    Woah, I was about to talk shit about your hair not being within regs and putting videos online while in uniform, but then I researched who you were. You are actually Maj Patrick Sorenson, and petitioned to wear your hair in respects to your Native heritage. Mad respect, Sir. I'm glad I didn't post my previous comment lol

      Thanks for stopping by Beeazy, I welcome conversation on my hair, and guilty as charged. 😂
      I learned about the possibility of getting a hair accommodation at AISES a few years ago, the Air Force was really leading the way with 6-7 guys working on packets. I immediately started working on mine. A few months after I submitted, I learned that I wasn’t the first for the Army. I’ll leave the name off, since I don’t know if he wants it floating out there- but anyway he already had a 6-8” ponytail last summer and I believe he was the first in the DoD. I was grateful when my accommodation was approved last May, and that I was successful in pushing the needle a little further, getting approval to wear eagle feathers during ceremonies. I have others, but choose to wear only 5 feathers in my military uniform, to honor my fallen Soldiers. SPC Brittany Gordon (commo rep for our intel company, and Intel SPC) to a suicide vest IED; SFC Nelson Trent (commo NCO for one of our SFATs) exactly 2 months after Brittany to a ground planted IED to his MRAP. SPC Adam Ihde and Brad Angelo (commo/DARPA contractor, former airman), both to suicide after redeploying). Most recently, CW4 Don Drigo, my partner in crime during my tour in Japan (my network warrant, while I was the NETOPS chief). I share these not for shock, but because honoring and remembering my fallen by wearing feathers for them is more important to me than any of the chest candy I have. Also, as a mid ranked guy, I’m in a good position to help out the younger cousins who may not know exactly how to ask or what regulations to research. If you know any indigenous guys in any branch, tell them to look me up on global and I can help.
      Also, without a political opinion in any direction for other things going on, I want to share that growing our traditional Native hair is respectful, conservative, and professional; I’m hoping to spread that message. Finally, I’m a desk jockey now, but if real war comes our way, I’ll be shaving my head, and ready to lock and load.

    AP! Great video brotha! I support our US Veterans! I got into Bonsai for similar reasons. In a stressful work environment, Bonsai brought peace back to my soul. We talked over on insta regarding hydroponics for maple cuttings. Anyway, cool channel this far and as I start my Bonsai channel I’ll send you an invite! ✌🏼

    Im going to leave mine a broom style. I didn't cut back mine hard at all. Because these are like Kotohime, they seem to need more branching to keep them alive easier. I got mine last fall, repotted last week and in May, I'll make selected cuts after i see how it all flushes out.

    The best thing is, is that you even have a slight resemblance to Thomas Ian Griffith in Karate Kid 3 😂 Karate Kid is what got me into bonsai as a kid.
    I just got a 1 year old (grafted) Arakawa a couple of weeks ago that I plan to eventually air layer, but hopefully take cuttings from at the end of the first flush this growing season - is a plant that young too young to take cuttings from? I'm not expecting many.
    Good luck with the channel!

    • @acer_p_bonsai
      @acer_p_bonsai  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Thomas Ian Griffith 😛 I’ll take it 💪🏽
      As for the cuttings, it’s never too young to take cuttings. If you look at the Short I put up the other day with the Nishikigawa rooted cutting, that little plant is from a 1 gallon that I got from Mr. Maple late autumn/early winter. Not the best season to root cuttings, but out of 6, I got 4 to root. 2 are growing nicely, one is stagnant but live buds, and 1 withered…so hopefully #3 catches up.
      The main secret is juicing the mother tree in spring with fertilizer so the cuttings are maxed out with available nutrients when they are asked to grow roots on their own.
      Switching topics to air layers, I’ve found the same to be true. You can do “mini air layers” on first or second year strong growth, but you need to be surgically delicate when setting up the cambium break, then wrapping with an appropriately smaller sphagnum moss ball. Only downside is side is fragility. Last season I lost one of these minis, because the wind snapped it before it could grow roots…I transitioned it to a cutting, and was able to save it. I’ll have more episodes in the future diving deep into all my tips, tricks, and lessons learned for propagation.

      @@acer_p_bonsaiThat future video would be awesome! And it's probably a silly question, and besides the point because my Arakawa is nowhere near developing rough bark, just for future reference - is the process of stripping a ring of bark the same for rough bark cultivars as it is for smooth bark?

    • @acer_p_bonsai
      @acer_p_bonsai  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@antiduckable yes, it’s the same process, but you want to be careful not to remove too much bark above your cut, that will be important aesthetically for your future new tree. 🪴 🍁
