Devos' comments on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act were appalling and showed a complete lack of knowledge about the history of educating these students in schools. If states were able to be responsible to these students we would not have had multiple class action suits against states for their exclusion of these students, nor federal legislation. One does not need to look further than TX right now to know that states will do what is in their best interest, not is what in the best interests of students with disabilities. I have observed education secretaries during the Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Obama administration and none of them have such an appalling lack of knowledge as Devos. If you care at all about students with disabilities, call your senators now and ask them to vote no on her confirmation.

You can't put charter schools in the same category as public schools because they only receive partial funding from the government. Also some charter schools have a specific mandate so to say they have to adhere strictly to one federal rule or another universally would be folly. If for instance you have a charter school that is a trade school then trying to comply with the americans with disabilities clauses would be both costly and fruitless and the kind of wasteful spending that people and this administration is tired of. No one in a wheel chair is going to be an automobile mechanic period. They may want to. they may work on cars with assistance from others. but the fact is they cannot expect to be gainfully employed in that field as their is very little they can do without assistance and some things they can't do at all. They also aren't going to get into rotc and any schools.

its more about getting her to be accountable and on record saying she'd disagree with discrimination, bullying, and the non-separation of church and state for any school that receives federal funding. You'd think this is common sense to be held accountable to these standards, but this meeting and the unwillingness to answer these questions means it is actually needed.
