  • The best way to connect a subwoofer is through its high level input, but what if that's not possible. Is a splitter alright or a big non no? Have a question you want to ask Paul? www.psaudio.com...

    Talk of splitters (and cable lengths) remind me of the early days of rs232 connections. The standard recommended max cable length was about 50 feet but our guideline was usually 30 feet and each connector was counted as 3 feet, and cable quality mattered. (On that note; IMO anyone who questions the difference cable and connectors can make in HIFI should consider the differences between cat5, cat5e, cat6, and cat7 Ethernet cables.)

    Very short cables pick up less interference, so as long as the cable isn't too thin, it shouldn't affect the sound much.

    You should use Amphions own subwoofer. It will blend in better then any other sub. In fact Amphion are the only system that I heard where the sub is invisible. All other system I heard I can hear the sub , I even told Martin Logan to turn off the sub on a convention because it disturb more then added something to the sound. So, in general I don't like subs, but Ampihion I liked..because it disappeared and just added depth and umph to the sound.

    I wonder if the guy meant a stand alone active splitter by which it gives a variable frequency high pass / low pass line level output ..... these can be very useful . I have one that I designed and had made .. it's a 12dB/Octave Linkwitz-Riley type and ranges from 80Hz to 250Hz.

    • @briansimmons5363
      @briansimmons5363 Před 5 lety

      I would say that is not a splitter but an active crossover. Splitter means one signal in and that same signal out but now two of them. A crossover seperate the frequencies so this signal out on each leg is no way the same as the input.

    The only negative with splitters is the impedance changes, but it almost never is an issue, even if you split 4 ways.

    • @CeeStyleDj
      @CeeStyleDj Před rokem

      Since I stumbled upon your comment three years later, what if you have 1 sub output in your integrated amplifier, and then you use a splitter adapter at the amplifier - but that's splitter adapter is connected to two Y cables (essentially, the signal is split AGAIN) - since the powered subs have left and right input and I want to utilize the left and right input because those are the cables I bought lol. Not only am I worried about the impedance, but I'm worried that the DB boost the fact maybe too much since I'm effectively splitting the signal twice before it goes into the Sub(s). Thank you for potentially answering my question and if you need any more additional details, I will write back.

    • @homeboi808
      @homeboi808 Před rokem

      @@CeeStyleDj I’m not sure how subs handle 2 inputs that are duplicates. I assume it is just doubled (as it is expecting the bass from just the left/right channel in the left/right input). If so, just turning down the subwoofer volume should negate this.

    I'm trying to understand this cable talk. I think the issue with cables is impededance and capacitance. Your splitter added little of either, but inexpensive mic cables might. Most likely, however, is that your super high end cables are "coloring" your music because they are acting like a low pass filters. Someone who has a clue please correct everything I got wrong.

    My question is if on splitting a low level signal and associated acjhoustical output. One leg to the speaker amp and the other to the sub amp. If you match the levels with the preamp at say 9 o'clock then turn it up to 3 o'clock, will the sound level no longer match? Do different amplifiers have different acoustical outputs based on line level voltage inputs? Do all amplifiers have the same linearity with regard to voltage in and acoustical output?
