I've built a dozen Minecraft servers for my family to play on, and the first one I stood up wasn't secured properly. We noticed that structures in some areas of the map were griefed. Some buildings were burned, and TNT had been used in other areas. I looked on the server and found UUIDs in the logs that didn't match family member accounts. Two people had been on the server, and one of them had connected multiple times across a two week period. We never actually encountered anyone while we were playing, though.
Fortunately, this was a vanilla server that I had built using a world download from another server and we didn't have many hours in on it. So I just hardened the server and restored the world to a pre-griefed state. There was no harm done to us.
My advice to everyone is be careful. These clowns can and will find your unsecured server and when they do they'll try their best to ruin your day.

@@SlyNine I run a forge server, so I use forgeessentials to make automatic backups without any hassle; I also periodically run Region Fixer to make backups that ir can understand in case anything goes wrong in that front; Windows backup is also always on, making 1 or 2 backups a day (I'm a little limited since those backups must be done on an HDD). And the whole folder with the server data I backup manually every now and then on every known good storage media I own (about 10 copies). I could automate that last step, it's just I'm not in the need rn. All of this precautions for a server only 3 people play regularly? Yes. Specially since it's not only my work and progress, but that of my friends, and I wouldn't want to lose any fond memories of that server (and trust me, we have tons, we used to be more players years ago)
On that note always run your server "online", that is clients must be legit and checked against Mojang. And white and blacklisting is a must, although I understand it can be a big hassle if you plan on building a big community.
I also implemented a hosts file on the PC to block any attemps to connect to known malicious websites, just in case.
You are never too safe, there is no "too many precautions" point. And when we all use Minecraft as a way to create safe spaces, it better be actually safe.

Imagine if, as an example, someone's child passed away due to something like a form of cancer or an accident. A minecraft server they opened for their family to spend time with their child doing something the child enjoyed then becomes something precious: A little digital scrapbook of memories and a digital footprint of something they and their child did together. Something intangible but real-feeling they can look at and say "My child and I did this together." A one-of-a-kind thing.

This happened to a pretty small server between me and some friends which we all (but I especially) had sunk many many hours into over the course of about 6 months or so. It wasn't a 10 year old server or anything, but we had worked super hard on all of our builds, had a really nice community area, and I was building a massive quartz town hall building to support a judicial system for resolving player conflicts. In a matter of 10 minutes, I watched as two griefers used fly hacks and grief hacks (any block they stood near instantly blew up) to systematically destroy all of my work and all of the stuff my friends had made. The server host said he made frequent backups but it turns out he was lazy and his last backup was from months before so we had to start all over again. Unfortunately after that many players quit, and we were never able to recreate the community we had on that world. Griefing random servers is a seriously fucked up thing to do.

Here's a good way to get revenge: Create a new server with completely no security. Set up a bot of some sort to notify you when users other than yourself log on. When you see suspicious activity, log on and spawn-trap them. Make sure to turn on ImmediateRespawn so that they have no choice but to respawn and get killed again. Then, when you get bored of it, kick them and delete the server/add more security.

This video came out just in time. About 4 weeks ago my neighbour and I had been attacked by greifers that somehow got past our whitelist system and managed to give them selves operator, They managed to ban us all and place illegal blocks such as player heads etc. Our city was completely blew up by large amount of TNT and all our inventorys had been cleared. Thankfully the greifers forgot to delete our backups so nothing really was lost. But this has encouraged us to step up our security game and always be careful with who we invite to the server.

We thought he was someone I'd invited a while ago, but when he started lighting things on fire and then got around my ban by using seemingly endless accounts, we quickly realized otherwise. My friend ended up killing the guy in-game (and got his hacked-in silk touch stone pickaxe, I mean why even bother....) before I IP banned him and then restarted the server in whitelist mode. It actually started lore for our server, and we set up a gravestone for "jaco the firebringer" (the first account he used contained jaco in the name) and the story of how my friend defeated jaco the firebringer is passed down to new players.
