurburgring, the shifting has only gotten smoother since new.. Thinking of getting the Mach 1 though but need to get updated on the gear ratios before deciding.

Yep, I'm over in Europe so I'm depending on YT videos for information regarding the Mach 1 Tremecs gearing 😁 The 15-17 MT82 gearing is on point 👍
