It's cool the epi's are getting the traditional headstock, which to me is more attractive. I am not a fan of this matte type finish though, just looks kind of cheap. I understand that high glass / nitro can be a bit too shiny, but old 59s do not end up looking like this strange matte finish. It's just a weird look.
I agree but it's extremely easy to buff them to gloss. I did mine by hand in about 15 minutes.
@@williamdesmarais4931 oh yea, I forgot you could do that. That’s awesome.
@@williamdesmarais4931can you share how you were able to buff it to gloss? Does it permanently remove the satin finish?
@Eric-bq1jo I used ultra light car polish and Terry cloth by hand. You could also use a dab of polish on a small drill polishing pad. It doesn't take much to get a nice shine on it. Polyurethane Clear coat is hard so you you won't burn thru if you slow and light with the drill. Pick a discrete spot like the neck heal, try a bit there. That will give you a bit of practice and a good idea of results. And yes it permanently turns the satin to gloss.
@@williamdesmarais4931 that’s awesome and good to know. I have too many LPs as it is, but if epiphone does a run of the slash Jessica with the Gibson style headstock, I would be interested. If it was matte I’d definitely try your technique 👍🏼
My biggest gripe is the flame maple top veneer. If they’re going to do that fine… but choose flame tops that have crisp, defined flame lines. This looks like a blurry mess. I’d rather they go the 1958 route without the flame (aka plain top). If you’re going to do it… do it right. Other than that, it’s alright. I’m glad they offer it in factory burst. That’s my favorite burst.
This is the best review of this guitar so far, going into more detail than others, thank you.

I’m so looking forward to this guitar. Gibson Custom Shop offers their core finish options, one of them being VOS (Vintage Original Sheen). Standard on Custom Shop Historic Reissue models. These models, with VOS (Vintage Original Sheen) finishes, have a gently aged appearance, with lightly dulled gloss nitrocellulose finishes and some patina on the hardware. Parts are lightly aged for authentic vintage patina. Finish is buffed to a light matte appearance.
Nice one!
Great guitar. Played it back to back with my PRS DGT SE goldtop. Equal level of quality but like the rosewood fingerboard on the PRS and like the playability more of the DGT. But this is a great guitar nonetheless.
If only they would have built it with the correct distance between bridge and bridge P.U. (which makes a huge difference in the voicing of the guitar). These (the EPi's) will sound slightly warmer then the real deal.
I have 3 high end 2021 Epiphones and wouldn't have it any other way and mine have the proper Kalamazoo epiphone headstocks
Hey, by any chance, are you gonna do the same review for the new customs from the same line? Thanks in advance!
We actually got one in last week but it sold before I could film anything. So hopefully we a get another one in soon!
Hard Luck Woman. Nice
Is this matte finish like the finishes on the IBG Epiphone acoustics? If so I like it
It's basically the same type of finish but with a different name.
Just buy the first iteration of this guitar 2nd hand and they will also now be coming down in price new as retailers begin to sell them off as old stock now they are discontinued. An upgraded bridge and tailpiece will only cost about $100 and you have a very close sounding guitar, effectively you are now paying $500 more for an open book headstock, that's the reality. $1400 is breaking the bank for a lot of people at the moment especially for a guitar that hasn't even got a rosewood fingerboard!
It is a complete disgrace
I’m not a fan of the increased price, but the new versions have e Custombucker pickups, which are different than the Burstbuckers found in the prior iteration. Are they worth $300? I don’t know. Maybe?
@@jasonswitzer1748 i just pre ordered one of these new les pauls to see how they are but apparently if you go online for a set of custombuckers its like $500, plus you are getting all the good cts pots and stuff so idk, it should be as good as a gibson so im exited!!
@@ripperthecrooks6428You have this guitar mistaken for the Tribute.
@@automatoncollectives7237 I think the point being made is that this guitar is about the same as the Tribute price wise but the Tribute hasnt even got a Mahogany neck so is worse value in terms of construction woods used.
they missed the frets, as far as bound fret tips
Sounds better than a Gibson!
Not impressed. If they care going to do figured tops the please make them with definition. The Custom Buckers are just alnico 4 and totally subjective, just sales hype, same with Gibson. I think that the finish is cheap looking and turn off although I have the previous 59 in Southern Fade. I was able to polish it up so it looks much better.
For the price, it’s a steal. Much better than the bottom feeder Gibson lines.
Looks nice, sound like an epi... It just needs decent pickups.
it has the best pickups in Gibson's entire lineup tf you on about?
@@samyazza23 maybe because there are many other pickups out there better than Gibson burstbuckers imho...
@@julienbachelet9867there aren’t….
@@julienbachelet9867 There not Gibson Burstbuckers but Custombuckers which cost around 500 dollars a set
@@julienbachelet9867 It supposedly has custom buckers.
That thing needs a set up badly . Buzzy frets aboound .
A couple years ago I bought the original 59 and I wasn't impressed. I had to replace the nut and spent over 2 hours setting it up to make it playable. I wasn't impressed with the burstbuckers in it either.
As with the MIM fenders I have owned I made up my mind and sold all of them at a 60% loss because their resale value is horrible and vowed never to buy again. I bought a real Gibson and a made in America strat.
I went back to my roots, no more cheaply made knock offs of the originals.
@@johnsmith-ug5tp an original 59 with burstbuckers?

ALBATROSS
What flavour is it?
Sorry, but the bogus color options are just the same crap as before. They just changed the names to sound fancier. Paid $799 for my ASFB '59 and it puts these to shame. I've not seen another Epiphone '59 that comes even close to the example I have. Had a real sweet Cherry one that I let go because it was a bit heavy. Kinda regretting it now because Epiphone can't seem to get any of the colors consistently right. Many of them are pretty bad honestly. It's my belief the ADCB is the most difficult color to nail. The other options all have much too dark coloring to be even close to a real burst.
It’s an aged finish used by Gibson.
It definitely beats out the bottom feeder Gibson options. That’s for sure.
Still pushing the hideous cheap looking matt finish. Its a £599 guitar. A good copy of the real thing.
They absolutely are not using higher Grade wood . They don't even use real Mahagony or Maple . The Maple top is actually Birch and the Mahagony back is Olive wood . They use many species of Mystery woods for Epi Guitars
Mystery wood I agree
How do you know this ? Genuinely curious 👍🏻
Well you should prove your claims because otherwise you're just accusing a manufacturer of lying to their customers.
Ignorant comment...
USD 1299 No match to Japan Lespaul under USD 1000 so LOL
🤦
It's a $1200 dollar Chinese cnc made guitar of questionable materials...
I take it you missed the disclaimer Epiphone added after the lawsuit of 2023 that Gibson has gone to great lengths to hide in America?
Disclaimer: In order to continually improve the design, quality and performance of our products and instruments and to make use of the best materials at all times, Epiphone reserves the right to change specifications without notice.
Soooo, the could change the specs to okoume body and neck (extremely cheap mahogany substitute) birch tops (extremely cheap maple substitute) and there's nothing anyone could do to Gibson as they have a disclaimer, but dealers selling a $1200 dollar guitar with falsely advertised specs can easily be sued for not disclosing the disclaimer in videos, adds and in person..
Epiphone was caught in 2023 selling 1959 reissue guitars with olive wood backs and necks and birch tops, the guitar in question was sent to a highly reputable lab, Gibson was hauled into court and NEVER discredited the labs findings but rather issued this statement (we used different woods in the summer months due to temperature and moisture ) soooo they added a nifty disclaimer to protect themselves but not their dealers..
But retailers continue to sell their "valued" customers these guitars that could literally be made of anything..
Imagine paying $1200 for a guitar to find out it's made of sub par materials and the dealer never mentioned the disclaimer, how mad would you be?
I definitely wouldn't feel valued and I'd definitely never purchase anything from them ever again not even so much as a pick...
Just things to consider...
This definitely doesnt sound good , its like a small can of soup .
Without the aromas😊
It's genuine Gibson custom shop pickups.. is it the pickups you don't like?
I’m loving the clarity and openness of the sound
this guitar tone sounds like a piece of crap!
sad, cheap laurel as well as a painted logo...
to bad it's made in China
