CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Noah (Martin Henderson) watches as Samara (Daveigh Chase) crawls out of the television and heads straight for him.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A disturbing videotape appears to hold the power of life and death over those who view it in this offbeat thriller. A strange videotape begins making the rounds in a town in the Pacific Northwest; it is full of bizarre and haunting images, and after watching it, many viewers receive a telephone call in which they are warned they will die in seven days. A handful of teenagers who watched the tape while spending a weekend at a cabin in the mountains scoff at the threat, but as predicted, they all die suddenly on the same night. Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts), the aunt of one of the ill-fated teens, is a journalist who has decided to investigate the matter and travels West with her young son, Aidan (David Dorfman), a troubled child who has been drawing pictures of strange and ominous visions. Rachel managed to find the cabin in the woods and watches the video herself; afterward, she receives the same phone call, and realizes she must solve the puzzle of the video and the person or persons behind it within a week. Rachel turns to her ex, Noah (Martin Henderson), an expert in video technology, who at first is convinced the story is a hoax until he digs deeper into the mystery. The Ring was adapted from a 1996 Japanese film by Hideo Nakata, which became a massive box-office success in Asia and spawned two sequels.

If the TV came back on I'd turn it off again and answer the phone....

How about just smashing the fucking TV screen?
Smash the TV with the sledgehammer
She'll still come out through any reflective surface in the Japanese version.
Someone should put the tv on the edge of a cliff, so when she crawls out she falls off and dies

alex coronado Well not in the original Japanese version
Emma Fan oh ok
I’ll never forget seeing this at the movie theater when this first came out. The entire audience was so shocked when she actually started to come out of the tv. No one was expecting that
When it happened in the Japanese film that inspired this, in that culture they take the paranormal and spiritual stuff very seriously and so people there were literally too afraid to go near their TVs for days after they watched it.
Because it's the JAPANESE's ORIGINAL IDEA! hollyweed just copied Ringu! That's why it's first time for you americans to watch and feel scared without the jumpscares because this type of scene is originated from Japan. You americans can never think of this unique idea! You always copy and copy!

Fun fact: In order to make Samara's walk more creepier, the ring film makers shot the actor walking backwards, and then reversed the shot
I'm pretty sure that was the original that did that
I love that effect. You can see her hair coming out of the well first like water spilling over the side

People always ask “Why didn’t he just run or close his eyes?” She can project images into your mind closing your eyes would do absolutely nothing to protect you and she can appear through screens and teleport so attempting to run would do very little to prolong your life.

@Léo Humbert Collonge Yes!
@Léo Humbert Collonge I love the first and second movie, the third movie to me was really mediocre (but not completely godawful)
Yes! It’s a classics! I’m grateful Hollywood Adapted Ringu from Japan. Enjoyed their take on it
@Léo Humbert Collonge 7 days.... clever joke or coincidence?
Kudos to the Japanese moviemakers who came up with this scene first. In the book you just die badly, there is nonTV at all.
I remember this scene in the theatre, the people went nuts, i never saw that reaction before.
Can you go into detail about it?
Just screaming or screaming at the top of their lungs? Did people get up? Jump? Was it mobile? Did people run out?
I would imagine so. This was adapted from a Japanese horror film. They're horror films are supposed to be more "eerie" or "supernatural" whereas American horror has monsters like werewolves, vampires, zombies, etc. The grudge was also a an adaption of a Japanese horror film. I had so many nightmares about her when I was a kid. I couldn't sleep
When I saw this in the theater something happened that's always stayed with me. When the camera pushes in on Samara, the place had gone quiet, and as her hair parts itself revealing her face a single woman in the theater let out the most piercing *scream*. Somehow it was just perfect. Still feels like one of the most memorable audience moments I'd witnessed seeing a movie.
This is the most overrated and over hyped horror scene of all time.
@Take My Breath Away!!! because it's not scary. The first time I saw it after hearing all the hype about it was 2003ish around the age of 15. I'm not sure if it was unique but I'd never seen a horror film show someone crawling out of a TV before, so I thought it was cool and considered it original and creative. But even as a teenager I didn't find it scary in the slightest. For a jump scare you'd find the nurse scene in Exorcist 3 hard to beat. For body horror it'd be Guinea Pig 2 (a film so disturbing that Charlie Sheen contacted the FBI after watching it thinking it was a snuff film involving a real murder). For supernatural horror it'd probably be The Conjuring 1 or 2. The Ring and The Grudge is all hype.
That's what he gets for wearing flip flops with jeans.

One of the most greatest, iconic, and memorable scenes in the whole entire movie as of today it still gives me chills and goosebumps. 😍😎💯👍😰😱
AMEN!
This concept is the most creative idea of dark magic I've seen in a film.
Marius Funnily enough, the original novel that the japanese film was based on had a science fiction explanation instead of a supernatural one that didn’t involve ghosts.
@@troin3925 what was it?
Conner Conrad I haven’t read it yet (I don’t even own it yet), but the tape’s curse was actually a “virus,” of sorts. Sadako doesn’t come out of the TV in the book (nor does her ghost appear at all). The virus was created from a combination of Sadako’s dying will, her psychic powers and her smallpox which mutated her powers.
There is something to be done to have her!!!

watching this scene in theaters when i was a kid is one of the scariest things i've ever seen. looking back i think they ruined it by showing her face. japanese version is better in that regard
Couldn't agree more, the American version did so well in every aspect, up until they show her face, the make up basically just made her older and more wrinkles, the Japanese one just straight up alien and insidious.
@@iszac87 true. Now in the Japanese version they DID show her left eye. But that was it
Is it just me that finds the clip of Samara climbing out of the well scarier than the actual part where she climbs out the television?
martha xo That's because the actress was actually walking backwards when that part was filmed. As you can see on 0:44, her hair is coming out on the edge of the well.
It's Daveigh Chase under the makeup. If you base all this around this around the close up of her face then you are simply mistaken because there is nothing masculine about her. The fact that you can tell that it is a little girl acting so inhumanely in this scene is what makes it so powerful to begin with. If you have proof of this supposed quote from the screenwriter then provide a reliable source.

I would have loved if there was a scene in which he tries to fight her but then Samara moves her hair telepathically and wraps them around his arms, then she reveals her horrifying face.

Came here after Dr. Strange 2
IMO The idea of Samara having water dripping out from her is genius, it gives her a more realistic-like design
This scene is so so so good even outside of the scary elements. At this point in the story, the main characters have "helped" Samara and "saved the day", only for the complete opposite to come true.
that's why this movie was made...to see if people will still help real life samara's in "reality" ( girls or boy, men or women Samaras)...maybe the ending was the opposite and deliberately ended in horror..the reverse of what would probably happen..maybe the horrors are all parallel universe scenarios!!

Also Chihiro in Spirited Away.

Actually Erik, In the first Ring movie, Daveigh Chase (Lilo) Also played Samara when she was climbing out of the TV, she wasn't just the Good 'normal' Samara. In The Ring Two, it was Kelly Stables, with contortionist Bonnie Morgan doing the spider crawl. And in Rings, it's all Bonnie Morgan. Archieve footage, like the flashbacks in Two, and Samara walking towards the TV, is just the Daveigh Chase footage from this movie.

I remember how pissed off I was when this movie came out, and people were seeing it, and all like, "Meh, it wasn't really scary." and EVERY time someone had told them that she comes out of the TV at the end and more. When I saw it? I literally had never heard of the movie before. Me and some friends just walked into the theater. "The Ring? What's that?" We hadn't seen a trailer, NOTHING. And it scared the SHIT out of me. That's how you see it.
That's how you should see ALL movies. Trailers and spoilers have really hurt the movie-going experience.
they were really dumb enough to spoil that masterpiece horror scene in the trailer ?! I can't believe it
Same here. I watched this film for the first time when i was eleven, and i didn't knew anything about it, so when Rachel survives after the sunset and Samara's body is taken out from the well, i actually thought everything was over, that Samara would rest in peace and Noah and Rachel would have their stupidly beautiful Hollywood ending. So can you imagine what i felt when she came out of the TV? No, you can't. I actually think the best part of this scene is Noah's reaction...You can tell his mind can't quite assimilate what's going on, and because of that, he can't even think about what to do. Great depiction of how watching something like this could destroy someone's sanity.
Really? Almost everyone I knew was terrified after seeing this movie. Heck, it took me several times to actually see the entire movie. For a good while, I was completely petrified of TVs that were turned off 😨

The creepiness is definitely killed as soon as you see her actual face
The way this movie works is genius. They place a big jumpscare at the beginning that comes out of nowhere, that way you are tense for the rest of the film. From there, do they keep trying to startle you? No, they slowly creep up on you to get under your skin, relying on a slow-burn atmospheric scare tactic. Then comes this scene and they drop the bomb on all the tension they’ve been building up in you.
Which jumpscare? Also they copied this from the Japanese version that did that better Imo :)
