  • Conrad Trow, CJF continues with the trim of Shy, a pleasure horse that is lightly ridden in conditions not requiring shoes. Be sure to go through the whole video- the second half of the video gives you a "farrier view" of the trimming process. We will post the final clips of the left hind trim in a few days.

    Thank you so much for explaining what you're doing while you trim. You don't know how many videos I've watched with zero farrier commentary so you have no idea what the farrier was thinking. It makes it really hard to learn anything. I appreciate your video and learned a lot!

    I like the way you trim. Liked the commentary. 👍 Sharp rasp. 👍

    This video helped a lot to show me how to position my nippers to trim the back hooves! Thank you for such a clear and great video😇😁

    The go pro was great. Except missing that last balance check. We don't often get the farrier view.

    I’m trying to learn more about barefoot trimming. What are you trying to get the coronet band to line up with?

    • @FarrierProducts
      @FarrierProducts  Před rokem +1

      Generally they try to align the hoof wall at ground surface to the coronary band- and the white line.

    What do you do about soles and bars that are like glass, sharp knife has a hard time bitting into?

    • @tacknup
      @tacknup Před 3 lety +2

      Either soak the hooves before trimming or I like to use nippers to trim the bars instead of the hoof knife

      Sandra, thanks but the bars just crumble because they’re so hard... sometimes the hoof wall does the same thing. We try to leave a mud puddle by the water trough but it’s so dry here it doesn’t really help.
      I guess I could try to soak the first hoof about 15 - 20 minutes before I start to see if that does anything. I’ll try that this weekend!

      @@mariroberson-soranch1476 Some farriers use a small torch and apply heat to soften the sole and bars. Carefully!

      @@mariroberson-soranch1476 I'm no expert, but I have a hard time with hard, dry hooves and I sometimes put a hoof boot on the horse and fill it with water to try to get some moisture into the hoof before trimming/rasping. I use hoof boots (Easy Care Gloves) on my barefoot horses, so I have them available. I find it to be the easiest way to get a a bit of moisture into the hoof. It makes the trim easier for me.

      The Bloom Forge is a German made knife and has a good edge right from the factory.
